Carlos Condit earned the nickname ‘The Natural Born Killer’ through many a bloody and brutal battle. Condit’s slick Muay Thai and dogged determination have won fans over with a fighting style that took him to the interim welterweight title.

But Condit didn’t look the same in his last outing against Neil Magny at UFC 219, which occurred after a lengthy self imposed 16-month layoff.

Condit revealed this at Wednesday’s open workout via MMA Fighting leading into UFC On FOX 29:

“In the [Magny] fight, it was odd. I felt super lazy and lackadaisical, and I didn’t realize it until I was kind of in the midst of the fight, that I was like, I just kinda didn’t have — I don’t know. I don’t know what it was.”

“Obviously it wasn’t a great fight for me, and I don’t feel like I was myself, and I’m really looking forward to this fight, getting out there and being myself again.

“Proximity to danger definitely brings out the best in me. If it’s somebody who’s, like, threatening my safety and well-being, it definitely I think brings the tiger out. And Matt was that fight, and I think the fight with ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira will be that as well.”

Condit says changes to his preparation have improved his mindset going into his fight with ‘Cowboy’ Oliveira.

Whereas he was coming off of a 16-month layoff leading into the fight with Magny, this fight will be a quick turnaround, and Condit says he would have fought sooner if Matt Brown hadn’t pulled out of their matchup.

“A lot of it was in the preparation. I put in a legit serious camp and I feel like I’m all-in. I was all-in in training camp. Like, I really, really pushed hard. In the past I’ve had really big fights, put in really, really hard training camps. And this last one [against Magny], I trained hard, but I don’t think that I — I don’t know, I wasn’t all-in.

“In training, in my preparation, in my mindset, I’ve been all-in for this fight since the beginning, so I think that’s part of it.”

Do you expect a different Carlos Condit this time around?

UFC 218 went down tonight (Saturday, December 2, 2017) from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan. The night was headlined by a championship rematch between new featherweight king Max Holloway defending against 145-pound GOAT Jose Aldo. Their battle, which Holloway once again won by third-round TKO, would have been a lock for Fight of the Night on any normal card. But not UFC 218.

On the prelims, welterweights Yancy Medeiros and Alex Oliveira made a gentlemen’s agreement to eschew any form of defense. Instead, they mercilessly bludgeoned each other for the better part of three rounds. The first was particularly violent and insane. Medeiros broke “Cowboy’s” nose, which spurt blood everywhere, then got dropped multiple times himself. Oliveira seemed on the cusp of getting Medeiros out of there on several occasions but never could.

Despite the beating, the Hawaiian stayed relatively fresh as Oliveira faded down the stretch, perhaps sped along by the shattered nose. Yancy put the nail in the coffin with one final salvo on the retreating and obviously spent Brazilian. Their unforgettable war – and contender for Fight of the Year – garnered them both an extra $50,000.

The fight that was targeted as a FOTY contender going in was between Justin Gaethje and Eddie Alvarez, and they delivered, but in a different way. We didn’t see both men repeatedly stagger one another, only to come back from the brink and return the favor, as we’ve seen them do countless times before. Instead, the lightweight sluggers stood toe-to-toe and consistently put hands and feet on each other in a technical but ultra-violent chess match.

Gaethje went to his patented leg kicks, but perhaps not often enough. A noted weakness of Alvarez, the former champion soon showed signs that they affected him, finally dropping in the third round. But “The Underground King” had been putting body shots in the bank as well. Alvarez threw tight, multi-punch combinations to the head and body, gradually breaking down the inhumanly durable Gaethje.

Alvarez ended the war with one well-placed knee to the face in the third round, instantly raising both hands in the air as Gaethje collapsed at his feet. The two warriors took the second Fight of the Night and the matching $50,000 checks that go with it.

There isn’t a much better way to start tonight’s (Sat., December 2, 2017) UFC 218 from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, with the kind of all-out war that welterweights Yancy Medeiros and Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira just participated in.

The bout is a clear “Fight of the Year” contender, with both landing some absolutely huge shots and withstanding never-ending onslaughts from the other.

It all started with Medieros landing some huge shots in the opening frame that appeared to break Oliveira’s nose, but he somehow survived to drop his Hawaiian foe with some huge power punches of his own:

The second round saw more of the same as both appeared to be walking forward like zombies, with Medeiros eventually reversing a takedown from Oliveira with a perfect judo throw to land on top and finish the round with some absolutely massive elbows:

Finally, Medeiros was able to reverse a disadvantageous position after having his back taken to get back to his feet and unload a fight-ending sequence on a clearly injured Oliveira, thus ending what may just be 2017’s ‘Fight of the Year’ so far:
