Reportedly fighting in his final MMA fight, legendary former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz went out on top by beating rival Chael Sonnen in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., January 21, 2017) Bellator 170 from The Forum in Inglewood, California.

The fight featured some heated trash talk, and it began just as fired up as the press conferences. “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” tagged “The Bad Guy” with a solid shot and transitioned well into a takedown, but Sonnen was able to sweep and secure a guillotine choke that appeared to be somewhat tight. However, he was in half guard, and Ortiz eventually broke free to end up in the mount position.

A few of Ortiz’ patented ground and pound elbows and Sonnen gave up his back, opening a path for an easy rear-naked choke attempt. The hold appeared to not be fully locked in under Sonnen’s chin, but Ortiz cranked until his enemy began to turn purple, eventually tapping out for a victorious final fight in the Bellator cage. After the win, Ortiz let his son Jacob lay his gloves down for the final time.

Paul Daley made a statement tonight (Jan. 21) at Bellator 170. In the co-main event, Daley took on former middleweight contender Brennan Ward. Many expected fireworks and “Semtex” did not disappoint.

Daley was taken down early in the fight, but he was able to get back to his feet quickly. A spinning back elbow from Daley was able to create distance. Once there was separation, it allowed “Semtex” to land a vicious jumping knee to the side of Ward’s head and he was out.

The first round knockout was Daley’s 39th professional win and his 29th knockout. It was Daley’s fifth win inside the Bellator cage. This improves his record in the promotion to 5-1.

After the fight, Daley had some choice words for a certain welterweight making his Bellator debut soon. He said, “If Rory MacDonald step in the cage with me, he’s getting knocked the f*ck out.”

MacDonald took to Twitter to respond:

“Red King” last saw action against Stephen Thompson back in June 2016. He fell short in a unanimous decision loss. Prior, he and Robbie Lawler had a title bout that earned them “Fight of the Year” honors. MacDonald was TKO’d in the final round.

MacDonald decided not to re-sign with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and his next bout will be in a Bellator cage. No fight has been made official for “Red King,” but it’s clear he has someone willing to dance.

During the live broadcast of Bellator 170 tonight (Jan. 21, 2017) at The Forum in Inglewood, California, the promotion announced that a rematch between former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal would be taking place on March 31, 2017 presented on Spike.

Commentator Jimmy Smith also mentioned that the fight would be taking place at heavyweight.

The two rivals met for the first time at Bellator 120 in May 2014 in a bout that Jackson won via unanimous decision, although many felt as if “King Mo” should’ve gotten the nod.

Since then, “Rampage” has won two straight including a unanimous decision victory over Fabio Maldonado at UFC 186 in April 2015 as well as a split decision victory over Satoshi Ishii at Bellator 157 last June.

“King Mo”, on the other hand, has been extremely active since dropping a decision to Jackson. After his fight with “Rampage”, Lawal put together a seven fight win streak before losing to reigning Bellator light heayweight champion Phil Davis last May. He then bounced back with a unanimous decision victory over Ishii before being stopped by Mirko Cro Cop at a Rizin event last month.

Who do you expect to win the rematch between Jackson and Lawal?

‘Big’ John McCarthy Will Referee Tito Ortiz’s Last Fight Tonight at Bellator 170

‘Big’ John McCarthy will oversee the final fight of the MMA legend, Tito Ortiz tonight.

Tito Ortiz makes will say his last goodbye to MMA tonight, when he squares off with another ex-UFC legend in Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170 tonight. The event at The Forum in Inglewood, California is live on Spike TV, and will see Sonnen make his first appearance inside the octagon since his 2013 loss to Rashad Evans.

One way to honor Ortiz’s legend  is to enlist MMA’s premier referee, ‘Big John’. California State Athletic Commission executive commissioner Andy Foster confirmed recently that ref McCarthy will stand with Ortiz and Sonnen in the octagon. Bellator 170’s main will certainly be in good hands.

Ortiz will end his career at Bellator 170. The “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has a a 2-1 record in Bellator since leaving the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in 2012. The legend of the cage will look to finish his career in style in his home state (California).

Regardless to the result, the world of MMA will surely unite to give a true pioneer of the fight game a deserved send off.
