Andy Ryan: Bellator ‘Wanted That Big WWE Scene’ with Conor McGregor

Mixed martial arts coach Andy Ryan has said Bellator “wanted that big WWE scene” and deserves to shoulder some of the responsibility for Conor McGregor‘s recent storm into the Octagon during Bellator 187 on Friday night.

The Notorious was in attendance to cheer on friend Charlie Ward against John Redmond, a member of Ryan’s Team Ryano. The coach saw McGregor jump in to embrace Ward and clash with referee Mark Goddard after his team-mate knocked Redmond out, but Ryan defended McGregor, per MMA Fighting’s Peter Carroll:

“I honestly feel like the promotion and the commission need to take some of the blame here because they were more interested in trying not to upset Conor than looking after John Redmond.

“John missed out on some attention that he needed because the event security didn’t have a handle on the situation.”

Ryan suggested McGregor wasn’t treated with the same strictness an average spectator would and added: “I just think the promotions wanted that. They wanted that big WWE scene in the cage. Irish MMA doesn’t want that, but the promotions certainly do.”

MMA reporter Luke Thomas provided a breakdown of the incident that unfolded in Dublin:

A scuffle between UFC lightweight champion McGregor and Goddard broke out after the latter scolded the trespasser for entering the Octagon while the recently knocked out Redmond was still being inspected and the official result determined.

Ward, who trains at John Kavanagh’s SBG in Dublin—the same gym often attended by McGregor—finished Redmond with only a second left in the first round, resulting in some confusion as to whether the fight was over.

McGregor’s excitement for his team-mate seemingly got the better of him, although The MMA Hour host Ariel Helwani has nodded to another recent example of the fighter overstepping his boundaries:

The Notorious addressed Friday’s events in an unapologetic, since-deleted Twitter post, but Brett Okamoto of ESPN reported it read: “Bloke KO’d on floor bout a minute straight and ref trying to say fights not over Conor. That’s when I lost it. F— yous all.”

Ryan empathised with the UFC star and admitted “emotions are going to be running high” for McGregor when he’d just seen his friend win via KO, eager to see Bellator step in and admit some fault in the controversy.

One would think one of the most talented mixed martial artists on the planet would have the discipline to oblige Bellator rules, however, even if the promotion was hoping for, as Ryan puts it, some form of WWE pantomime.

Conor McGregor Responds To Bellator 187 Incident – Then Deletes It

The UFC may have delivered a hard-hitting, under-the-radar event with last Saturday’s (Sat., November 11, 2017) UFC Fight Night 120 from Norfolk, Virginia, but the overall focus of the mixed martial arts (MMA) world was Conor McGregor’s all-out melee at Friday’s Bellator 187 from Dublin.

The UFC champion caused a chaotic scene when after teammate Charlie Ward beat fellow Irishman John Redmond, the MMA megastar rushed into the cage for an extremely aggressive celebration with Ward before shoving referee Marc Goddard and slapping a security guard.

Any potential punishment remains to be seen, but McGregor finally addressed the controversy (sort of) earlier today on Twitter before quickly deleting it. Check out his response courtesy of The MMA Bible here:

McGregor not surprisingly took a standoffish position in his brief reply, sticking to his stance that Goddard was trying to let the bout go on even though it was clear Redmond was badly hurt.

While that may be understandable, it was still an unnecessary and over-the-top reaction that could see McGregor suspended and fined. Considering the two athletic commissions he’s licensed in (Nevada and New York) didn’t oversee the bout in another country, don’t be surprised if he isn’t as well.

Fight to Win Pro 54, Abu Dhabi Grand Slam and Show the Art super fight results

The world of competitive grappling never sleeps as yet another weekend passed with intense action across the country and the world. This recap looks back at some of the action from the weekend of November 10 through November 12, looking at some of the biggest match-ups, outcomes and events the industry saw through the last few days.

Down in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam brought together some of the biggest names in the sport. When the event was over there were a number of new athletes to watch, along with some mainstays continuing their run of great performances.

Ana Carolina Vieira put on a show in Brazil as she took over the 70 kilograms division. She defeated all three of her opponents via submission; looking dominant in each outing. Beatriz Mesquita took the title in the 62 kilograms group, defeating Bianca Basilio by the score of 6-0. Amanda Nogueira and Claudia do Val were both victorious in their own campaigns; winning the 55 and 90 kilogram divisions respectively. Mayssa Bastos was also awarded a default gold medal in the 49 kilogram group.

On the men’s side of the bracket there were a number of new champions and returning top contenders. Jose Carlos de Lima defeated David Herrera for the 56 kilogram title. Hiago George defeated Joao Miyao in one of the top matches of the event; taking the title by one advantage after a 6-6 tie to take the 62 kilogram gold medal. Joao Goncalves defeated Rafael Mansur to win the 69 kilogram division. Hugo Marques was another big winner as he found a way to defeat a great veteran in Ricardo Lima in the 77 kilogram division. To round out the male black belt winners, Isaque Bahiense, Patrick Gaudio and Gerard Labinski took home gold medals in the 85, 94 and 110 kilogram divisions respectively.

Back in the United States, Fight to Win Pro continued its weekly push as one of the major promotions in the competitive grappling industry. At Fight to Win Pro 54 it would be Danielle Alvarez who would be crowned champion as she defeated Tammi Musumeci in the 130-pound black belt gi matchup.

Even though both women pulled guard right from the start they attacked each other relentlessly; going for foot attacks from the onset. They would alternate between toe holds and straight ankle locks, while mixing in attempts to take each other’s back. Due to her aggressiveness, it would be Alvarez that would take the title via referee’s decision.

Multiple titles were decided this evening as well. Edmaicon Moraes defeated Aaron Brooks via cross choke to take the 155-pounds brown belt gi championship. Alex Lane defeated Bobby Alexander via split decision to win the 170-pounds brown belt gi title. Matheus Gabriel defeated Vinny Saenz by decision to win the 145-pound brown belt gi title. In one of the Fight of the Nights Chelsah Lyons defeated Tara White via decision to earn the women’s 155-pound brown belt gi title. Match replays are available on FloGrappling.com.

Black belts David Porter and Chris Civello had a super fight under the Show the Art banner. Both men were very aggressive with their attacks and after more than 20 minutes of action it would be Porter locking in what looked to be a very tight belly down forcing Civello to verbally tab.

Every weekend there’s some form of competitive grappling going on for the masses to enjoy. With so much action going on across the world, it’s each to catch big name fan favorites, and up and comers taking the grappling space by storm.
