Veteran mixed martial artists Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva will finally settle their long lasting rivalry in the main event of Bellator NYC, which will air live on pay-per-view (PPV) on June 24, 2017 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The two were supposed to face-off for the first time today at the Bellator NYC pre-fight press conference, but Silva wasn’t present, as he elected to stay home in Brazil and train:

“Because I’m training to beat somebody on June 24,” Silva said, adding that Bellator gave him the OK. “I’m focused on training back to 100 percent.”

“The Axe Murderer” hasn’t competed since a 2013 knockout of Brian Stann, while Sonnen is coming off of a disappointing submission loss to Tito Ortiz in his Bellator debut this past January.

Despite Silva not being present at the press conference, Sonnen, to little surprise, took the chance to blast his Brazilian rival, saying that he’ll finish Silva ‘inside the first round’:

“First off, I made Tito Ortiz scream ‘tap’ in less than 60 seconds, and while I suspect you’re going to be tougher than him, I still get you out of there inside the first round,” Sonnen said. “Before I get accused of hogging the mic, Wanderlei, every time you talk, all I hear is ‘garble, garble, garble.’ And I want to remind you when you address me in public, you will do it proper – it’s ‘Garble, garble, garble, Mr. Sonnen.’”

“Thank you,” he said. “It’s respectful. Say it with me, Wanderlei. ‘Mr. Sonnen.’ Please. Respectfully, please. Try it one time.”

Silva only had one response to Sonnen’s outlandish remarks:

“Suck my balls,” Silva replied to laughs from the audience.

Given the history of bad blood between between Sonnen and Silva, it was expected that the two would go back-and-forth in the lead up to the bout.

Who are you expecting to come out on top when the two finally meet on June 24?

Chael Sonnen: Tito Ortiz Is The Worst Fighter I Ever Fought

Chael Sonnen is gearing up for his grudge match with Wanderlei Silva, which will take place on June 24, 2017 in the main event of Bellator NYC at Madison Square Garden, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about his disappointing Bellator debut last January. Chael Sonnen is gearing up for his grudge match with Wanderlei Silva, which will take place on June 24, 2017 in the main event of Bellator NYC at Madison Square Garden, but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about his disappointing Bellator debut last January.

Sonnen was submitted by former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz in a fight that many said was ‘fixed’. While “The American Gangster” said the fight wasn’t fixed, he did acknowledge how ‘bad’ it had to have been for fans to believe it was:

“Oh, Tito is terrible,” Sonnen told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “Tito was absolutely terrible. I was in the fight with him and that fight ended and some people said it was a fixed fight, to use that term.

“When you fight so poorly that some people can’t even imagine you fought that poorly that it has to be fixed, that’s not good. On some hands, it’s funny we can sit here and laugh about it. But that’s how bad it was.”

After calling Ortiz ‘terrible’, Sonnen continued on to label “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ as the ‘worst fighter’ he’s ever fought. By saying that, however, Sonnen also said that the loss made him the ‘worst fighter’:

“Tito sucks,” Sonnen said. “I mean, Tito is so bad. And when you lose to a guy, then you suck. That’s the way it works, man. I wouldn’t put that guy without putting myself down. Tito is the worst fighter I ever fought and that makes me the worst fighter. And I just didn’t know that about myself.”

The bad blood between the two was evident in the lead up to the bout, but it apparently continued afterwards as well, as Sonnen claimed that Ortiz continued to be a ‘jerk’ after the fight:

“When we got into the back and he was still a jerk about it, that confused me,” Sonnen said. “It’s like, Tito, you’re terrible. I’m the name that’s gonna move this company forward. You’ve gotta pass the torch.”

Do you expect Sonnen to help move Bellator forward when he headlines their second pay-per-view (PPV) event on June 24, or will he face another set back against Silva?

One of the greatest MMA rivalries of all-time that never led to a fight…

To say Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen have a history would be a massive understatement. Sharing an intense rivalry that started during the run-up to Sonnen’s first fight with Anderson Silva, the two were booked in to coach The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3. ‘The Axe Murderer’ was offended by Sonnen’s comments about Brazilians, and the two had faced off many times before they coached on TUF. Approaching the highly anticipated climax in 2013, the two brawled in a memorable scene on the Ultimate Fighter set.

Moving from UFC 173, to the TUF Brazil 3 final, and finally to UFC 175, the bout between Wandy and ‘The American Gangster’ would never materialize. Instead their beef was dispersed following a string of failed drug tests by Sonnen, and a controversial avoided dope screen in the case of Silva. Sonnen would receive a two-year ban by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but Silva would get hit with a lifetime ban by the NAC. Finally in 2016, both men would be free to fight again. ‘The Axe Murderer’ had his lifetime ban overturned and was released from his UFC contract.

Paths Will Cross

Signing with Rizin Fighting Federation, Wanderlei Silva will look to settle an old feud with Mirko Cro Cop in December. Close partners with Rizin and also keen acquirers of UFC legends, Bellator MMA got their hands on Chael Sonnen. The gangster from Oregon will take on Tito Ortiz in January of next year, and here’s where the plot thickens. Bellator CEO Scott Coker says Wandy is still furious at Sonnen, and the two will finally meet in the cage next year! Via MMAMania:

“Since Bellator contracted Chael Sonnen, believe me, we’ve been getting texts and calls from Wanderlei saying that he wants that fight. So, I think you’ll see that fight some time in 2017 for Bellator. Wanderlei is still pissed about what happened between them and he wants that fight. It’s something personal for him. Honestly, I don’t really know what happened to make him that compelled to fight Chael, but I can tell you that he is not happy with what happened between them.”

“That’s going to be a fight where everybody stops whatever they’re doing to turn on the TV to see the fight. As we all know, that fight has been building for a number of years and they couldn’t work it out, but now I feel the timing is perfect.”

The Saga Continues

Many memories and classic moments already exist between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. Unfortunately for Bellator, due to Zuffa copyright they won’t be able to use any of those confrontations to hype the fight. The saga will come to ahead in 2017, as Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen’s paths will cross after six years of waiting.

Go Bellator!

Um…that initial CSAC 1 year suspension (which was reduced to 6 months) is looking like a dream sentence compared to the possible 20 years Chael Sonnen might be facing now. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon says the UFC Middleweight entered a guilty plea today to a charge of Federal Money Laundering. At sentencing, which will take place on March 28th, Sonnen may face up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $500, 000. This makes that CSAC fine of $2,500 seem very…well, small.

MMAWeekly.com broke down the money laundering incident as:

“The scheme involved Joel Rosabal and Chadwick Amsden, employees of Crown Point Enterprises, dba Lighthouse Financial Group (Lighthouse), a mortgage brokerage service based principally in Vancouver, Washington, with operations in Oregon and elsewhere,” the press release revealed. “Rosabal and Amsden submitted a materially false loan application on the buyer’s behalf… Sonnen acted as the realtor for the transaction. Sonnen submitted a false letter and Sales Agreement Addendum instructing the title company to pay loan proceeds to a plumbing company for repairs to the home. In fact, Sonnen knew and had negotiated with Rosabal that no repairs would be performed on the home and the funds designated to the plumbing company would instead be paid to the buyer as a cash incentive to purchase the home. This agreement was not disclosed to (the mortgage company). Once the loan was funded, the title company paid over $69,000 to the plumbing company and the plumbing company, in turn and at Sonnen’s direction, paid $65,000 to the buyer of the home.”

It was also reported, the usually outspoken Sonnen, who recently appeared on ESPN’s MMA Live and called out CSAC, Wanderlei Silva, as well as Brock Lesnar, could not be reached for comment. Watch the video of his MMA Live appearance below:

*Update: “According to the Oregonian, as part of his guilty plea, Sonnen agreed to give up his realtor’s license and pay a $10,000 fine. The government is recommending two years probation.” (Update provide by Steve Cofield of Cagewriter.com)

As the rumors and confirmations swirl online, 2011 is shaping up for the UFC with about 3 or 4 fights expected in March. Today we were given the official fight card for UFC 125 which takes place on the very first day of the new year, headlined by Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard. Moving on to February 5th, we will see another title on the line as Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva goes head-to-head with contender, Vitor Belfort at UFC 126. We close out the month with UFC 127 headlined by Jon Fitch and BJ Penn’s Welterweight battle at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia. Then somewhere in March we start a little UFC traffic jam with UFC on Versus 3 expected to be held March 3rd and headlined by another Welterweight tilt, Martin Kampmann vs Diego Sanchez. Rumors are now circulating that Frank Mir and Brendan Schaub could face each other on this card or perhaps they will meet on the UFC 129 card taking place in Newark, New Jersey on March 19th and expected to be headlined by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Rashad Evans…Oh! But wait…What about UFC 128? That will have to happen somewhere in March, as well to keep sequence. And now we are hearing talks of UFC 131 going down in Toronto, Ontario which would be headlined by none other than “Canada’s Most Famous Athlete” Georges St. Pierre as he picks through another Welterweight titleshot contender, Jake Shields on April 30th… But before that, UFC 130 will have to take place; unfortunately, no rumors have begun for that one just yet…Anyone want to throw in Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei Silva or Miguel Torres vs Urijah Faber or even bring the newly retired via social media outlets, Randy Couture to fill in those slots? To be continued….
