The main event at UFC Fight Night 88 will pit Thomas Almeida against Cody Garbrandt in a key bantamweight showdown.

But that will not be the only 135-pound match between Top-10 fighters on the docket, as Aljamain Sterling fights Bryan Caraway May 29 from Las Vegas. Newsday first reported the contest on Thursday.

Sterling (12-0) is a perfect 4-0 inside the Octagon, signing a new fight contract following his win over Johnny Eduardo in December. His other UFC victories have come vs. Takeya Mizugaki, Hugo Viana and Cody Gibson.

Caraway (20-7) has won six of his last eight, including a July victory vs. Eddie Wineland. Caraway, of course, is the long-time boyfriend of current UFC champion Miesha Tate.

Bryan Caraway might be just as well known for his own MMA skills as those of his girlfriend, newly-crowned UFC female bantamweight champion Miesha Tate.

But Caraway (20-7) isn’t about to let those who “troll” him by referring to the fighter as “Mr. Tate” play a role in his career.

Aljamain Sterling, an unbeaten bantamweight who recently signed a new contract with the UFC, has been calling for a bout vs. Caraway for well over a year now. And while the alum of The Ultimate Fighter is willing to grant him such a match, it isn’t over his comments.

“This, to me, is not emotional. That’s now where the sport goes for me,” said Caraway, in an interview with MMAjunkie.com. “If it starts going like that, it becomes a circus. It becomes a bullying mentality and teaches all these kids that if you talk crap and bully people, you get what you want in life. That’s not the way I’m trying to go.

“I’m not trying to get to where I want to go because I’m bullying people. I want to fight (Sterling) because he’s ranked fifth in the world. I don’t care what he says.”

Caraway has won five of his seven UFC fights, including three of his last four. His last match, though, came in July of last year when he bested Eddie Wineland.

“I don’t know what the UFC’s plan is,” he admitted. “They’re trying to say I’m ducking people, but here I am calling out these guys and it’s not happening.”

It may not have been the most hyped mixed martial arts (MMA) event of 2016, but last night’s (Sunday, February 21, 2016) UFC Fight Night 83 from the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, delivered a heavy-hitting mix of great fights and finishes that earned it a deserving recognition as a very solid under-the-radar event.

There was a great women’s bout between Lauren Murphy and Kelly Faszholz that earned ‘Fight of the Night’ on the Fight Pass prelims, while the fight right after it between Ashlee Evans-Smith and Marion Reneau resulted in yet another MMA scoring controversy that only furthered the backlash towards the scoring system in place and the judges present in Pittsburgh that made some head-scratching errors.

There was also the continued rises of a few strong up-and-coming stars, and another return of sorts as recent lightweight title challenger Donald Cerrone returned to winning ways with an impressive first round submission of late replacement Alex Oliveira. All in all, it was a strong card that continued the UFC’s strong recent efforts and will continue promotional momentum into the absolutely blockbuster events scheduled for two weeks to come.

Let’s take a look back at the five biggest takeaways from UFC Fight Night 83.

Well, the free agency saga regarding No. 5-ranked bantamweight Aljamain “The Funk Master” Sterling has now come to an end.

Appearing on today’s (February 15, 2016) edition of the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Sterling announced that he had indeed resigned with the UFC, the world’s largest MMA promotion, after tons of speculation that he would be heading to Bellator or even World Series of Fighting (WSOF).

At 26 years old, Sterling is undoubtedly one of the bantamweight division’s brightest prospects, but apparently he had felt as if he wasn’t offered a fair deal ahead of his most recent fight, a submission victory over Johnny Eduardo last December in Las Vegas.

That being said, he fought out his contract and tested the waters.

After nearly two months of dealing with free agency, Sterling appears to have received what he wanted from the UFC, and the Serra-Longo product will now be spending the foreseeable future inside of the Octagon.

“I’m 100 percent happy with my decision,” Sterling said. “I think I got a better deal for myself than I would have had.”

“The Funk Master” is currently undefeated at 12-0 in his professional career, and has won all four of his Octagon bouts including three by way of finish.

Possibly one fight away from a shot at gold in the contender scarce bantamweight division, Sterling’s next fight will be pivotal to his title hopes.

Who would you like to see “The Funk Master” meet next?
