With Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III tentatively scheduled for UFC 130 (May 28th, Las Vegas), Anthony Pettis has decided to fight again rather than wait all year for the title shot he’d been promised — a risky proposition considering how stacked the lightweight division is at the top. According to Heavy.com, Pettis will likely take on Clay Guida at either UFC 130 or UFC 131, which goes down two weeks later in Vancouver. It’s a kick in the nuts for perennial contender Kenny Florian, who was angling for the Pettis fight himself.

You’d sort of hope that Pettis/Guida happens at #130, so that if Pettis wins, he can enter the cage following the main event and face off with the lightweight champion in a "you have my belt, homey" moment. Of course if Edgar vs. Maynard results in another tie, we’re all screwed. Not out of the realm of possibility, considering how evenly matched those guys are.

Pettis is on a four-fight win streak, and is coming off his WEC lightweight title-winning performance against Ben Henderson, aided by The Greatest Kick the World Has Ever Seen. (By the way, Pettis’s trainer Duke Roufus told Sherdog that Pettis has "10 other [highlight-reel] kicks and moves for the UFC and he’s going to prove it." Be very afraid.) Guida has won his last three fights by submission, most recently choking out Takanori Gomi at UFC 125. Mike Roberts, the manager of middleweight Chael Sonnen, says his client’s career is “far from over” even though he’s taking a UFC hiatus, finishing up a steroids suspension and awaiting a sentence for money laundering.

According to Roberts, UFC president Dana White’s decision to freeze Sonnen’s contract was mutual, one in which both sides decided would be best for Sonnen’s future.

“[Sonnen] was never suspended,” Roberts said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Dana just thought it would be in Chael’s best interest to get his life together and get everything cleared up in his personal life, that when he comes back to fight, it’s going to be all about the fight.”

UFC 125 Medical Suspensions were released today and it looks like Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar could be suspended until July 1st, making the belt unavailable for probably a 6 to 8 week training camp after that. Number one contender, Gray Maynard has also been medically suspended due to facial lacerations until February 16th with no contact until January 23rd. This all sounds very disappointing for the two lightweights, who would like a rematch as early as possible and even worse for Anthony Pettis, who may not get a chance to fight for maybe a year; however it has also been reported that Edgar could be cleared as early as February 16th. If we learned anything from Edgar’s comeback after the 1st round of his fight against Maynard and his decision to attend the post fight press conference rather than head to the hospital as he was expected to do, we will be seeing Edgar and Maynard back in the Octagon much sooner than any medical professional would probably suggest is a good idea.

The UFC might not have a better main event all year than it had in its first main event of the year, as Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fought for 25 furious minutes and showed why they’re the two best lightweights in the world.

Is it disappointing that Edgar-Maynard ended up a draw? In a sense, it’s always disappointing, in any competition, not to see a definitive winner. But this time the draw was the right decision (I scored it 47-47) Fortunately, the UFC made the right decision and said after the fight that Edgar and Maynard will get it on one more time to determine who’s No. 1.

At the moment, Edgar and Maynard are 1-2 on my list and just about everyone else’s. Take a look at how the rest of the lightweight rankings stack up below.

LAS VEGAS – Coming into UFC 125, the main event lightweight championship matchup between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard was not one that captured the imaginations of most MMA fans. By the time they were done, it was the talk of the MMA world.

Edgar overcame a disastrous first-round beating and staged an epic comeback to climb back into the match. After five hard-fought rounds, the pair both left unsatisfied after the cageside judges scored it a draw. Judge Marcos Rosales scored it 48-46 for the champ Edgar while judge Glen Trowbridge saw it the opposite way, Maynard 48-46. The third judge, Patricia Morse Jarman, had it 47-47.

“I did think I won the fight,” Edgar said. “First round wasn’t my round, but last four I think I won.”

“I thought it was mine,” Maynard echoed. “I thought I had the belt.”
