Esparza To Battle Rodriguez In Final Fight Island Event

The women’s strawweight bout between Carla Esparza and Marina Rodriguez has been rescheduled for the UFC’s upcoming July 25 event on Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island.

The pair were originally set to face each other on the July 15 card which is headlined by a featherweight bout between Calvin Kattar and Dan Ige.

However, the fight was called off after one of Rodriguez’s cornermen tested positive for COVID-19 last week. Although Rodriguez herself didn’t test positive, the UFC did not let her travel on the chartered flight from Sao Paulo to Abu Dhabi.

She won’t be out for too long as according to sources close to MMA Fighting, her bout with Esparza has been moved to the July 25 event. That will be the final Fight Island event taking place for now and is headlined by a middleweight bout between former champion Robert Whittaker and Darren Till.

Esparza has won her last three in a row, including a most recent controversial split decision win over Michelle Waterson in May.

The unbeaten Rodriguez, meanwhile, is coming off a majority decision draw against Cynthia Calvillo in December. In total, she is 2-0-2 with the UFC and will be looking to earn arguably her biggest win yet against the former champion in Esparza.

Things are already heated between Claudia Gadelha and Carla Esparza if they are to have a rematch.

Following a razor-thin split decision win over Angela Hill in the co-main event of UFC Florida this past weekend, Gadelha was asked who she wanted to face next. Having already defeated Esparza in a close contest two years ago, the Brazilian called for a rematch with the former champion.

Esparza was reciprocative to the idea but having previously accused Gadelha of greasing her body in their UFC 225 contest — making it harder for her to grapple — she took a dig at the latter in her response.

“Let’s run it back!! Leave the grease at home this time ?? @ClaudiaGadelha_”

Gadelha: How The F*ck Am I Going To Grease?

That didn’t go down well with Gadelha who responded in the post-fight press conference.

“It’s 2020. The sport is evolving so much, come on,” Gadelha said (via MMA Fighting). “I have the commission following me from the time I step into the octagon to the time the fight is finish. How the f—k am I going to grease?

“Carla Esparza, stop with your f—king excuses, and let’s get back in there again.”

With her win over Hill, Gadelha is on a two-fight winning streak for the first time since 2017 as she looks to enter title contention once again.

As for Esparza, she recently earned a split decision win over Michelle Waterson at UFC 249 earlier this month to make it three wins in a row.

What do you make of Esparza’s greasing claims? Should they fight again next?

Carla Esparza’s win over Alexa Grasso was not well-received and one fan made sure to let her know.

Esparza defeated Grasso via majority decision in the co-main event of UFC Mexico City on Saturday night. Many felt Grasso had done enough to win the fight, but as the scorecards were read out, the crowd let their disapproval be heard.

And according to Esparza, one fan did it in more ways than one by pouring beer on her as she was walking out of the Octagon.

“I hate that type of behavior,” she said after the fight (via BJ Penn). “This is a sport. We all go out there and we give it our all. We work so hard to lead up to these fights. I wish those people — obviously that’s not everyone here — would have more respect.”

However, the former strawweight champion is not letting that affect her overall experience in Mexico:

“It put a damper on (the experience), but I’ve been so welcomed here in Mexico,” she added. “Even a family opened their home to me, their gym to me. There’s been so many amazing fans out here, so it doesn’t put a bad taste in my mouth for all of Mexico.

I have Mexican blood in it. There’s so many amazing people here, it’s just unfortunate there’s some bad apples in the crowd.”

Of course, the entire crowd went crazy when the main event was called off due to a no contest. Given this news as well, it doesn’t speak well for the fans in attendance.

What do you think of the UFC Mexico City crowd?
