Jorge Masvidal is very serious about the prospect of facing Canelo Alvarez in a boxing match.

Masvidal emerged victorious over Nate Diaz in their UFC 244 headliner on Saturday night after a dominant performance. The event was so highly-anticipated that Alvarez’s title fight with Sergei Kovalev was delayed until after UFC 244 was over.

Speaking after his win, Masvidal said he would love to face Alvarez in a boxing match. And appearing on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday, he further expanded as to why he think he would do well in the sweet science:

“”I’m dead serious about trying to fight Canelo Alvarez,” Masvidal said. “Give me a nice little change, I’ll take my talents over there. I feel like I can shock the world. Is Canelo a better boxer than me? Has he thrown ten thousands jabs more than me because that’s what he does morning and night, yeah, he’s a better boxer.

“But can I bring some elements that boxers ain’t used to that are in the legal realm of boxing and throw Canelo completely off his game? F*ck yes, man. I’m a natural bigger dude. I punch like a f*cking truck. If I got boxing gloves on, I’m not afraid of breaking my hand because I got that cast on so I’ll be swinging extra harder. I feel like I could be a legitimate a** threat in there. Plus I’m a little longer. In the wake of the Conor-Mayweather fight, showed me a lot of things that they were really bad [at]. They can’t read us as well as maybe they can read a boxer especially in the early insights of the fight.”

That said, “Gamebred” still has tons of respect for Alvarez. The boxing middleweight champion established himself as arguably the pound-for-pound best boxer in the world following his knockout of Kovalev, having moved up to a new weight class in doing so.

But that won’t stop Masvidal from wanting to destroy the Mexican in the ring:

“I’ll be going for the knockout obviously. Nothing else,” Masvidal added. “This is not to disrespect Canelo because I think the dude is a beast. It would be an honor to get in the ring with him.

“But he did say some sh*t like no MMA fights would be a challenge. I beg to differ, my brother. I would really love to be the guy that tried to end his f*cking face, just destroy him.”

What do you think of Masvidal’s comments?

Last night (Sat. November 2, 2019) was huge for combat sports fans. The UFC 244 pay-per-view (PPV) card, arguably the most stacked of the year thus far, took place from Madison Square Garden.

Also, Canelo Alvarez jumped up to light heavyweight to challenge Sergey Kovalev. However, prior to the two shows starting, DAZN announced that they wouldn’t start their Alvarez vs. Kovalev main event until after the UFC 244 main event between Masvidal and Diaz concluded. However, the DAZN card’s co-main event didn’t end until halfway through the UFC 244 co-main event between Darren Till and Kelvin Gastelum.

This would mean a lengthy intermission for both DAZN viewers at home, as well as those live in attendance. So, the MGM Grand called up UFC president Dana White to ask if they could play the Masvidal vs. Diaz fight for its restless crowd. White explained the situation in the UFC 244 post-fight press conference. (H/T Bloody Elbow)

“So we were sitting there, and MGM called and said that. ‘you guys are halfway through your co-main event right now,” White said. “People are losing their minds here,’ or whatever. ‘Can we show the Diaz fight at the MGM?’”

“And I was just like, ‘Holy sh-t! This is crazy! This is getting crazier by the minute!’ I woke up and dreamed all this, that it could happen,” he continued. “It was nuts. And of course, we said yes, and they did and wow.”

White then took the opportunity to take a shot at Golden Boy Promotions promoter and newfound enemy Oscar De La Hoya, who the UFC boss called a “scumbag,” amongst other things.

“They’re not showing my main event at their cards because somebody won and somebody lost,” White said. “It’s a much bigger picture than that. And you guys know how I am or whatever, I f—ng hate Oscar De La Hoya. I hate this guy. He’s a scumbag, he’s a snake. And I’ve told him not to go on this night, he did what he wanted to do, and here we are.

“I respect Canelo, and I respect all the other fighters and the guys who participate in the sport of boxing,” White added. “And we got it worked out yesterday to where fans could see both fights. It’s a crazy, crazy thing for me.”

What do you think about White allowing the MGM Grand to play Masvidal vs. Diaz at Canelo vs. Kovalev?
