Alexander Volkanovski backs lightweight move for Max Holloway stop beating my contenders UFC

Undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski has backed former division titleholder and opponent, Max Holloway to consider a move to the lightweight pile, calling for him to stop “beating up” contenders at 145lbs.

Volkanovski, the current undisputed featherweight gold holder, most recently headlined UFC 284 back in February of this year in Perth, Australia – suffering his first promotional loss in a unanimous decision defeat to lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev.

Prior to that, New South Wales native, Volkanovski co-headlined UFC 276 back in July of last year against Holloway, handing the Hawaiian a third loss in the pair’s trilogy fight, cementing his status as featherweight kingpin.

Expected to return to the Octagon at International Fight Week in July at UFC 290, Volkanovski is targeted to clash with interim featherweight champion, Yair Rodríguez in a championship unification fight.

Alexander Volkanovski praises Max Holloway following UFC Kansas City win

Sharing his thoughts on Holloway’s recent UFC Fight Night Kansas City victory over the surging, Arnold Allen over the weekend, Volkanovski failed to rule out a fourth fight with the former champion in the future, however, urged him to stop taking out contenders at featherweight.

“I remember saying to him (Max Holloway) after the last fight, I just said to him, ‘Get out of my division. Stop beating up my contenders,” Alexander Volkanovski told The Mac Life during a recent interview. “I’m saying stuff like that to him. A lot of people are gonna sit there, before last [Saturday] night, ‘Oh, he’s fallen off’ and all this stuff. Nah, it’s not that. Trust me. Wait until he fights again and you’re gonna forget about that the next time.”

“He proved it last night (against Arnold Allen), he looked great,” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “You feel bad too, in that situation, like, ‘Why does that guy gotta be here and be in my damn division?’ Obviously, Max is a cool dude, as well, great fighter. It’s a tricky situation for Max, that’s for sure, but you never know.”

As mentioned previously, Holloway headlined UFC Kansas City against Ipswich native, Allen, landing a unanimous judging victory – before noting his interest in fighting former two-time title challenger, Chan Sung Jung in a rumored return to Australia for the organization

Max Holloway I am a better fighter than Alexander Volkanovski UFC Kansas City

Despite suffering three consecutive losses to undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski since 2020, former division kingpin, Max Holloway insists that he is still the better fighter when it comes to the UFC duo.

Holloway, the current #2 ranked featherweight contender, is slated to return to the Octagon this weekend atop a UFC Fight Night Kansas City card – taking on the surging Ipswitch native, Arnold Allen over the course of five rounds in a potential title-eliminator.

Sidelined from active competition since co-headlined UFC 276 back in July of last year during International Fight Week against the above-mentioned Volkanovski, suffering a unanimous decision loss in the pair’s trilogy clash.

Prior to that one-sided judging defeat, the Hawaiian had turned in a close rematch loss to the New South Wales native on ‘Fight Island’ in 2020, after dropping his undisputed featherweight championship to the Australian back in December of the year prior.

In his only victory in that series of fights with Volkanovski, Max Holloway managed to land a close, decision win over recently minted interim featherweight titleholder, Yair Rodríguez – who is set to feature in a title unification clash with Volkanovski at UFC 290 in July.

Max Holloway welcomes a fourth clash with Alexander Volkanovski

Failing to rule out a fourth fight with Volkanovski despite failing to lodge a single win over the featherweight best, Holloway insists that he is still a better fighter than the Joe Lopez-trained technician.

“What kind of question is that?” Max Holloway asked ESPN MMA during a recent interview if he believed he was a better fighter than Alexander Volkanovski. “You know what I mean – yes, I do believe I am a better fighter than Alexander Volkanovski. If I didn’t believe I was a better fighter than him, then why I am fighting in the same weight class as the guy? Ask anybody who lost to anybody, do you think you are a better fighter then this guy? Of course, they are going to say [yes].”

“Once we start saying, ‘No I think [he is a better fighter]’ – once you get the acceptance that this guy might be better than me, then you don’t belong, you should retire,” Max Holloway explained. “Guys don’t understand that.”

Furthermore, Holloway, who briefly made a lightweight excursion in an interim title rematch with Dustin Poirier back in April 2019, failed to rule out the possibility of making a leap to the 155lbs division in the future following his Kansas City main event against the aforenoted, Allen.

Francis Ngannou and Alexander Volkanovski went absolutely wild when their close friend Israel Adesanya knocked out Alex Pereira at UFC 287.

The knockout was extremely sudden and electrifying. Adesanya had his back to the cage and was getting lit up by bombs from Pereira when suddenly, ‘The Last Stylebender’ unleashed a perfectly timed shovel hook with his left and followed it up with a laser beam of a right hand.

This staggered ‘Poatan’, and Adesanya would fake with his left before connecting with another right hook that sent Pereira unconscious and crashing to the canvas. For good measure, ‘The Last Stylebender’ connected with a final nuclear warhead of a hammer fist to well and truly make sure the fight was indeed finished.

This would make Adesanya and Pereira 1-1 in MMA and 3-1 in all, as Poatan has two notorious victories over Adesanya from their kickboxing days and also defeated ‘The Last Stylebender’ upon their first fateful meeting inside the cage at UFC 281.
