UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has finally addressed the wild rumors of a potential matchup with boxing legend Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Rumors emerged this week that the UFC superstar could possibly step inside the boxing ring to challenge the recently retired Mayweather in a pivotal super fight.

Mayweather’s father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., addressed these rumors first, stating that his son spoke of possibly coming out of retirement to face ‘some MMA fighter’. Mayweather Jr. himself confirmed these rumors as well, stating a bout with McGregor is ‘possible’.

UFC President Dana White, however, is not a fan of these recent rumblings. When asked about the rumors, White stated that they were “completely fiction, this is like bottom-feeder … stuff.”.

One man we had yet to hear from was Mayweather’s rumored opponent, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Until now that is.

McGregor took to Twitter to add speculation to the rumors by posting the following:

While McGregor has not officially responded to these rumors, this picture can indicate ‘Notorious’ is aware of the rumors and will defiantly stir the pot if it means keeping his name in the headlines.

Mayweather (49-0, Boxing) is coming off of a unanimous decision win, in what was said to be his final bout inside the ring, to Andre Berto back in September.

McGregor (19-3, MMA) comes off a submission loss, his first under the UFC banner, to Stockton native Nate Diaz in early March.

While McGregor holds amateur experience from his youth in boxing, the Irishman certainly will be out of his element in a boxing match with a such a high-caliber defensive boxer as Mayweather.

No official confirmation has yet been made on the potential boxing bout.

Joe Rogan: UFC Fighters Shouldn’t Wear Gloves

The debate about gloves in the UFC has been going on a while now, but not so much whether or not they should be worn, rather if they could be improved to prevent fouls. The problem with the current style of glove is that the finger tips are free to do damage when the hand is open. This often results in eye pokes or scratches that not only cause breaks in the action, but are highly dangerous to the fighter’s health and safety. Vision problems can easily cost a fighter their career, and so thinking on a method of improving these gloves has been a constant effort, although to no avail as of yet.

Another and rather obvious safety feature in relation to gloves is not only for the person receiving the blow, but the one dishing out the punches. For the fighter who is throwing strikes, broken bones in the hand are a frequent hazard. But for Joe Rogan, it’s an unrealistic amount of protection for a fighter to have.

JoeRogan600x400

Making the oft referenced comparison between MMA and boxing during his most recent podcast, and also highlighting recent events, Rogan gives his opinion on fighter safety and more specifically whether MMA fighters should wear gloves or not:

“It’s much more rare that boxers break their hands compared to MMA fighters. I think MMA fighters have an unrealistic amount of protection on their hands, and it’s just for their own protection really. I got interviewed recently when that guy did overseas, and was asked if I thought MMA fighters should have bigger gloves or head gear. I think the real answer is no gloves and no wrist taping. The thing is when you punch you have to try really hard to keep your wrist straight, and you have to hit with the first two knuckles. Reckless punching would go away.”

You know the old adage that professional athletes are considered by many people to be heroes and role models?

Well, boxing champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley just gave that notion a dose of credibility.

On Sunday night (May 1, 2016) Mosley was moseying (couldn’t help myself) down the 405 in Los Angeles with his family in tow, when they witnessed firsthand a massive four car pileup just feet away from their own vehicle.

Luckily for the unconscious man who Mosley spotted in one of the cars involved, “Sugar Shane” had very sharply honed his reactionary instincts over his 20-plus year, three-division world title-winning career, and sprinted immediately over to the man’s severely damaged vehicle.

Noticing that a baby was trapped in a car seat, Mosley sprung to action, carefully removing the baby from the wreck and waiting for paramedics to arrive on the scene and escort them to the hospital:

“You don’t know if the car is going to catch fire, what’s going to happen, then seeing there’s a baby in therehe [the baby] was crying and bleeding, his neck was bruised.”

Mosley and his girlfriend then followed the man and his baby to a nearby hospital to make sure that everything was OK, and thankfully all was well, save for a few minor injuries.

“He [the father] was crying and saying, ‘you guys are like an angel, and thank you for helping me. And being there for me and protecting my son’”.

Then, staying true to his reputation as one of the true class acts in boxing, “Sugar” gave the man two tickets to his upcoming May 28 fight against David Avanesyan in Arizona; a fairytale ending to a nightmare situation.

Is UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor the most hated/loved man in the sport?

It’s a strange question when you think about it, as most fighters or even sports personalities in general are either one or the other for the most part. Of course every UFC star who has ever been in the limelight has detractors, it’s just part of the game, but ‘The Notorious’ has such a huge fan base and people who seem to despise him in hoards. So much of each in fact, that you could split them down the middle and come to the conclusion that he’s potentially the most loved and also hated fighter in modern combat sports.

Conor McGregor..

So what is it about the Irish superstar that gets people so besotted or angry? Well, his brash attitude is open to interpretation, some see it as a smear on the sport, whereas others love the entertainment factor that his outspoken style brings to the game. His performances are key in his popularity, but perhaps his brazen fighting style is not what the purists are interested in. Either way, love him or hate him, McGregor has engulfed the sport of mixed martial arts right now.

After losing to Nate Diaz at UFC 196, the sects of fans that have been waging war on Conor McGregor since day one were finally given their chance to kick the man while he was down. Unfortunately for the, ‘The Notorious’ was humble in defeat, and extrovertly unaffected on the most part. Unlike Ronda Rousey before him, McGregor remained focused on his goal while the MMA world eagerly awaited his next move.

Rematch with Diaz

The second fight between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz will go down at UFC 200. The blockbuster July 9 card will serve as the second major milestone event, and is forecast to shatter all previous pay-per-view records. UFC 100 currently holds the title of numbers boss, and featured a star studded line up with Georges St-Pierre vs. Thiago Alves, Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir 2 and many more.

A loss for McGregor would perhaps not be as costly as imagined given the fact it’s once again at welterweight, and his featherweight title will remain intact for the moment. Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar will duke it out for the interim title on the same card as McGregor/Diaz 2, much to the dislike of many fans of MMA.

One man who has given huge insight in to his own fighting life recently, and is a well known fan of mixed martial arts, is former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson. He was asked what he thought about Conor McGregor in this recent interview, you should check it out…

Although nothing has been officially confirmed just yet, it’s been widely assumed that reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor will rematch Nate Diaz in a welterweight bout at July 9’s UFC 200.

The two men infamously faced off at March 5’s UFC 196 with McGregor shockingly losing by way of submission in a fight two whole weight classes above his usual home at 145-pounds.

While many have criticized the “Notorious” one in the aftermath of the bout, boxer Andre Berto, who has apparently become friends with McGregor, claims that the Irishman is all for the rematch:

“I talked to him actually like three days ago. He’s doing all right,” Berto told TMZ. “Of course, a lot of situations that he feels played a part on why he lost. I know him and he’s hungry to get back, and I think he wants to try to get his rematch in.”

But is that the right choice?

Berto feels as if McGregor should jump back down in weight, defend his title, and take a fight or two before a rematch with the Stockton Bad Boy occurs:

“I think he should probably take another fight or two first. I think he should go back down (in weight),” Berto explained. “Conor’s the type of guy, I think he’s a lot more effective when he’s disciplined. When he’s cutting weight, when he’s staying on his diet, things like that, it just does something to the mind of a fighter and I think he’s the type of fighter that responds to it.”

In fact, Berto feels as if the move up in weight produced a less focused “Notorious” one:

“When you give a guy like that, he already has tons of fame, tons of money and now he doesn’t have to make weight for a fight.”

Despite McGregor’s recent loss, however, the former champion feels as if the “Notorious” one will come back better than ever:

“I think he’s going to come back better,” Berto said. “I think it’s going to be a bigger situation when he comes back.”

If he does end up squaring off with Diaz again, what do you expect from McGregor in the rematch?

VIDEO: Fabio Maldonado Returns to Boxing, Wrecks Opponent With First Punch

(“Ok guys, I want a clean, fair fight…you know what, let’s just go with clean.”)

Former UFC light heavyweight Fabio Maldonado may be best known for his ability to absorb a punch (and then ten thousand punches after that), but in his victories, he’s shown a decent enough ability to throw one as well.

Having been one of eight fighters cut by the UFC back in December following consecutive losses to Rampage Jackson and Corey Anderson, Maldonado recently decided to return to his old stomping grounds inside the squared circle to see if he still had any spark left in those bungalows he likes to throw around. His first fight back in February played out in nearly perfect fashion, with Maldonado defeating Robson Bambu via first round knockout. Emerging from the fight completely unscathed, the Brazilian slugger was booked against 2-7 jobber Alessandro Bernardo in a quick turnaround match last week, and the results were almost identical.

Skip ahead to the 1:50 mark of the above video to check out the full fight, and if you’re really in a hurry, skip ahead another 10 seconds to see Maldonado knock his opponent dead with literally the first punch he throws: a Liddell-esque overhand right.

The win improves Maldonado’s boxing record to a perfect 24-0 with 23 knockouts, suggesting that maybe it’s time he started receiving a step up in competition. As for his MMA career, Maldonado was scheduled to take on Andrew Smith at an XFCI event on March 19th, but that event was later cancelled due to a number of sponsors pulling out. As it stands, Maldonado is expecting to return to MMA on May 6th at Primeiro Round against an opponent TBA.
