Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has had a career that has seemed to have been plagued by unfortunate injury setbacks. The Mexican-American lost his title in June 2015 and was forced to withdraw from an immediate rematch with then champion Fabricio Werdum last February due to yet another injury.

At last night’s (July 9, 2016) UFC 200, however, Velasquez returned in vintage form, destroying Travis Browne with a first round TKO victory. Speaking on his performance at the post-fight press conference, Velasquez admitted that he’s changed some things in his training camp that led to healthier outcome:

“I felt like the stuff I’ve done for this training camp as far as keeping my body healthy, I feel like it’s worked for me,” he said after the milestone event. “And to go through a whole training camp without any little tweaks or nothing really bothering me has been awesome. And that’s because of the stuff I’ve done to keep my body healthy.”

Not only heading into the bout healthy, but also seemingly coming out of it unscathed, Velasquez may be ready to fight again in the near future, and it’s pretty clear what he has his eyes set on:

“For me, I just always want to fight the best guys,” Velasquez said. “I want the winner of Stipe and Overeem. That’s what I want.”

Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem will face off in the main event of September 10’s UFC 203 from Cleveland, Ohio with Miocic’s heavyweight title hanging in the balance. Does Velasquez deserve a crack at the winner?

That makes it three consecutive TKO victories for Miocic, and he now has the chance to solidify himself as the true king of the heavyweight division, a division that has been in a bit of a limbo in recent years.

With that being said, however, the division has seemed to be revitalized as of late, and the newly minted champion should have multiple challengers awaiting him.

Let’s take a look at four possible fights for Miocic to take next:

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is gearing up to compete for the first time since surrendering his title to Fabricio Werdum at June 2015’s UFC 188.

Velasquez will take on No. 7-ranked Travis Browne at July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 from Las Vegas in a bout that could very well produce the division’s next title challenger.

After losing his title, Velasquez was scheduled to rematch Werdum last February, but he was forced to withdraw from the contest with yet another injury. Injuries have seemed to be a reoccurring theme for the American Kickboxing Academy product, and one that has earned him his fair share of criticism from fans and media members.

When he shows up to fight, there’s no question that Velasquez is one of the best heavyweights on the planet, but many feel as if he pushes himself too hard in the gym, resulting in constant setbacks.

Browne recently spoke on this topic, saying that Velasquez has a certain type of ‘mentality’ that simply describes who he is as a fighter:

“Cain, whether he’s hurt or not, he’s still one of the most dangerous men in the world. He ran our division for years,” he told FOX Sports.

“The guy, you see it in his fights, he puts it all out there. You have to respect him for that. So, how do you knock him for doing what got him to that spot in the first place? That’s his mentality. That’s him as a fighter, that’s him as a man, you know? How do you demonize that? That’s what got him there.”

In the end, “Hapa” feels as if it was this very style that made Velasquez a star in the first place, making it ‘sad’ that he’s now receiving less than stellar treatment from the fans:

“That’s what made everyone love him as the dominant champ that he is. And now because he is getting injured, people are hating him for it It’s like, what are you guys doing? That’s what got you to love him in the first place.”

“That’s the sad part.”

Do you feel as if Velasquez deserves the criticisms he’s garnered, or are injuries just the nature of the beast which is mixed martial arts?

Cain Velasquez Has No Sympathy For Conor McGregor’s Drama

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is not sympathetic for Conor McGregor in his current situation with the UFC.

In an interview during the recent promotional blitz for UFC 200 (via MMAFighting.com) where he’ll face top contender Travis Browne, Velasquez found himself unable to sympathize with the Irishman’s reluctance to participate in the necessary promotional media obligations for the upcoming UFC 200 colossal event.

“I’m doing it, everybody else is doing it,” he said. “Can I see his side? No, not really. I’m doing it. Everybody else is doing it.

If he had to do way more than what we had to do, OK then, yes. I could definitely see that. But if he’s not, if he’s doing the same thing, then no. We’re all doing it.”

McGregor was recently removed from the UFC 200 card by UFC President Dana White after the Irishman refused to attend the Las Vegas press conference to promote the summer’s monumental event.

McGregor was originally scheduled to rematch Nate Diaz in UFC 200’s main event, but the bout was scrapped and replaced with the highly-anticipated rematch between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones.

Velasquez, who doesn’t enjoy the media aspect of the job either, still believes fighters are obligated to perform these media responsibilities:

“I feel that we all do have obligations to do this kind of stuff,” Velasquez said. “I’m a guy that hates doing this. When I first started to fight, I thought it was just training and fighting and that was it.

‘OK, you’ve gotta do interviews.’ [I was like,] ‘What?’ Doing it now, yeah I’m kind of comfortable with doing it. I can do it pretty easily, I feel like. I feel like it is part of the job. You’ve gotta do this and train and fight.”

While the heavyweight star understands the pressures of the media can take a toll on fighters, Velasquez claims the UFC’s PR department can be a huge help to their athletes:

“I guess it all depends on what you can handle. Some people can do this kind of stuff all day, some people can’t. I understand that. You just talk to whoever is with you. The PR people from the UFC are great. We just talk to them and say, ‘Hey, this is too much.’”

In the end, Velasquez does not seem to care as to whether or not McGregor is allowed to compete on the blockbuster July card this summer. Instead, he’s focused on his upcoming bout against the No.7-ranked Browne:

“Again, that’s not fair to the other fighters I would say, also,” Velasquez said. “But me personally, I don’t care. You came, you didn’t come. If he fights on the card, if he doesn’t, I’m just happy to be back. That’s it.”

A few years back, former two-time UFC champion Cain Velasquez was considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight to have ever competed in mixed martial arts; or he was at least heavily in the discussion.

Fast-forward to 2016, however, and Velasquez is no longer the king of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

A plethora of injuries and an upset loss later and Velasquez finds himself at a crossroads, having only competed once since October 2013.

The former champion is set to face off with No. 7-ranked Travis Browne at July 9’s UFC 200 in a bout that if won, could launch Velasquez back into title contention.

His accomplishments inside of the cage can never be looked down upon, and while anything can happen in the insane sport called MMA, let’s take a look at five reasons why Velasquez will never maintain UFC gold again.

With many calling it a day on his decorated MMA career after a his first-ever TKO loss to Alistair Overeem in December, former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos silenced his critics in a big way when he dominated the streaking “Big” Ben Rothwell in the main event of yesterday’s (Sun., April 10, 2016) UFC Fight Night 86 from the Zagreb Arena in Zagreb, Croatia.

Dos Santos righted the ship in a big way, out-striking Rothwell is every facet of the bout, which was contested entirely on the feet. “Cigano’s” speed, footwork, elusiveness, body work, and accuracy were all on full display, and perhaps most encouraging for his fans was the clear fact that he returned to his confident, boxing-centered style of old after making a recent camp change to Florida’s American Top Team (ATT).

So “JDS” is right back in the title mix in the volatile and shallow heavyweight title picture, and with most of the top fighters booked in big fights right now, dos Santos should have a huge fight coming up once the next wave of bouts is complete. He’s already fought (and beat) both participants of the upcoming main event between champion Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic, so a rematch with either of those top competitors would already have a built-in backstory.

He’s also beat and lost to former champ Cain Velasquez, who will take on Travis Browne at UFC 200, and his latest loss was to Overeem, who meets Andrei Arlovski in the main event of May 8’s UFC Rotterdam. So while the schedule might not feature many fresh faces for “Cigano,” the intriguing match-ups are there for him nonetheless.

Whom do you think he should face in his next bout?
