Alex Morono has heaped praise on Donald Cerrone after beating the MMA legend at UFC Vegas 26 this past weekend.

‘Cowboy’ was a significant favourite against Alex Morono heading into UFC Vegas 26.

Morono had stepped up on short notice after Diego Sanchez was pulled from the fight and cut by the UFC last week.

Despite that, Morono was able to pick up the biggest win of his career, stopping the MMA veteran in the second round of their co-main event bout.

In the aftermath of UFC Vegas 26, Morono took to social media to react to his victory and shower his opponent with praise.

“Got the W!!! What a crazy week. Honored to share the Co-main in the octagon with Cowboy,” Morono wrote. “One of the baddest mother fuckers to ever do it. Couldn’t be more proud to bring this victory back to Texas. The support is always so much appreciated. Huge shout out to my coaches @matthewparkwald and @sayifsaud keeping me in line and laser focused. 19-7. @ufc #tko #ufcfightnight #martialarts #ufcapex #legend”

Post-fight, Cerrone announced his intention to continue fighting despite being winless in his last six fights.

“I’m sure now there will be a lot of talk of, ‘Maybe he’ll retire. Maybe this is the right time.’ But that isn’t anywhere in my train of thought,” Cerrone said on the UFC on ESPN 24 post-fight show. “I have to figure something out. I feel like I came out, started hard. Who knows? We’ll have to watch it, assess it, see what’s going on. I’m in good spirits. I’ll go home and see my two boys, hang out with my family. Shitty night at the office but hopefully UFC isn’t sending me off anywhere and you guys will see me again.

Cerrone later told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, that his intention is to compete at lightweight moving forward.

“I don’t know what to answer to you on, ‘Is it that time?’ I don’t know. I don’t feel like it,” Cerrone said. “But how I feel and how I perform are two different things. It sucks. Who knows? I want to go back to ’55. No excuses. That kid came in and was ready.”

I’ll never go out like this,” Cerrone added. “There’s no way I’ll end like this. I couldn’t let my legacy end like this.”

On short notice, Alex Morono has scored the most high-profile victory of his UFC stint so far, finishing former lightweight title challenger, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone with a first round barrage before the klaxon.

Meeting the veteran Albuquerque-based striker on short notice as he replaced the released, Diego Sanchez — Morono started in a timely fashion, sprinting across the Octagon, almost reminiscent of former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor‘s early approach against Cerrone.

Tying up in the clinch for the opening minute, Morono eventually broke away and began winging shots in the pocket against Cerrone who attempted to find his mark with a left body kick, which he found on numerous occasions.

Slipping and firing off a swift and perfectly-placed counter overhand right, Morono forced a wobble out of Cerrone, who began to circle away. Forcing the Denver-native to circle back to the fence, Morono, under the tutelage of Sayif Saud at Fortis MMA — reached with a right hand and left hook, eventually closing down Cerrone with a barrage, finishing the future Hall of Famer before the first round concluded.

Below, catch the highlights from Morono’s first round stoppage win over Cerrone.
