Bellator MMA alum, Ian Coughlan has revealed how a once-planned procedure in Germany to improve his quality of life after suffering a freak accident in mixed martial arts training which left him paralyzed, has now been cancelled upon advice received from Irish doctors, who claimed the procedure would likely fail to work.

Back in July of last year, Ian Coughlan, 30, a practitioner of Shaolin MMA in Dublin, was involved in a training room incident, where he was left paralyzed due to a freak accident during a session.

Ian Coughlan competed under the Bellator MMA banner back in 2019

Competing twice as a professional under both the Clan Wars and Bellator MMA banner, Coughlan debuted with an armbar victory over Maciek Gierszewski, before dropping a unanimous decision loss to Constantin Gnusariov.

Severe MMA reporter, Andy Stevenson provided an update on the health of Coughlan following a recent interview with the 30-year-old, detailing his attempt to undergo a procedure in Germany, before eventually electing against undergoing the procedure in a last ditch attempt to potentially regain mobility.

“Ian Coughlan – the #IrishMMA fighter who was paralysed last year – has spent the past 15 months in hospitals and care homes,” Stevenson tweeted. “Ian spoke to me last week about his struggles. He needs out help to get him home.”

“Ian and his wife, with the generosity of others, purchased a cottage for them to live in, but the unexpected scale of renovation costs to make it wheelchair accessible are the barrier to finally getting Ian home,” Stevenson tweeted. “Ian speaks about all of that and more.”

Sharing an update on his journey following the accident, Coughlan revealed how he a plan in his mind to take his own live if treatment and a planned procedure in Germany was to fail, before turning to Irish doctor’s who advised him against undergoing the €73,000 operation.

“It was only for my family that I made that decision, like, to be honest with you, without getting too melodramatic or too dark, everyone who told me it (the procedure) won’t work, I literally said to them, if it doesn’t work, I’m going to kill myself anyway,” Ian Coughlan told Severe MMA. “So that was my attitude – that’s the level of – that’s how low I was. I literally said, if it doesn’t work, I’m going to kill myself, so I might as well give it a try. But you realise that you’ve got a family at home that rely on you. And that changes everything.”

Fabian Edwards, the #2 ranked middleweight contender under the Bellator MMA banner and brother of undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards maintains his undefeated record this year under the scrutiny of Scott Coker — handing Charlie Ward, the teammate of former two-weight UFC best, Conor McGregor a unanimous decision loss.

Co-headlining Bellator 287 in Milan, Italy — Fabian Edwards, a staple of Team Renagade BJJ & MMA in Birmingham, got off to a bright start against Straight Blast Gym product, Ward, rocking the UFC alum with a massive left high kick — reminiscent of a high kick his brother Leon landed to defeat Kamaru Usman earlier this summer.

Stunning the always-competitive Ward with a series of elbows in a tight exchange, Edwards shared some unpleasantries with Portlaoise native, Ward on the ground in the final minute of the last round, as the latter accused Edwards of holding onto a decision win — as he failed to land another finish off the back of an earlier year knockout win over former UFC light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida.

Less than happy with his performance against Ward, Edwards, who had likely earned himself a middleweight title shot against division kingpin, Johnny Elben next, distanced himself from a fight — focusing on a self-labelled lacklustre display.

Below, catch the highlights from Fabian Edwards’ decision win over Charlie Ward

Anthony Johnson

Anthony Johnson’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has provided a concerning update for the former UFC star as he continues to battle health complications.

Johnson was originally slated to fight at Bellator 268 in 2021 but was forced to withdraw from his scheduled matchup due to an undisclosed illness. Anthony Johnson’s most recent outing before this cancellation saw him defeat Jose Augusto Azevedo Barros via second-round knockout at Bellator 258.

It has been just over a year since ‘Rumble’ was scheduled to return, and it appears that unfortunately his health complications still have not been resolved. Ali Abdelaziz recently spoke to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto to provide an update on the former UFC title challenger.

“‘Rumble,’ he’s going through some health problems right now. Very sad. I want everybody to pray for him. Pray for Anthony, he’s not doing well. He’s very strong, spiritually, but pray for him,” Abdelaziz said.

Abdelaziz would also go on to show his appreciation for Bellator and Scott Coker for the support they have provided to Johnson throughout his struggle.

“I want to give a shoutout to Bellator, Scott Coker… They’ve been supporting him. You could not imagine how much support they’re giving them.

“Anthony, be strong. A lot of people love you. He’s going to be okay, but he’s not doing well.” (Transcribed by BloodyElbow)

Anthony Johnson’s Competitive Future in Doubt Following Health Update

Johnson had a successful time whilst competing in the UFC despite never acquiring a championship belt. The 38-year-old holds victories over UFC veterans such as Alexander Gustafsson and Ryan Bader. The former light-heavyweight contender also secured his final victory in the promotion with a brutal thirteen-second knockout of the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Glover Teixeira.

‘Rumble’ has only been able to make a singular appearance since signing with Bellator and given his age and current health status, there is a possibility that this could have been his final appearance inside of an octagon. Hopefully, we will be able to see Johnson return to competition once his current situation improves.

Should he return, who would you like to see Anthony Johnson match up against next?

Professional wrestling icon, Olympic wrestler, and WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) Hall of Fame inductee, Kurt Angle has revealed the reasoning why a potential professional mixed martial arts debut and fight against former UFC contender and WWE alum, Ken Shamrock failed to materialize under the Bellator MMA banner.

Most recently featuring in the main event of Bellator 149 back in 2016, Shamrock, who featured at UFC 1 back in 1993, suffered an eventual third round TKO loss against Royce Gracie – seeing his record drop to 28-17-2 as a professional.

Kurt Angle has been plagued by constant neck injuries throughout his career

Linked with a potential sanctioned fight against professional wrestling star and fellow veteran, Angle, the bout failed to ever come to fruition for the duo – with Angle now revealing a slew of high-profile and well-documented neck injuries prevented him from competing.

“There was no way I was able to do it,” Kurt Angle said on The Kurt Angle Show. “I had no strength in my upper body. If you remember my thing with Daniel Puder, I couldn’t do three push-ups at that particular time. Dan caught me in an armbar – I was in trouble, if he would have kept going, if he wouldn’t have pinned himself, I would have ended up breaking my arm.”

“I was losing circulation to my arms,” Kurt Angle explained. “So my arms got weaker – and got smaller, and I couldn’t do anything, I couldn’t bench 135 pounds, I was weak. My upper body was so weak.”

Angle further explained that during an exchange with Shamrock, he informed the Pancrase veteran that he would “have to take it easy” if he was to ever compete against him in a professional mixed martial arts setting.

“I said, ‘Listen, I am not in any position to fight right now – dont’t get me wrong,” Angle explained. “I can still take you down.’”

“Ken said, ‘Don’t worry, I’ll take it easy on you,’” Angle revealed. (Transcribed by Wrestling Inc)

Dada 5000

Bellator MMA heavyweight alum and former bareknuckle boxing star, Dada 5000 – otherwise known as Dhafir Harris, is set for his first outing in combat sports since February 2016, as he returns as his own founded promotion, BYB Extreme on November 19. In Tampa, Florida – featuring against Matthew Strickland.

Dada 5000, 45, a native of Cat Island in the Bahamas, most notably competed against the late UFC heavyweight veteran, Kimbo Slice at Bellator 149 in 2016, suffering an initial third round TKO loss to Slice, before the result was overturned to an official ‘No Contest’ after Slice tested positive for elevated levels of T/E, and the banned substance, nandrolone.

Collapsing in the third round of his 2016 fight with Slice, Dada 5000 was removed from the cage via stretcher and transported to a nearby medical facility, where he was treated after suffering cardiac arrrest, and kidney failure, as well as severe dehydration in his fight with the late, Slice. Harris has yet to compete since that event.

Founding bare knuckle fighting promotion, BYB Extreme in April 2019, with the promotion fielding the self-proclaimed smalled arena in combat sports in the form of a “trigon” – a cage containing just three sides.

Dada 5000 books a November 19. combat sports comeback

Set to compete under his own promotional banner as per a report from MMA Mania, Dada 500 will return to combat sports on November 19. at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, taking on the above-mentioned, Strickland.

“I have a lot left inside of me and can be a breath of fresh air to what has become a very stale fight game,” Dada 5000 said ahead of his return. “I’m one of the last of that original breed of modern mixed martial artists. I’m recognizable and people identify with what they are familiar with. I want to do this for the fans as much as for myself.”

“I work out 2-3 hours a day in the gym, can bench press 225 pounds 30 times with ease, and I can go out and run a 4.4-4.5 40-yard dash,” He said. “Most importantly, my body hasn’t taken the bumps a lot of fighters my size and age have. I have low miles and with little damage.”
