Paulie Malignaggi responded to Chael Sonnen and Ben Askren’s criticism of him by challenging them to take up the sport of boxing.

Malignaggi was outpointed by Artem Lobov when the two met in bare knuckle action earlier this month. For his part, Malignaggi claimed to have broken his hand but believed he was still deserving of the decision. Others felt he was underwhelming and should have put Lobov away considering he was a former boxing champion.

Two prominent figures to have commented on his performance were Sonnen and Askren, with the latter even questioning how good boxers really were if Malignaggi was capable of losing to Lobov. This drew a response from the New Yorker:

“Literally, if you listen to any of their analysis, you got Chael Sonnen talking about how boxing is not a sport, this guy just walked in and beat me,” Malignaggi said recently (via MMA News). “Chael, cuz, you not that old, bro. Go and do it. Go and do it, bro. Go and do it. Go fight any light heavyweight in the world.

“Ben Askren, the same sh*t. I did it with one hand. I did it with half a hand. And I did it bare knuckle. Go and do it. Go put on gloves if it’s not that hard. Because you know we make more than you guys. You know we get paid more than you. You know that already. So come in. Come and do it, cuz! It’s that easy? Go make your money!”

Do you think Sonnen and Askren’s criticism was warranted? Or are they being too harsh on Malignaggi and the sport of boxing?

Boxing unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez is reportedly looking at conquering another division with a potential move to light heavyweight.

Alvarez is already a champion in three divisions, having defeated Rocky Fielding last year to become the WBA (regular) super-middleweight champion. He most recently added the IBF middleweight title to his collection following his win over Daniel Jacobs last month.

It looked like the Mexican was then slated to face former champion Gennady Golovkin in a trilogy fight for September. However, that doesn’t seem to be the plan anymore as Alvarez and his team prefer to face WBA (super) super-middleweight champion Callum Smith or WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev according to The Athletic’s Mike Coppinger.

This was followed by a report from Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, stating although there is no offer at the moment, Alvarez is “zeroed” in on a potential fight with Kovalev.

Kovalev long reigned over the light heavyweight division until suffering back-to-back defeats to Andre Ward in 2016 and 2017. He has since suffered a TKO defeat to Eleider Alvarez last year, but bounced back with a unanimous decision win in their rematch earlier this year.

Do you want to see this fight happen next? Or with Callum Smith? Or would you prefer to see Alvarez and Golovkin run things back a third time?

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos plans on calling out boxing WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder if he gets past Francis Ngannou this weekend.

Ngannou is a man who believes he himself could have a career in the boxing ring. “The Predator” possesses some of the most fierce punching power in combat sports today. “Cigano” has a tall order against the Frenchman this weekend in the main event of UFC Minneapolis Saturday night (June 29, 2019) from the Target Center.

Speaking to MMA Fighting, however, dos Santos claims that if he bests Ngannou this weekend, he wants to call out Wilder:

“Back when I was the champion in 2012, I challenged Wladimir Klitschko, he was the champion at that time, and I said I would beat Wladimir Klitschko in a boxing match but of course I’m not a good promoter like Conor McGregor and he got the fight against [Floyd] Mayweather,” dos Santos said.

“Klitschko actually replied to me, he said anytime, anywhere, something like that. But then I lost my belt, I lost the fight to Velasquez and I lost the belt so it didn’t make much sense anymore to promote that fight.

“Now my biggest goal is to go back, fight for the title in the UFC, take the belt back and then start promoting a fight against one of the boxing champions.”

Wilder is currently awaiting an official date and venue for his planned fight with Luis Ortiz. If he can maintain his undefeated record and get past the heavy-hitting Cuban, he’ll meet Tyson Fury in early 2020.

It’s hard to believe Wilder would put those plans on ice to meet dos Santos in the ring. However, dos Santos is confident the fight can happen given Wilder is reluctant to turn down any challenger:

“I think and I already have this idea in my mind who it could be. It could be Deontay Wilder because everything I see about Deontay, he’s a great champion, he knocks everybody out and he doesn’t run away from a good match,” dos Santos said. “He accepts all the matches. Some of the guys pick fights but this guy is not picking fights.

“He’s fighting everybody. So I think if we have a good match and we are able to make people want to see that fight and there’s a chance it could happen. I’ve been watching him for a long time. I actually admire him. His boxing skills are different but I think that’s the perfect match for me.

“I can see many, many holes in his game. Can you imagine I’m not worrying about no takedowns, no kicks, no jiu-jitsu, only boxing. That would be paradise for me.”
