Quote: McGregor Could ‘Easily’ Command Canelo-Like Money In Streaming Deal

If Conor McGregor was an independent contractor, he could “easily” demand Canelo-like money from a streaming deal.

Streaming deals for fighters, such as the one boxing middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez recently signed, are changing the game.

Recently, Alvarez signed the biggest contract in sports history – a broadcast deal with the DAZN streaming service. DAZN now has the rights to broadcast the Mexican star’s fights. The streaming service has taken the combat sports world by storm.

They’re affiliated with the likes of Alvarez, English boxing sensation Anthony Joshua, and Bellator MMA. There have even been talks for DAZN to sign former middleweight king Gennady Golovkin. If mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters had similar opportunities to that of boxers, they could stand to make a lot of money.

Take Conor McGregor for example. Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya, who helped land Canelo’s DAZN deal, spoke to Luke Thomas on “The MMA Hour” recently. He said that MMA fighters the caliber of McGregor could make Canelo-like money with a potential streaming deal (via MMA Fighting):

“That’s the beauty of being free agents,” said De La Hoya. “If you have somebody behind you who’s looking out for your best interests individually, absolutely — why not?

“There’s guys out there who are phenomenal, phenomenal fighters. That can have those types of deal. You take a look at Conor McGregor or you take a look at these fighters who are big, household names.

“Imagine if Conor McGregor was an independent contractor. He can easily get a deal like that on a DAZN or an ESPN+. But obviously they’re with UFC and UFC just works differently.”

It looks like the DAZN streaming service could land yet another major boxing star. Ring Magazine’s Mike Coppinger is reporting that Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, is negotiating with the service for GGG’s broadcasting rights before he returns to the ring. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Claims McGregor Was Tougher Fight Than Canelo

Floyd Mayweather believes that Conor McGregor gave him a tougher fight than Canelo Alvarez did inside the squared circle.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has shared the ring with some of the greatest boxers of all time.

Of course, the argument can be made that Mayweather himself is the greatest to ever lace up a pair of gloves. “Money” has racked up an undefeated record of 50-0 inside the squared circle. His milestone 50th consecutive victory came last year against UFC mega-star Conor McGregor.

The entire ordeal was a glorified circus act, in which Mayweather dragged the Irishman into the later rounds, allowing the then-UFC champion to exhaust himself en-route to a 10th round TKO win. Recently, Mayweather has come out and heaped a ton of praise McGregor’s way, all while taking a shot at unified middleweight boxing champion Canelo Alvarez.

In the wake of Alvarez signing a huge new broadcast deal with the DAZN streaming network, Mayweather posted the following on Instagram:

“It didn’t matter if Canelo ate his PED steak or not this night, this was by far the easiest fight of my career! Connor McQuitter was a way better fighter than Canelo’s cheating ass and I beat the brakes off him too!

“It takes me 36 mins or less to make $300 million plus. It literally takes me 1 night and 1 fight to make what you might make in 5 years and 11 fights! So really, who’s still winning? You do the math!”

Canelo recently signed the biggest contract in sports history. A five-year, 11-fight, $365 million broadcast deal with DAZN. In Mayweather’s absence, Canelo has arguably become boxing’s biggest star in the United States. Perhaps Mayweather’s fighting words, who is rumored to return to the ring later this year, are setting up a rematch with the Mexican slugger.

Nick Diaz had a strong message for boxing’s biggest star Canelo Alvarez. Diaz urged the champion to stop fighting ‘bums.’ He also told Oscar De La Hoya that a fight vs. him is the real super fight.

If you think Diaz is kidding around, think again. This is what he told TMZ Sports regarding the situation.

“Let’s be real. Canelo moving up to my weight? You ain’t gonna win that fight.”

The elder Diaz has long been considered one of MMA’s most accomplished strikers. He has trained with top-flight boxers like Andre Ward for several years.

However, Diaz now believes he could not just compete with one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best in Alvarez, but believes he could defeat Alvarez.

“You’re just basically one of them little guys I spar before I fight,” Diaz says … adding, “Nothing personal. Motherf**ker don’t speak English so he ain’t knowing what I’m saying anyway.”

Watch Diaz destroy De La Hoya, Golden Boy, and Canelo Alvarez here:

If you think this trash talk is the merely latest round of MMA fighters calling out elite boxing champions, then you are correct, albeit with one big difference.

When De La Hoya was asked if there’s a chance he’d make Diaz vs Alvarez, let’s just say “The Golden Boy” isn’t afraid to make waves.

Nick Diaz says Canelo Alvarez doesn’t match him in terms of fighting and drawing ability.

Diaz hasn’t competed since Jan. 2015. There’s no doubt that many fight fans have been hoping for his return. Diaz is eligible to fight again after running into some issues with the Nevada State Athletic Commission over marijuana use and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) for whereabouts failures. Still, Diaz has yet to take a bout.

Nick Diaz Believes He Surpasses Canelo Alvarez

Diaz is aware of the crazy boxing vs. MMA proposal bouts such as Floyd Mayweather vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov. Diaz told TMZ Sports that Alvarez wouldn’t be much of a challenge for him and isn’t comparable when it comes to drawing power (via BJPenn.com):

“I’ve never even thought about that, but the guy is moving up to 168 and fighting some no names. Let’s be real Canelo moving up to my weight, he ain’t gonna win that fight. No way, come on man. You’re just basically one of them little guys I spar before I fight. I am a professional fighter, I’ve had over 37 fights. Nothing personal. Motherf**ker don’t speak English so he ain’t knowing what I’m saying anyway. Y’all getting the money, if y’all gonna make all that money, making billions of dollars or millions of dollars now, I’m a better fighter, I’m a bigger draw.”

Alvarez recently signed an 11-fight, $365 million deal with sports streaming service DAZN. Mayweather recently ripped the signing and said it only takes him 36 minutes or less to make $300 million. Mayweather and Alvarez fought back in 2013 with “Money” emerging victorious.

Do you think Nick Diaz can be a needle mover for the UFC now?
