Former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Anthony Smith will headline UFC Hamburg this Sunday (July 22, 2018) on FOX Sports 1 from the Barclaycard Arena in Hamburg, Germany.

To cap off the UFC Hamburg media day earlier today (Fri. July 20, 2018), Shogun and “Lionheart” faced-off just days before they lock horns inside the Octagon.

Check out the video below:

The 36-year-old Rua has looked rather impressive inside the cage lately. He’s currently on a three fight win-streak over names such as Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Corey Anderson and Gian Villante. With a potential win over Smith, the Brazilian is campaigning hard for a shot at UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier’s title.

Smith is currently on the rise in his UFC career. After having a three fight win-streak snapped by Thiago Santos in February, he bounced back with a hellacious first round finishing of former UFC 205-pound champ Rashad Evans in June at UFC 225. He now looks to add another former champion to his list of victims.

Anthony Smith Says Daniel Cormier Unintentionally Made Him Contender

Anthony Smith thinks Daniel Cormier unknowingly made him a contender at light heavyweight.

Daniel Cormier may have unintentionally created one of the next title challengers in the light heavyweight division.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will take on rising light heavyweight prospect Anthony “Lionheart” Smith in the main event of UFC Hamburg this weekend (Sunday, July 22nd, 2018).

Smith is coming off an impressive KO over former champ Rashad Evans at June’s UFC 225, a performance that “Lionheart” has parlayed straight into a short notice main event fight with former light heavyweight champ “Shogun” Rua.

Rua, on the other hand, has had a bit of a resurgence as of late. The Brazilian is riding a three-fight win streak, and with an impressive performance could be looking at another title shot, at least according to Cormier.

For Smith, the chance to main event a UFC card against a legend like “Shogun” is validation that all his hard work is starting to pay off, along with his new outlook on life.

“Since I moved up to 205, the weight is no longer an issue, and the name literally doesn’t matter,” Smith told MMAjunkie Radio on Monday. “You could have said it’s Brock Lesnar, and I would have had the same reaction.”

The move to 205 pounds has been a long time coming for the Nebraska native. Smith is every bit of his 6’4″ frame and could easily compete in the heavyweight division if he chose to.

Still, “Lionheart” doesn’t foresee Rua standing and trading with him for too long anyway.

“He’s not an idiot, and he knows if you look at my record, I have the ability to knock you out with anything,” Smith said. “And I’m younger, and I’m going to be bigger than he is.”

“You can’t let ‘Shogun’ bully you and push you around in there,” Smith added. “If you meet ‘Shogun’ in the middle, there’s going to be two bulls running into each other, and we’re going to figure out which one is bigger. And I’m OK with that.”

Much is still to be decided in Hamburg, however, “DC’s” comments leave much to be desired.

That is, if “Shogun wins impressively then he deserves a light heavyweight title shot, but if Smith is victorious he believes he should be the next man to challenge the new champ-champ for the 205-pound strap. In that sense, Smith thinks Cormier unintentionally made him a title contender:

“If he thinks ‘Shogun’ is the next guy, and I beat him, then I think rightfully, he gave me the opportunity to put my hand up,” Smith explained. “I think that he did that for me, and I don’t even know if he realizes that.”

“He isn’t excited about the Gustafsson fight, whether it’s a money thing or a new match-up. I think I’m a fresh face, and that’s an exciting match-up for the fans, me versus ‘DC.’ But I haven’t even thought about that right now.”

Smith made quick work of former champion Rashad Evans at UFC 225, thus igniting the talk of the “Lionheart” being a modern day legend killer.

“The whole legend killer thing is cool,” Smith said. “That’s the thing people are attaching to me, but eventually, people are going to wonder how I’m going to fare with guys who are closer to my age.”

Shogun Thinks He’ll Deserve ‘DC’ Title Fight With Another Win

Is this actually a possibility?

Shogun Rua believes he deserves a shot at Daniel Cormier’s 205-pound title should he defeat Anthony Smith at UFC Hamburg.

Rua will challenge Smith in the main event of the UFC Fight Night Hamburg event on July 22nd. Smith might not be ranked in the top 15 just yet, but the Brazilian still thinks a win over the young prospect would do well for his 205-pound title bid.

Cormier controversially stated recently on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show that he’d like to fight Rua before he steps into the Octagon with Brock Lesnar for their heavyweight title fight. Shogun recently spoke to MMA Fighting and said he’d be open to a quick turnaround fight with “DC” in November:

”I think Cormier is a great athlete, a compete fighter,” Rua said. “Winning this fight I absolutely deserve this chance because of my history and my career in MMA.”

Cormier defeated Stipe Miocic last weekend (Sat. July 7, 2018) to capture the UFC heavyweight championship. The victory made him the second-ever dual weight champion in UFC history. “DC” made quick work of Miocic, finishing him in the first round via knockout. Many were surprised with how fast Cormier was able to finish the fight – but not Rua:

”It was no surprise to me,” “Shogun” said. “Cormier is used to fighting big guys at heavyweight and beat Miocic decisively. I had no favorites in this fight, anyone could win.”

In regards to a potential fight with Cormier, Rua knows it would be no easy task. He credited Cormier for being skilled in all aspects of the mixed martial arts (MMA) game, but for now, is focusing his full attention on what’s in front of him – Anthony Smith:

”It’s tough because he’s well-rounded, is good standing and on the ground, has one of the best wrestling in the UFC,” Rua said. “It’s tough because you have to train everything for him. It’s a big challenge, but you become a target when you have the belt because that’s what everyone dreams with.

“But I’m actually not thinking about the belt now because I have a good opponent ahead of me and I can’t think about it. The belt is my dream, of course, but I have to go step by step. I know that I will be closer if I win this fight.”
