UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira is backing Jon Jones to become a two-division champion at UFC 285

Former multi-time UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones is expected to challenge former interim UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane for the vacant UFC heavyweight championship at UFC 285, going down on March 4, 2023.

This fight booking was a result of former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou‘s recent release from the promotion.

Jon Jones was expected to face Ngannou for the title on a couple of occasions, an incredible match up that never came to fruition, so now we have the most dominant champion in mixed martial arts history facing the no. 1 heavyweight contender, and Alex Pereira likes Jones’ chances to capture the throne as he recently stated in an interview with MMAFighting:

“I think he’s really coming to dominate. It’s never easy, but I think this fight will be much harder than if he had fought Ngannou. Ngannou is stronger and would want to trade punches with Jon Jones, and Jon Jones is very experienced, has great defense, so I think Jon Jones would beat Ngannou (easier).

“This next fight (against Gane) is a bit harder for him, but I also think he wins. It’s a bit more difficult because (Gane) is smart, and a bit more scared in a good way, not to come trading with Jon Jones, which makes him a more difficult fight.”

This answer is a tad surprising coming from Pereira, who’s a fellow kickboxing champion like Gane.

Prior to transitioning to MMA full-time, Alex Pereira was a two-division GLORY kickboxing champion, the first ever in fact, and he left the sport in 2021 with a record of 33-7 (21 knockouts).

Ciryl Gane on the other hand went 13-0 (9 knockouts) as a professional kickboxer, having won the AFMT national championship prior to his full-time switch to MMA in 2018.

Since then, Gane has gone 11-1, only losing a narrow decision to Francis Ngannou himself, whilst laying claim to the interim UFC championship, as well as the TKO heavyweight championship earlier on, a title he won in his first fight before defending it twice and joining the UFC with a record of just 3-0.

Then we have Jon Jones, who’s 26-1 (1 NC) as a professional, his only defeat coming via DQ in a fight he was dominating. He came to the UFC at just 6-0, as we’ve seen him go undefeated through 22 fights in the worlds leading promotion, and he’s 14-0 in world title fights coming in.

Is Alex Pereira right, does Jon Jones beat Ciryl Gane to become the UFC heavyweight champion?

UFC 307 takes place on Saturday night, and MMA News is here to bring you the final faceoffs from the ceremonial weigh-ins!

The upcoming pay-per-view event at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah provides a chance for UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex Pereira to further enhance his legacy on mixed martial arts’ biggest stage.

After capturing the gold in November 2023 and withstanding challenges from Jamahal Hill and Ji?í Procházka this year, “Poatan” is next tasked with stalling the championship ambitions of Khalil Rountree to continue his reign atop the 205-pound mountain.

Title stakes will also be present for the co-main event, which will see Raquel Pennington make her first defense of the bantamweight belt opposite returning ex-divisional queen Julianna Peña.

Elsewhere on the UFC 307 card, the legendary José Aldo looks to continue his pursuit of a late-career title shot after a successful return from retirement this past May, Kayla Harrison makes her second Octagon outing, the always entertaining Kevin Holland shoots for the middleweight top 10, and former two-time strawweight queen Carla Esparza enters the cage for the final time.

Ahead of the event, all 24 fighters successfully made weight. With that, every fight has remained intact, and all that remains on Friday night is for the athletes to face off one final time at the UFC 307 ceremonial weigh-ins!

Check out a live stream via the official UFC YouTube channel below, commencing at 6 p.m. ET.

Khalil Rountree Jr. recently shared his determination to pay tribute to his late father by securing a victory at UFC 307.

“The War Horse” has a chance to bring his dreams to life as he prepares to challenge reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira this weekend at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Rountree Jr. has been a fixture on the UFC roster since 2016, delivering numerous highlight-reel performances. However, many MMA fans may not be familiar with his personal journey. The Ultimate Fighter season 23 alum carries a legacy tied to his father, Roderick Khalil Rountree, who was a road manager for the iconic music group Boyz II Men.

Tragically, in May 1992, when “The War Horse” was just two years old, his father was murdered by three armed robbers at the Gold Coast hotel in Chicago.

The unfortunate demise of his father cast a shadow over Rountree Jr.’s early years, leading him down a dark path of substance abuse that nearly cost him his life. Struggling to cope, he seemed headed for self-destruction before discovering MMA, which became the key to turning his life around.

Rountree Fights To Honor His Father & Sees UFC Title As Perfect Tribute

During a recent interview with New York Post Sports, Rountree Jr., revealed that his path into fighting was driven by a deep need to pay tribute to his late father. The Californian expressed that this title shot is the culmination of a lifetime of hard work and dedication. He sees this opportunity as a moment to bring new honor to his family’s legacy, especially in memory of his father.

“I think, for me, it’s everything that I’ve worked for, really. Not knowing my dad growing up, but knowing what happened to him,” Rountree Jr. said. “I always just wanted to — or, not always, but there came a time, especially when I started fighting, that I wanted to honor him and make something of myself so that I can imagine him looking down and being proud.”

“Like ‘wow, my son was this kid that had no courage and locked himself inside his room’ to — ‘wow, this guy’s fighting lions in the cage for a world championship.’ So it’s really big, and I’m so excited for this moment and just to be able to be in this situation to bring more honor and more light to the work that my father did and also the work that I’ve put in.”

“The War Horse” is currently on an impressive five-fight winning streak, with his last appearance in the Octagon being a third-round knockout of Anthony Smith in December 2023. Rountree Jr. faced a setback this past May when he was handed a 4.5-month ban after testing positive for a steroid hormone. However, the suspension was lifted on September 18.

The dangerous power of Alex Pereira is questioned by Nick Diaz

Getting into the boxing ring seems like the normal path for former MMA fighters. Brazil’s Alex Pereira already has experience in a professional boxing match having won his boxing debut by way of knockout in round 3.

‘Poatan’ is also famed between MMA and kickboxing for his thunderous knockout power. His dangerous left hook has led to dozens of knockout wins between the two sports. In GLORY Kickboxing, Pereira was able to become a two-division world champion. Upon entering the UFC, he was able to go on a consecutive KO win streak to capture the middleweight crown.

Pereira defeated his rival Israel Adesanya last year in the fifth round to earn the UFC middleweight world title at UFC 281. Adesanya will be seeking to recapture his lost gold when they rematch at UFC 287 at the end of April later this year.

Nick Diaz is a former Strikeforce world champion who has fought the likes of Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva, among others. He has not fought since his TKO loss to Robbie Lawler in 2021. It is not certain what the future of Nick Diaz will be.
