There has been a never-ending string of opinions in the wake of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s ill-timed brawl following his UFC 229 main event win over Conor McGregor.

The UFC’s biggest-ever pay-per-view event last Saturday (Oct. 6, 2018) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, was supposed to be ‘The Eagle’s’ crowning achievement. In one way it was, as he submitted former two-division champion McGregor. However, that potentially historic win was marred by his actions shortly thereafter.

Khabib leaped into the crowd to fight McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, inciting a wildfire of violence. Three of Khabib’s teammates then scaled the cage and assaulted the Irish superstar. The bad blood definitely stems from McGregor’s infamous Brooklyn bus attack, and that’s understandable.

However, UFC 229 provided the stoic Khabib with the opportunity to shut McGregor up in the Octagon. He did that. But his normally soft-spoken style was uprooted by his actions. One UFC champion believes Khabib should not have allowed McGregor’s disrespect to change his own actions.

That man is middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. “Bobby Knuckles” sent a well-liked tweet Khabib’s way containing a deep quote about respect:

A Good Point

The 185-pound ruler has a good point. Nurmagomedov spent the majority of the build-up to UFC 229 keeping his mouth shut even though he probably wanted to explode inside.

Khabib accomplished his ultimate goal and dominated McGregor from pillar to post. There was no need to stoop to his level and commit outside-the-cage violence. The commission presiding over UFC 229 is not impressed and admitted that in a recent statement.

Khabib and McGregor will both face a complaint from the NSAC for their parts in the melee. The champion’s situation seems to be a bit more dire as the commission withheld his purse. Dana White doesn’t believe the NSAC should keep his whole $2,000,000 or strip him of the title. Khabib’s punishment is very much up in the air.

He’s soared up the UFC pound-for-pound rankings in the meantime.

“The Notorious” Conor McGregor took a beating in his UFC 229 main event against Khabib Nurmagomedov on Saturday (Oct 6, 2018) night. Then the Irishman’s UFC 229 afterparty had to be canceled due to ‘credible threats’.

McGregor was forced to tap out in the fourth round due to a neck crank. Chaos ensued shortly after when Nurmagomedov hurdled the fence and lept at Dillon Danis, one of Conor’s cornermen.

When things finally calmed down UFC President Dana White addressed the media in the UFC 229 post-fight press conference.

Shortly after the fight, McGregor shared his thoughts on social media, saying Khabib may have won the fight but he lost the war. McGregor’s social media post:

It’s fair to say that McGregor didn’t have a good night. Things continued to go south for the Irishman and his camp after the fight.

Conor was expected to host a lavish afterparty following UFC 229. He had already booked out the Encore Beach Club in Las Vegas. Celebrities like Drake were expected to be in attendance.

As stated earlier the after party was canceled because of ‘credible threats’ to McGregor and his team. Nurmagomeov also did not have an official afterparty.

UFC President Dana White has had his hands full in the wake of the biggest fight in MMA history. Further complicating matters, Conor McGregor has informed White he wants an immediate rematch with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

McGregor suffered the fourth loss of his career on Saturday night (Oct. 6, 2018) at the sold-out T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. After Nurmagomedov submitted McGregor in the fourth round, all hell broke loose. Nurmagomedov lept over the Octagon to attack a member of McGregor’s corner, Dillon Danis.

Following the fight, McGregor wrote on social media he is “looking forward to the rematch.” He also stated that Khabib ‘won the match but lost the battle.’

Angling For A Rematch

White told ESPN’s “First Take” on Monday morning that McGregor has already brought it up to him directly.

“[Nurmagomedov] has to go before the Nevada commission, and we have to see what’s going to happen with Khabib and this whole mess. But Conor McGregor has already called me, wanting a rematch.”

“That’s what Conor has asked for. We’ll see what happens with Khabib and what’s next. Tony Ferguson looked amazing. Those two have been lined up three different times to fight and it hasn’t happened. We’ll see how things play out.”

According to White, several members of Khabib’s entourage were taken into custody by Las Vegas Metro PD. However, McGregor refused to press charges and the men were released from custody.

For his actions, the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has withheld Nurmagomedov’s $2,000,000 disclosed purse pending a full investigation of what took place after the fight in the Octagon.

McGregor was also seen throwing punches at members of Khabib’s corner. However, the NSAC quickly deemed his actions self defense and thus McGregor has since been paid in full for his main event fight.

Khabib’s Fate

Nurmagomedov faces possible fines, community service, a potential suspension for his actions, and his may affect his ability to renew his travel visa.

White said the UFC will allow the NSAC to conduct its hearings before making a decision on Nurmagomedov’s next fight. He also said the UFC took extra precautions to prevent this type of situation, but it was unavoidable.

“We knew some things could happen after this fight. So we had everything in place to make sure that didn’t happen. I didn’t see Khabib jumping over the cage like that. He got over that thing quick and was going after one of Conor’s cornermen.”

“There’s no doubt he’s justified for being upset. But first of all, you, you just won the fight against the biggest superstar in all of sports, let alone our sport. You just beat him while the whole world was watching. … The only one getting hurt in this thing now is Khabib. Now he has to go before the Nevada commission.”

Following last nights (Oct 6, 2018) wild ending to an otherwise spectacular UFC 229 Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has issued a statement regarding the post-fight brawl.

Conor McGregor pulled out all the stops to hype UFC 229’s main event. But the Irishman made it personal when he verbally attacked Khabib’s father, his country, and his manager Abdelaziz).

There are so many moving parts to last nights brawl. McGregor hurling a dolly at a bus full of people. The UFC then using that footage to promote the fight. That promotion could be called questionable.

Footage has emerged today that shows Abdelaziz being in the thick of the chaos outside the cage. Abdelaziz was a big part of the narrative leading up to the fight and thus felt compelled to share his thoughts on the night. (via Instagram):

The ‘Apology’

“I want to congratulate my brother @khabib_nurmagomedov The undisputed, undefeated pound for pound king. There was never 2 Kings from beginning, only one king. This is not the way we want to celebrate such a dominant performance but when you talk about people’s country, family and religion and intentionally try to kill someone like he said and the cornermen running their mouths after, this is the fight game & shit happens.

“The fans got an amazing fight and a great show. I want apologize to the Nevada athletic commission, the governer of Nevada and I want to thank Las Vegas police department and security for doing such an unbelievable job. Now everyone understands who’s the amateur here.”

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has withheld Khabib’s purse from UFC 229. He will likely face a fine and lengthy suspension. His U.S. visa renewal could be impacted and his status as the lightweight champion is not guaranteed.

Much like Khabib’s half-hearted apology at the post-fight press conference, Abdelaziz defers much of the blame to McGregor. It seems everyone is sorry but no one wants to admit fault.

UFC 229 was the biggest and most important event in the sport’s history. The hype was real. The card delivered one of the best rivalries in UFC history as a result. The champion’s career-defining win has been overshadowed.

And that’s just a shame. Was Abdelaziz’s “apology” enough?

Last night’s (Sat., October 6, 2018) UFC 229 is in the books from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. From knockouts to come-from-behind wins, the night lived up to lofty expectations. With so many heart-stopping moments and unexpected fiascos, it’s inevitably going to result in a mix of water cooler talk on Monday morning.

From Conor McGregor tapping out again, to the unbelievable comeback and heart of Derrick Lewis, to the unfortunate brawl after the awaited main event, UFC 229 was just one hell of a night.

Here are LowkickMMA’s eight biggest takeaways from the absolutely out-of-control UFC 229.

Khabib Should Be Arrested And/Or Stripped

By all accounts, UFC 229 was the biggest and most-watched fight card in company history. Yet Khabib Nurmagomedov decided to act a fool.

It’s a shame that such a masterful performance will be marred in controversy. But unfortunately that’s the situation with Khabib, and the sport of MMA finds itself in. What was he thinking as he scaled the cage and dove at Dillon Danis?

UFC President Dana White was noticeably subdued during the post-fight press conference when he explained that he doesn’t know what the future holds for the unbeaten champion. Several media members asked White if Khabib would be stripped of his lightweight title.

White chose his words carefully while addressing Khabib but did reveal that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) is going to most likely slam the Dagestani for this actions on Saturday night.

Making matters worse for Khabib, Nevada’s governor was in attendance for UFC 229. Per White, the governor went running for his life when the brawl broke out. The governor oversees the athletic commission. That can’t bode well for the Dagestani.

Just ‘Cause, Here’s Bob Sapp Getting Into An Embarrassing Press Conference Brawl

(“You feel that breeze? That’s all you’ll need to do to make me quit. BEAST OUT.”)

I might be alone in this, but I was under the impression that Bob Sapp had retired from professional fighting and disappeared off the face of the earth the minute after he was ambushed by Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. As it turns out, Sapp actually emerged from hiding last year and picked up a victory over Akebono in a kickboxing match at Rizin 2. So technically, this means that Bob Sapp has scored more victories in the past year than Anthony Pettis and Renan Barao combined. What a world.

Anyways, it appears that Sapp will be returning to the cage for the first time since 2013 next month, where he’ll face off with Aori “The Heavyweight Supernova” Gele in an openweight MMA bout under the Road FC banner. While promoting the event at a press conference this morning, Sapp nearly came to blows with Gele and forced Hong Man Choi, of all people, to break up the action. I don’t mean to spoil it, but suffice it to say, the UFC 178 media day brawl it was not.

So, yeah. Sapp and Gele will do battle (or something resembling it) at a Road FC 32 on July 2nd. Be there or be…anywhere else, really.
