UFC legend and two-time champion BJ Penn has his next fight lined up, and it’s going to be against a top prospect. Penn was supposed to make his big MMA return at UFC Fight Night 97 in October against Ricardo Lamas. However, Penn has suffered an injury in training and pulled out of the bout and caused the event to be canceled.
Penn will now fight Yair Rodriguez in the main event of the UFC Fight Night Phoenix event in January in a featherweight bout.
Penn will compete for the first time since July 2014. Penn is no doubt an MMA legend as he has won UFC titles in multiple divisions and he won his fight title in 2004 as a welterweight. He won the lightweight title in 2008. He holds a pro-MMA record of 16-10-2 record coming into the fight. Rodriguez, on the other hand, is on a seven fight winning streak and holds a 9-1 pro-MMA record. He has earned Fight of the Night or Performance of the Night bonuses in three of his last four bouts.
The event takes place on Sunday, January 15th at the talking Stick Resort Arena, which marks the first time that the UFC has held an event in the city since 2013. Tickets go on sale next month, and the main card will air on FOX Sports 1.

As with many other sports, mixed martial arts has always had its fair share of cheaters who will try to get away with using performance-enhancing drugs in the hopes of gaining a competitive advantage in the cage.
However, when it comes to making up excuses for why they’ve failed a drug test, it’s fair to say that MMA fighters truly are in a league of their own.
As you’ll discover in the pages that follow, in MMA no excuse is too flimsy, too far-fetched, or frankly just too downright embarrassing not to be used in an attempt to convince people that this is all just a big mistake and their bulging biceps, limitless cardio and superhuman powers of recovery have nothing to do with a cocktail of illegal drugs surging through their system.
Anderson Silva
The mixed martial arts world was rocked in 2015 by the news that arguably the greatest fighter of all time, Anderson Silva had tested positive for two anabolic steroids.
Silva was quick to protest his innocence, declaring that, “I always played clean, I was never a cheater,” and vowed to clear his name.
We all wanted to believe him, and several months his team confidently declared that he would be cleared at an upcoming Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing.
MMA fans waited with baited breath in the hope that this had all just been a big misunderstanding, only to discover that the best his legal team could come up with was that he’d unwittingly taken a tainted love potion.
The ludicrous story that unfolded during the hearing was that Silva had been given this mysterious sexual enhancement medication (originating from Thailand and housed in an unlabeled blue vial) by a friend, and had consumed it for three months prior to his fight without ever stopping to question whether it was above board or not.
If that wasn’t comical enough, an ingenious fan managed to hack into NSAC’s speakerphone system during the hearing and played hits including, Salt N Pepa’s – ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’, 2 live Crew’s – ‘Me So Horny,’ and Shaggy’s – ‘It Wasn’t Me’, which had even the commissioners struggling to stifle their laughter.
Needless to say NSAC didn’t believe a word of his defense, and Silva would be hit with a one year suspension as well as a $360,000 fine.

Penn was scheduled to headline the UFC’s return to the Philippinnes against Ricardo Lamas until a number of issues forced the promotion to cancel the entire event.
There is no word yet regarding if and/or when BJ Penn will make his Octagon return.

MMA Fighting‘s Shaun Al-Shatti gives a transcription:
For the past six months, there’s a fighter that I’ve been wanting to fight: BJ Penn. When the BJ Penn (vs. Ricardo) Lamas fight was announced, I thought I missed my chance. But, then I heard that BJ Penn had a rib injury, so I kind of felt like maybe it was an opportunity for me. It would be great timing if BJ Penn and I were ready to come back at the same time.
While Jung may not be a household name at this point, he is one of the most universally beloved fighters among fans of the sport. A longtime featherweight contender, Jung became an overnight star at WEC 48 by putting on the 2010 Fight of the Year alongside Leonard Garcia.
He made his way to the UFC in 2011 with a rematch against Garcia and won that bout (and 2011 Submission of the Year honors) with his now-signature twister submission. From there, he cemented himself as one of the best action fighters in the history of the sport by tying the UFC record for fastest win with a seven-second knockout of Mark Hominick at UFC 140 and earning the award for 2012 Fight of the Year by defeating Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel TV 3.
Unfortunately, while he was as exciting as can be in the cage, he suffered numerous devastating injuries out of competition.
He was forced to take a year off following his bout with Poirier due to injuries and would be forced to take another year off after his 2013 bout with Jose Aldo. He was set to return at UFC Fight Night 53 opposite AkiraCorassani in 2014, but he was forced to withdraw from the fight due to another injury, which was followed by his taking an indefinite leave from the sport to fulfill his mandatory service in the South Korean military.
Three years removed from his last fight, Jung will enter the cage a different man from when he left. “I’m moving from my twenties to my thirties, from a youth to an old man,” he said. “I became a father. A lot of things have changed, so things seem very new to me. It feels like it’s a new beginning.”
While a Jung vs. Penn matchup makes a fair bit of sense, no details are set regarding The Korean Zombie’s return. Hopefully an announcement will come soon.
The last time we saw Chan Sung Jung, “The Korean Zombie” as many prefer to call him, he was living up to his nickname as he tried to keep his arm from falling off during his bout with Jose Aldo. It was a true testament to his resolve and toughness that he was trying to pop his shoulder back into place in the middle of a fight. It’s that kind of grit that has had fans salivating for the return of The Korean Zombie for over thee years now. Well, good news is his military leave is up and he’s already been making the preparations for his return to the octagon. Jung also has an idea of who exactly he’d like to beat up upon his return.

The legend BJ Penn.
While many people, including myself, think that BJ Penn has nothing more to prove and should walk off into the sunset, there are a great many who are curious as to what the former lightweight and welterweight champion has left in the tank. His move to Jackson-Winklejohn MMA was a bit of a surprise, but one that could potential prove to be fruitful in the long run.
Chan Sung Jung has his sights set on Penn and seems to be pretty excited to not only do battle with a legend, but to return to action after sitting on the sidelines for so long. Check out the video update below as Chan Sung Jung readies himself for a return to battle.
If the fight were to happen, do you think The Korean Zombie has what it takes to beat down BJ Penn or would the veteran spoil Chan Sung Jung’s return?
