Fallout: Paul Daley, Brennan Ward, And Flying Knees Of Destruction

C-note

Bellator 170 was filled with some interesting fights. Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen fought an old man match so clunky people thought it was fixed, Hisaki Kato vs. Ralek Gracie played “let’s not actually fight each other” for 3 rds, and Emmanuel Sanchez managed to throw two illegal knees to a downed opponent and still come out on with a victory. However, one thing that was pretty straightforward was Paul “Semtex” Daley’s 1st round flying knee K.O. of Brennan Ward, and even more straightforward is the picture of the result.

However, one thing that was pretty straightforward was Paul “Semtex” Daley’s 1st round flying knee K.O. of Brennan Ward, and even more straightforward is the picture of the result.

Daley who has won 6 out of his last 7 fights, only losing to current Bellator welterweight champ Douglas Lima, says the win was bittersweet as he looked over the cage post celebration only to see Ward’s girlfriend crying. It was a pretty vicious knockout which many are already predicting will be up there for K.O. of the year.

After the victory, Daley sent a heartfelt welcome to Rory “The Red King” MacDonald by challenging him to his first match in Bellator. Rory quickly replied with a 20 second of video of Hangover comedian Zack Galifianakis laughing his little heart out.

Rory is coming off two back to back losses against Robbie Lawler and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson with the UFC. While Daley definitely has K.O. power in every limb of his body, Rory definitely has one of the most developed skill set in all of MMA and is used to making power punchers look basic.

MacDonald is waiting to completely heal from repeated nose injuries sustained over his fighting career. No date for a debut has been set.

Tito Ortiz Wants Public Apology From Chael Sonnen

Tito Ortiz was likely pleased with his first round submission victory over Chael Sonnen in the main event of this past weekend’s (Sat., Jan. 21, 2016) Bellator 170 event, but he wasn’t always pleased leading up to the bout, as him and Sonnen went back-and-forth with some nasty trash talk.

Sonnen, a man known as one of the best trash talkers in the history of the sport, took shots at Ortiz each and every time he got the chance too. Because of this, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” wants a public apology from “The American Gangster”:

“I didn’t say anything after the fight,” Ortiz told Fight Hub TV. “He came to my dressing room and said, ‘Good fight, it was an honor, da da da’ and I go, ‘You’ve got to apologize to me in public.’ So we’re gonna see if he has enough balls to apologize to me in public.”

Perhaps Sonnen’s most personal line was when he referenced Ortiz’s ex-wife Jenna Jameson, which was a line that Ortiz believes took things too far:

“I’m a kid who has a lot of respect. I believe in respect. Talking about another person’s family is something wrong to do and for what he did, that’s just the wrong thing to do. That’s always my three rules of s**t-talking: You don’t talk about a person’s family, you don’t talk about a person’s country, and you don’t lie about a person. He did all three of those things, and the big man upstairs took care of it.”

The fight marked the last of Ortiz’s illustrious career, as he left his gloves in the cage, announcing his retirement. Although he looked rejuvenated in the fight, Ortiz appears to be content with his decision:

“I want to go out as my best, no matter what anyone says. I don’t want to go away when people say, ‘Well, he should have left a long time ago.’ I want people to go, ‘He should stay here, he should still stay around.’ But I’m gonna be 42 on Monday. I’ve been in this business for 20 years. I’ve done everything I wanted to do. I’ve became a millionaire, I bought my dream home, I bought my dream car, I bought my dream boat, I’ve been able to give my kids their college tuition, all three of my boys, so I’ve done what I needed to do as a parent, as a man on this Earth and what’s the next thing for me to do is find a different career.”

Tito Ortiz Wants a Public Apology From Chael Sonnen

Tito Ortiz is not quite done with Chael Sonnen, following Saturday’s first round victory over his opponent on Bellator 170 on Saturday Night.

Ortiz had to be prized off of Sonnen by referee Big John McCarthy, which confirmed to many that the negative feeling towards his opponent, and thrash talking was in fact genuine. The Californian was quite clear in stating that he did hold “ill will” towards his fellow, ex-UFC legend, and it appears that submitting him in the first round of their head-to-head has not done anything to increase diplomatic relations between the two.

Ortiz confirmed (via Fight Hub TV) that this will not change, unless Sonnen publicly apologizes:

“I didn’t say anything after the fight; he came to my dressing room and said, ‘Good fight, it was an honor, da da da’ and I go: ‘You’ve got to apologize to me in public.’ So we’re gonna see if he has enough balls to apologize to me in public.”

Sonnen, and expert in trash talking  targeted Tito Ortiz’s personal life, including somewhat close-to-the bone comments regarding ex girlfriend Jenna Jameson, and the financial situation of “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy”. Ortiz felt that Sonnen had crossed the line, and got what he deserved for his ‘lack of class’.

“I’m a kid who has a lot of respect. I believe in respect. Talking about another person’s family is something wrong to do and for what he did, that’s just the wrong thing to do. He did all three of those things, and the big man upstairs took care of it.”

Ortiz is looking towards pastures new, and appeared genuinely happy in finishing his career on a high:

Bellator 170 took place this past weekend (Sat., Jan 21, 2017) from The Forum in Inglewood, California, and while much of the attention was on the main event, a light heavyweight bout between Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen, it was the co-main event that produced what could end up being one of the best finishes of the year.

Decorated kick boxer Paul “Semtex” Daly took on Brennan Ward in a bout that was expected to produce fire works, an expectation that it certainly lived up to. Early on in the first round, Daly landed a vicious spinning elbow before drilling Ward with a brutal flying knee that put “The Irish Bad Boy” to sleep.

Check out the damage done to Ward below (picture courtesy of MMAJunkie’s Mike Bohn):

After the impressive victory, Daley made some noise on the microphone, calling out former UFC welterweight title challenger Rory MacDonald in his post-fight interview. MacDonald signed with Bellator last year, and is expected to make his promotional debut this summer.

Is that a fight you’d like to see?

Rumblings of fight fixing since the Bellator 170 main event aren’t just coming from fans…

At Bellator 170 we saw the end of Tito Ortiz’s 20-year MMA career. Facing Chael Sonnen in the main event, ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ managed to turn back the clock once again. The former UFC light-heavyweight champion had seen hard times over recent years. Suffering a brutal drought in his later UFC run, Ortiz added one final notch to his four-fight Bellator career. Submitting ‘The American Gangster’ in round one, Ortiz gave an emotional speech before leaving his gloves in the cage in retirement.

Although his symbolic gesture was met with tribute and applause, his win has not been without debate. After the finish, a number of videos began circulating, focusing on the final grappling exchanges of the fight. Speculation about certain movements when Sonnen was attempting a choke was pointed out by conspiracy theorists. Essentially, fans were claiming the fight was a work, a fix, and it wasn’t just a handful. Joining in on the debate is none other than former UFC welterweight and analyst Dan Hardy.

Thoughts

Without being accusatory, this isn’t the first time we’ve noticed something up with Bellator main events. Not necessarily the legitimate fights, but the ‘showcase’ bouts. Looking back at Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock and Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie, both were met with massive speculation as to their authenticity. With so many real talents growing in their rankings, why is Bellator wasting time with fights that make them look bad?

Whether you think any of their marquee bouts are fixed or not, shouldn’t BMMA be focusing on legitimacy in the battle vs. the UFC? We’ve been saying it for quite some time now, but the UFC’s little sister needs to grow mature sooner or later.

Chael Sonnen on Loss to Tito Ortiz: ‘I Got Caught in a Position I Couldn’t Get Out of’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9EgzKT4fv8

Chael Sonnen returned to mixed martial arts (MMA) action for the first time since Nov. 2013 last night (Jan. 21) at Bellator 170. Sonnen made his Bellator debut against Tito Ortiz. It was “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’s” final bout.

Ortiz was able to reverse a choke and got to full mount. Sonnen gave up his back and Ortiz finished the fight with a rear-naked choke. It was Sonnen’s second straight defeat. The fight barely lasted two minutes.

At the post-fight press conference, Sonnen said he felt confident going into the bout, but in the end it wasn’t his night:

“I thought I was going to have good minutes tonight. I thought I could beat Tito. I thought I had good positions on him and he had a good position on me, and I accept the result. It was a fair contest. I wanted to get out there and get the experience. I fully expected to win this. I had great coaches and a great camp, and I got caught in a position that I couldn’t get out of.”

Sonnen’s choke attempt early on wasn’t tight enough to stop Ortiz from getting top control. Sonnen admitted he believed it would have success.

“I thought that a guillotine would be a good option. I worked on it a lot. Tito’s also had his neck bother him. He talked about that, I thought maybe that was a good opportunity, but I couldn’t get my leg on the right side. I had my hand where I wanted it, it just didn’t work out and he reversed it.”

Sonnen has gone 1-4 in his last five outings. He has been finished in all of his losses in this stretch. The loss to Ortiz was the first time he was submitted since his first title bout with Anderson Silva.
