We are now just days away from Bellator’s second pay-per-view (PPV) event, as Bellator: NYC is set to go down this Saturday (June 24, 2017) live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event will be headlined by a grudge match years in the making, as veterans Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are finally set to do battle.

The two came face-to-face for the first time prior to the fight today (June 22, 2017) at the pre-fight press conference, and to little surprise, Silva shoved Sonnen. Speaking after the incident, Sonnen said that he can’t believe he keeps ‘falling for’ Silva’s antics:

“I can’t believe I keep falling for it,” Sonnen told MMAjunkie after the news conference. “Every time I let that guy get within arms reach, he does something. I won’t make like today was some big deal. So he touched me? But it could have been a punch; it could have been a kick. I don’t know why that guy has to get so handsy all the time. Even when we were coming across the stage, I put my hand out and said, ‘Just stop right there; they can take the photo from there. Let’s just stay apart for a little bit.’

“My biggest thing with it is, I don’t want this fight called off. I don’t want it canceled for any reason. I had Anderson Silva pull some stuff at a weigh-in one time (before UFC 148), and I knew it was because he didn’t want to do the fight. He was trying to get me to attack him so he could go to the hospital and play up an injury. I’m not falling for any of this stuff. If I have to take some pushes from Wanderlei Silva or whatever it is, this fight is going to happen.”

The two rivals have been scheduled to meet numerous times, but the bout has yet to come to fruition until now. Now that it’s finally set to take place, Sonnen is predicting an early finish:

“I would never play with a guy – I would never stay out there longer than I have too,” Sonnen said. “We’ll go out there and get him out of there as quickly as I can. As far as how it goes, I don’t care. I don’t care if we’ve got to stand and bang and all these stupid things you hear. It’s all stupid. You’re out there looking for a victory, and you get it as quickly as you can.”

Sonnen will enter the Bellator cage for the second time against Silva, as he made his promotional debut earlier this year, dropping a submission loss to Tito Ortiz last January.

Silva, on the other hand, will be making his Bellator debut. In fact, “The Axe Murderer” hasn’t competed since 2013 when he scored a stoppage victory over Brian Stann.

With that being said, how do you expect this fight to play out?

Bellator is set to stage their biggest show ever in this weekend’s (Sat., June 24, 2017) Bellator 24 from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY featuring a stacked card with the best the promotion can offer from top to bottom.

The event will be headlined by longtime rivals and MMA legends Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, whose beef goes back many years now. The two were supposed to meet at UFC 175 in 2014 following a run as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), but serious drug testing issues from both fighters out an abrupt and disappointing halt to the contest.

Three years later, neither has done much nor won a MMA bout, but their running spat will finally be put to rest. The brash personalities were in attendance at today’s Bellator 180 presser from NYC, where things expectedly got testy during the staredown, with Silva shoving Sonnen and several members of the security detail stepping in. Wanderlei Silva: I Want To Feel Chael Sonnen’s Blood At Bellator NYC

We are now just days away from Bellator’s second attempt at pay-per-view (PPV), as Bellator: NYC is set to take place this Saturday (June 24, 2017) from the famed Madison Square Garden in New York City. The event will be headlined by a grudge match years in the making, as veterans Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are gearing up to do battle.

The two have been scheduled to fight numerous times over the years, but the bout never came to fruition. In fact, some were worried that it would fall through this time too after Silva missed two pre-fight press conferences. “The Axe Murderer”, however, said he missed those press conferences because he wasn’t confident that he’d be able to control himself around Sonnen.

After all, the Brazilian recently admitted that he’s never had a rival quite like “The American Gangster”:

“I’ve never had an opponent like this, and I don’t like it,” Silva told MMAjunkie Radio. “I had some bad guys like (Ricardo) Arona, but (Sonnen is) many times more. I need to concentrate and be ready to make the fight what I want to do.”

“For sure I’m going to hurt him, a lot,” Silva said. “I want to feel his blood on the ground.”

Silva hasn’t competed in over four years, as his last appearance came against Brian Stann at UFC on Fuel TV 8 back in March 2013. He seems to be motivated heading into his bout with Sonnen, however, and he claimed that his ‘technique is back’:

“It’s been a long time since my last fight,” he said. “Now, finally, my technique is back. Everything is right, and I’m really happy. I’m so happy to get back to work.”

While Silva is known more for his aggressive striking and for his background in Muay Thai, Sonnen is known more for his wrestling and for his powerful takedowns. Silva is well aware of this, and he says that he’ll be ready for it on fight night:

“I trained a lot of knees, because I know what he wants to do,” Silva said. “He has just one movement, and in that moment, I’m going to catch him.”

Who do you expect to come out on top in the main event of Bellator: NYC?

Wanderlei Silva Explains Why He Missed Bellator: NYC Press Conference

On June 24, 2017, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are finally scheduled to clash in the main event of Bellator: NYC live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City. On June 24, 2017, Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva are finally scheduled to clash in the main event of Bellator: NYC live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City. Silva, however, has missed two pre-fight press conferences, leading some to wonder if he’ll actually show up on fight night.

Originally, Bellator executives said that Silva had missed the most recent press conference because he was ill, but “The Axe Murderer” recently gave his own explanation:

“The truth is, I didn’t go to the press conference because I didn’t want to do what (Cristiane) ‘Cyborg’ (Justino) did with that girl that talked (expletive) to her,” Silva told MMAjunkie.

The situation Silva is referring to occurred at the UFC’s recent Athlete Retreat in Las Vegas, where Cyborg essentially punched Magana in the face after claiming that Magana had been bashing her over social media.

Sonnen is without question Silva’s most bitter rival, as their feud dates back years, and it appears as if “The Axe Murderer” wasn’t convinced that he’d be able to control himself around the outspoken “American Gangster”:

“When I see Chael, I don’t know what’s going to happen,” Silva said. “I’m professional, but the guy has crossed the line with me and played with the wrong guy.”

Silva and Sonnen have been booked to face each other before, but the bout has never come to fruition. If all goes to plan, however, the two will finally meet and headline what is undoubtedly set to be the biggest card in Bellator history.

Aside from the main event, Scott Coker and Co. have stacked the deck for Bellator: NYC, as the co-main event will feature a bout between Fedor Emelianenko, a man many consider to be the very best heavyweight of all-time, and Matt Mitrione, a former UFC contender.

Welterweight champion Douglas Lima will welcome Lorenz Larkin to Bellator in a 170-pound title fight as well, while lightweight titleholder Michael Chandler will take on Brent Primus. In addition, highly touted prospect Aaron Pico will make his professional debut against Zach Freeman.

With Bellator: NYC just weeks away, one part of the co-main event will be noticeably absent at Thursday’s press conference

Wanderlei Silva announced on Wednesday that he was canceling his appearance in Los Angeles to promote his fight against longtime adversary Chanel Sonnen.

Silva and Sonnen, who both coached alongside one another during The Ultimate Fighter in 2014, have been scheduled to fight several times when both men were still with the UFC.

Their long awaited grudge match is finally set to take place on June 24, however this time under the Bellator banner.

The former PRIDE champion was also absent for a similar press conference in May, instead opting to satellite broadcast his appearance while training in his native Brazil.

With Bellator officials confirming Silva’s absence for tomorrow’s presser, his opponent spared no words when describing Silva’s last minute cancellation.

“It’s not exactly like Pavarotti blowing off Pagliacci,” Sonnen said. “He wasn’t gonna add anything valuable anyway. I was gonna suggest that he go outside and wash my rental car while I dealt with the media.”

No reason was given regarding Silva’s cancellation, however Bellator is planning on having a conference call with both Sonnen and Silva expected to participate.

Both men have gone back-and-forth over the years as fights between the two were scheduled and eventually scrapped due to various circumstances.

Silva and Sonnen will finally square off at Bellator’s inaugural event in New York, which will take place at the historic Madison Square Garden on June 24. This will be Silva’s first fight in four years.

The card will also feature the return of Fedor Emelianenko, widely regarded as one of the best heavyweight fighters of all time.

Wand: UFC Is Afraid Of Bellator Pay-Per-View

On June 24, 2017 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Bellator MMA will make its return to pay-per-view, with the event being headlined by a long awaited grudge match between veterans Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, who will make his promotional debut at the event. On June 24, 2017 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Bellator MMA will make its return to pay-per-view, with the event being headlined by a long awaited grudge match between veterans Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva, who will make his promotional debut at the event.

Silva hasn’t competed since scoring a thrilling stoppage victory over Brian Stann in 2013. The Brazilian legend will now make his return to mainstream MMA and he appears to have his sights set on rematches with three fellow veterans of the sport:

“I would like a rematch against Vitor Belfort, Quinton Jackson, and Dan Henderson,” Silva told FOX Sports. “There’s a lot of classic guys that would make a cool fight against me. That’s because there’s too many fights going on these days, but no classics where everyone stops to watch them. A cool rivalry, with good marketing. There’s been some good fights, obviously, but classics? With big name guys? It just doesn’t happen anymore. They’re all retiring, quitting. We need to bring back those guys so that through those classic fights, we can promote new names and make them become legends and fighting classic fights in the future like us.”

A rematch with Jackson is a possibility, but rematches against Belfort and Henderson are quite unlikely. Either way, “The Axe Murderer” is excited with the progress Bellator has been making.

In fact, he said the UFC is ‘afraid’ of the pay-per-view that Bellator is putting on:

“Bellator is growing a lot. They have a much bigger number of shows now. They’re really starting to build their champions, so kudos to them. The company growing non-stop, no doubt about it. Nowadays, Bellator is the number two company, but on June 24, everyone’s saying it’ll be number one. That’s the day we’ll beat the UFC, who cancelled their event and changed it to a different day out of respect for us. They’re afraid of this show we’re putting on, that will be huge, no doubt about it.”

Do you agree with Silva’s comments?
