The trash talk continues…

Since late 2015, combat sports superstars Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather have been locking horns. During a brief period after McGregor’s first fight with Nate Diaz, a boxing match with Mayweather was apparently happening in September. Once McGregor beat Diaz in the rematch at UFC 202, it was off to lightweight in New York. The talk about a boxing match with ‘Money’ would cease, but only to reignite again after ‘The Notorious’ beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight strap.

Bad enough was the situation at featherweight that McGregor was stripped of the belt. Although he still claims to be the two-weight champion, McGregor’s reign at featherweight ended with no defenses registered. The back-and-forth with Mayweather would again prove popular in the media, but set the lightweight division at unease. Would McGregor now hold up another division by pursuing his pugilistic rivalry with Mayweather?

Social Media Rounds

More than anything, it appears the McGregor vs. Mayweather rivalry probably won’t go past a social media war. What’s disguised as a genuine rivalry is far more likely to do with followers and money. All that said, McGregor responded to Mayweather’s recent $10K reward video with the following Tweet:

WhiteMcGregorHappy

White Russian

With UFC president Dana White recently hinting at McGregor vs. Khabib in Russia, the Irishman’s immediate future is likely to take place in a UFC octagon. Undoubtedly the biggest draw in the promotion’s history, how far will McGregor’s stardom take him? With movie roles and many other lines of work available to him, the brash striker looks to have his employers by the horns.

Here’s Stockton’s own Nate Diaz to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year! Thanks for sticking with us at LowKick throughout 2016, and we look forward to another crazy year of MMA action in 2017!

With Conor McGregor now having made UFC history by with his UFC 205 lightweight title victory over Eddie Alvarez, becoming the first fighter in promotion history to hold two titles at once, a potential big-money boxing match between the heavy-handed Irishman and boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. has never been bigger.

The rumors of the potential super-fight between the two brash stars first caught wind when McGregor abruptly announced his ‘retirement’ from mixed martial arts (MMA) competition after being removed from the massive UFC 200 card this past Summer. Mayweather would then announce that he was interested in a boxing match with the UFC star, and admitted he was trying to make the fight happen.

Mayweather has been retired from in-ring competition after racking up a legendary undefeated record of 49-0, after a unanimous decision win over Andre Berto in September of last year. ‘Money’ has since stated that he would only consider coming out of retirement for a boxing fight with McGregor to reach 50-0.

Now with McGregor having obtained a boxing license in the state of California earlier this week, the rumor mill is once again beginning to pick up heat with talk of a boxing match between the two combat sports stars. Popular sportsbook Bovada has released their betting odds for the potential bout, with Mayweather leading as a massive favorite over ‘The Notorious One’:

Floyd Mayweather -2250

Conor McGregor +950

If the colossal boxing bout does in fact come to fruition, who are you putting your money on between the two mega-stars?

After a historic victory at this past weekend’s (Nov. 12, 2016) UFC 205, Conor McGregor has a plethora of options awaiting him, and one of the most often talked about, yet least likely options is a potential boxing match between McGregor and retired all-time great Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Apparently some are also comparing the Irish superstar to Mayweather, a comparison “Money” isn’t too pleased with. In fact, the former pound-for-pound king recently spoke on the topic with TMZ Sports:

“I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated, or that he had reigned in MMA for 20 years undefeated, and was world champion in five different weight divisions,” Mayweather said. “That’s something I didn’t know, so I guess you guys are telling me something new. If you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out. Have you ever made $300 million in one night? Have You Ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night?”

McGregor did indeed win his second title in a second weight class last weekend with a brutal second round knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez, but “Money” simply feels as if the “Notorious” one shouldn’t be compared to him:

“I’m a legend, a living legend. I gave to the sport of boxing years and years of hard work. It was blood, sweat and tears, I had a tremendous team, a tremendous run. I think it’s time for Conor McGregor to do what he do, but never compare Conor McGregor to me, that’s total disrespect. I’m an elephant and elephants don’t beef with ants. Elephant is so large he don’t even see ants.”

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir was flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation last March, and he requested his release from the promotion quickly thereafter, although that has yet to happen. Mir, however, has made it clear that his time inside the Octagon has come to an end.

After his Absolute Championship Berkut Fights commentary debut this past weekend, Mir said that he’s still trying to get out of his UFC contract:

“I am [still under contract],” he said (MMAMania.com). “But, I am trying to get out of it. They are not going to utilize me as a fighter and I am not getting any younger. And even if they do not let me go after my suspension, I’m up and I am able to fight again. I really would like to step outside.”

While his mixed martial arts career may be done, Mir’s fighting career may not. The ex-champion said that he’s interested in doing five boxing matches and five K-1 kickboxing matches before he retires for good, but he claims that the UFC is holding him back:

“I have never got to do kickboxing matches,” said Mir. “I have only fought an amateur boxing match. I want to do a professional boxing match. You know, I always wanted to test myself and find out different things. And UFC wants to protect me like any other fighter under the contract.… They have already made a lot of money, they are very famous, very important and I am very grateful for what they helped me accomplish.”

“I am being limited in what I am going to be able to do before I enter into full coaching. I want more experience in different aspects of the sport. My goal is to do at least five K-1-rule kickboxing matches, five professional boxing matches before I retire.”

In addition to that, Mir, one of the very best submission artists in the history of the heavyweight division, expressed his interest in competing in combat sambo:

“Even the combat sambo, I like watching it and I would be interested in entering the tournament. However, the UFC limits it because they do not want me to go out and take adventures.”

Stay tuned to LowKickMMA as more news unfolds on Mir’s future.

WBA Orders Gennady Golovkin To Face Daniel Jacobs Next

Middleweight destroyer and reigning IBO, IBF, WBC, and WBA champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin continued his frightening knockout streak with a fifth round stoppage of IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook this past weekend (September 10, 2015) from The O2 Arena in London, England.

In the aftermath of the bout, Golovkin made it clear what he wants next: a bout against WBO 160-pound titleholder Billy Joe Saunders. By fighting Saunders, Golovkin hopes to capture the lone middleweight title that has avoided him up until this point.

Despite his wishes, however, Golovkin may have another fight on his hands as the WBA has ordered him to take on mandatory challenger Daniel Jacobs according to a report from Sherdog. The WBA has said that the two men must square off within 120 days. The sanctioning body also made it clear that the 30 day negotiation period has begun and if an agreement cannot be made, the fight will go to a purse bid.

Jacobs, the reigning WBA ‘regular’ middleweight champion, recently competed as well, stopping Sergio Mora in the seventh round of their September 9, 2016 bout. Jacobs currently holds a professional record of 32-1.

The bout undoubtedly makes sense given the fact that Jacobs is the ‘regular’ champion and Golovkin is the ‘super’ champion, although it may not happen in the near future. GGG appears to be solely focused on capturing ‘all of the belts’ as he’s so often stated, and after he attempts to do so, he’ll likely be gunning for a blockbuster showdown with Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, which will hopefully take place in 2017.

Who would you like to see Golovkin meet next?

There was a tremendous amount of hype heading into August 20’s bad blood filled rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor, and it lived up to expectations for sure, as the two men slugged it out for five rounds in the main event of UFC 202. In the end, McGregor evened the score, and walked away with a majority decision victory. Due to the results of the latest installment of the series, the two will almost certainly be headed for a trilogy bout at some point in the future.

Because of the circumstances surrounding the rivalry, and because of the excitement of the rematch, FOX Sports 1 personality Collin Cowhered recently labeled McGregor vs. Diaz as MMA’s Ali vs. Frazier:

“I saw something on Saturday night, in a sport which many of you will never embrace,” Cowherd said in the recent episode of his podcast “The Herd.” “But to me, it is the new standard for ritual drama, McGregor-Diaz. It is our Ali-Frazier.”

“Where during the fight and immediately afterwards, peers, other sports stars were in awe, like Ali-Frazier.”

Since its inception, mixed martial arts has always been compared to boxing, a ‘dying’ sport in the eyes of some, but comparing a battle to that of the iconic Ali vs. Frazier fights is something else. In fact, Cowherd went as far to say that Diaz vs. McGregor II was the ‘final nail in the coffin’ of boxing:

“There are four or five things in my life, big businesses that have died. DVDs, newspapers, landline phones. And Saturday night by 9:30 Pacific, boxing died. That was the final nail in the coffin. Boxing’s dead.”
