Chael Sonnen and Muhammad Ali: Any Comparison?

Dana White has recently given Chael Sonnen an incredible compliment and placed him in a laudable category. White, the polarizing genius president of the UFC, claims: “I have never seen anyone who can talk like this guy since Muhammad Ali” (1).

In order to be the considered a great talker and spoken of in the same breath as the iconic Ali, there are prerequisites that need to be met. A great talker needs to speak the truth, possess upstanding character, back up their talking and behave ethically. Granted, Chael is amusing, but let us examine this claim further to see if this bold comparison carries any validity.

Accomplishments:

Anyone can talk. Some compete. Very few become champions. However, the internet can now separate truth from fiction. In appreciating one’s accolades it is important to know the facts behind one’s boasting. If they are lies, then the talks value is obviously cheapened.

Chael claims to have won a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships. Chael prior to his fight with Anderson Silva: “I’ve got two national championship plaques on my wall that [say] I can take him down. I’ve got a silver medal from the world championships in 2001 that says he can’t stop me from taking him down. If he’s got an answer to it, God bless him” (2).

Compare this to Ali. Ali won a gold medal in boxing at the Rome Summer Olympics in 1960. He was a three time champion of the world, attempting 19 title defenses. Now while Sonnen’s achievement is impressive, it is also fictitious. The silver medalist at the 2001 World Championships was Chael’s teammate, Matt Lindland (3).

Finishing second at the World University games in a relatively obscure sport seems to not be worthy of comparison to Ali, who in addition to being a Hall of Famer and an all-time pound-for-pound great, was also the undisputed heavyweight king for nearly two decades. Not only are Chael’s claims of achievements inferior to what Ali accomplished, Sonnen’s boasts are lies. The axiom: “I hear what you do and not what you say” appears to be appropriate for comparing the two and examining their accomplishments. The Oregon native did in fact win a silver medal at the 2000 World University Games, which is a much less prestigious award.

Character:

When one speaks, often people respect their words based on their character more than the wisdom being expounded. A fat trainer garners less respect than one with a shredded stomach. When both of these men talk, their pasts follow them. Ali and Sonnen were both convicted of felonies. Ali for draft evasion, Sonnen for money laundering and mortgage fraud (4).

The boxing legend did so on moral principles, because he had no interest in killing random strangers with whom he held no rancour. Ali lost three and a half years of his prime and potential earnings in the multi-millions. Sonnen swindled people of their money in order to profit his mother and himself. Ali, who could have accepted a noncombat position, refused to enter the army on any condition. Sonnen agreed to work with prosecutors to help convict others in order to reduce his own sentence. Ali eventually won his case on appeal and had his conviction overturned, while Chael is serving two years probation.

The Big Stage:

Talking the talk and walking the walk means to deliver on what you promise. Anyone can boast, but being able to accomplish what you predict is the real achievement. Ali’s biggest fights were his two against Liston, his three against Frazier and his epic “Rumble in the Jungle” against Foreman. He won six of the seven and five of the six were via KO. Chael Sonnen has lost both of his two major title fights. He lost to Paulo Filho for the WEC title and to Anderson Silva for the UFC belt.

It makes no sense to compare someone who has never won a major championship to one who is universally recognized as a top-10 great by virtually everybody. Sonnen is 4-2 in the UFC—submitting in both losses—and has only one win from a stoppage. In fact, Chael tapped out to a triangle/arm bar after equating getting a black belt in Jiu Jitsu from the Nogueira brothers to a toy found in a McDonald’s Happy Meal. This further defines Sonnen as one who exudes disrespect as opposed to deserving respect for his deeds.

Competition:

In order to be a true winner, one must legitimately prove themselves as the winner. This is done by following the agreed upon rules. One way of dishonouring oneself is through drug testing. Ali never failed a drug test. Sonnen has. Chael, while knowingly taking testosterone injections, lied on a pre-fight form by stating he had not taken any banned substances (5). His usage and lack of disclosure resulted in a fine and suspension from the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).

Classiness:

Making humorous comments that display wit and cleverness are to be commended. However, it is a sport and it is another person’s reputation that suffers from these attempts to be comical. Both parties failed here at times. Ali crossed the line with comments made about Frazier. The MMA star recently said: “You tell Anderson Silva I’m coming over and I’m kicking down his backdoor and patting his little lady on the ass, and I’m telling her to make me a steak, medium-rare, just how I like it.” To me that crosses the line of humour and is clearly offensive.

The talented contender potentially sunk to even worse levels of putrid disrespect when he allegedly commented on Lance Armstrong (6). The voice, listed as Chael’s, states that Lance’s cheating gave him cancer and now he is playing victim and profiting from his steroid use. Chael has denied that it is his voice on the recording. The link is available below. On the Jim Rome show Sonnen stated that listeners would agree that it is not his voice. What do you think?

In conclusion, to compliment one for lying, losing and cheating seems nonsensical and unwarranted. Any comparisons to the one who literally “shook the world” and consistently proved they were “the greatest” is absolutely unfounded and should be discredited immediately. Yes, Chael Sonnen is an excellent fighter and a legitimate threat to beat one of the greatest fighters and athletes of all time in Anderson Silva, but it does not excuse him for being a documented swindler, liar and cheat.

The MMA Chain Gang: A Depressing Review of 2011?s Criminal Activities

Most ‘crimes’ in MMA take the form of inept judging and flagrant rule breaking, but this past year many professional fighters were caught up in activities that landed them inside of a very different sort of cage. Get ready for a trip down memory lane in our most depressing “booking roundup” of the year. Here’s your run down of 2011’s biggest arrests, convictions, acquittals, and sentencings.

Random Assaults

Ben Fodor (aka“Phoenix Jones”)

Elements of the Crime: You almost get the feeling that some of the fighters on this list go looking for trouble. In the case of Ben Fodor, that’s entirely accurate. The brother of Strikeforce fighter Caros Fodor, Ben has only had one professional fight, preferring instead to wage his battles on the mean streets of Seattle under the moniker “Phoenix Jones”. The would-be super hero tried to break up a street fight earlier this year by dosing the parties with pepper spray. In addition to enraging the “bad guys”, Fodor’s actions caught the attention of local authorities. It turns out that when you pepper spray a crowd you’re committing a crime, unless you have a written note from Commissioner Gordon.

The Charges: Assault

The Sentence: Though Fodor was summoned to court, no charges were filed.

Career Fallout: Well, a fighting career isn’t really his focus. His crime-fighting career, however, may have taken a hit. Jones’s ‘super-secret’ identity was revealed as a function of the court process. Now anyone he’s ever loved is at risk.

Ricco Rodriguez

Elements of the Crime: When Ricco Rodriguez wants to party, Ricco Rodriguez wants to party. It’s caused him plenty of trouble in his life, from becoming the first UFC fighter suspended for coke abuse to a little incident where he dragged his not-quite-yet-dead girlfriend’s body behind the wheel of his wrecked car. After an appearance on “Celebrity Rehab”, things were looking up for the former champ, but then he short changed a cab driver after being dropped off a bar and slammed the cabbie to the ground when he called the authorities. Unfortunately “Suave” hadn’t calmed down by the time the cops arrived; as they tried to place him under arrest, he shoved one of them into the wall.

The Charges: Assault and resisting arrest

The Sentence: N/A

Career Fallout: None. In fact, after the incident he picked up his twelfth win and competed in Bellator where Seth Petruzelli put him into the sort of delirious state he’d normally lie, cheat, or steal for.

Hong Man Choi

Brock Lesnar Hong Man Choi K-1 Dynamite USA

Elements of the Crime: Compared to most of the drunken women that fell prey to MMA fighters this year, Hong Man Choi’s victim got off pretty easy. The 20 year old refused to pay what she considered to be an inflated tab after having drinks at the K1 & MMA fighter’s pub in Gwangjin, Korea. Choi was said to have punched the woman after she cursed at him during their brief argument. The 7’2” giant admitted to pushing the woman aside after she had struck him, but no more.

The Charges: Assault, Scaring small children

The Sentence: Both parties were able to reach a private settlement in the matter. Choi did not face any legal action.

Career Fallout: If fighting Jose Canseco doesn’t kill your career, nothing can, bruh.

Junie Browning

Elements of the Crime: Attention whore Junie Browning came correct with a dramatic, last minute entry to our rap-sheet wrap-up. The aptly-named “Lunatik” took a break from training in Phuket, Thailand to have a few drinks with friends at a local watering hole. Trouble must have a passport, because it promptly tracked Junie down and a massive bar, street, and hospital brawl ensued. What exactly prompted the melee and who was the aggressor is a matter of whose story you believe. It’s your classic case of “drunken-insane-MMA-washout-said/drunken-bar-owner-potential-plane-bomber-said. What we do know is that Browning went into hiding, either from authorities or the Thai mafia. More details poured in, but they hardly shed light on the matter.

The Charges: Multiple assault charges

The Sentence: In the midst of a massive manhunt, Junie turned himself in to authorities, who opted to work with both parties to find a resolution to the squab rather than press criminal charges. Thus far those efforts have proven fruitless.

Career Fallout: Junie only fought once in 2011, picking up his fourth straight loss on a regional card in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While this recent legal dust-up won’t endear him to any big league promoters, neither will his fighting.

Chael Sonnen, you’ve been warned, and that’s the bottom line because UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon “Bones” Jones said so.

Jones personally tweeted himself a very simple warning to the UFC on FOX 2 co-headliner after Sonnen originally made remarks on TSN’s Off The Record with Michael Landsberg.

Now, wait a minute here…TSN’s Off The Record with Michael Landsberg?

Isn’t that the same show Sonnen walked off from after an argument and misunderstanding about why he took the “loser leaves town” stipulation off the table for a then-pending UFC 117 rematch with reigning UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva?

Sounds like the same show we all heard of after Sonnen’s UFC 136 win over Brian Stann, but Sonnen must have learned his lesson from the last time he was on Landsberg’s show because he appeared on that same show in order to promote his UFC on FOX 2 bout against Mark Munoz.

That, boys and girls, is where the inspiration for Jones’ warning came from.

Specifically, Sonnen said the following about Silva and why he’d be watching Jones as well as UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, who Sonnen addressed as “Grease St-Pierre” when last he spoke to Landsberg:

“I’m done with the guy. He and I have no business. He’s cold product. He’s like Jheri Curls and Pepsi Clear. He’s yesterday’s news. I destroyed this guy back when he was tough. That was years ago. He’s so far over the hill and so far past his prime that it’s not worth talking about.

I’m going to become the No. 1 contender on January 28th and despite what you may think, I’m not going to use that voucher to fight Anderson Silva. I’ll be looking at (Jon) Jones, (Junior) dos Santos and possibly (Georges) St. Pierre. I will take that voucher to Dana White and pick one of those three guys. My time with Anderson is done.”

Is Sonnen for real about the prospect of a meeting with either St-Pierre, Dos Santos or Jones, or was there an ulterior motive involved?

Either way, as Jones said, Sonnen knows where Jones will be, so if Sonnen is feeling that froggy, he should know that Jones is giving him the green light to jump, but is this a jump that Sonnen should even dare to take?

When Sonnen is done watching, he will likely let the MMA world know exactly who has the 12 pounds of gold that Sonnen wants, but until then, he must prepare for the business that he and Mark Munoz will do when January 28th arrives.

MMA‘s own master of magniloquence Chael Sonnen has taken it upon himself to call out Jon “Bones” Jones, Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos and Georges “Rush” St-Pierre.

According to Yahoo Sports, Sonnen has now set his sights on the triumvirates of the heavyweight, light heavyweight and welterweight divisions, whilst consigning Anderson Silva to the history books.

“I’m done with the guy. He and I have no business,” Sonnen said in an interview with Michael Landsberg. “He’s cold product men. He’s like jheri curls and Pepsi Clear. He’s yesterday’s news. I destroyed this guy back when he was tough. That was years ago. He’s so far over the hill and so far past his prime that it’s not worth talking about.

I’ll be looking at [Jon] Jones, [Junior] dos Santos and possibly [Georges] St. Pierre. I will take that voucher to Dana White and pick one of those three guys. My time with Anderson is done,” Sonnen said.

Ever since he almost supplanted Silva as the UFC middleweight champion back at UFC 117, the trash-talking Sonnen has berated “The Spider” from pillar to post at every given opportunity.

The reasons for his incessant goading and abrasive behaviour are due to the fact that he believed the wrong man was declared the winner that night, and thus wants an immediate rematch at all costs.

The rematch that Sonnen has so vociferously voiced is somewhere in the offing. The prerequisite for said rematch, however, is dependent on whether or not he can throw a spanner in the works of Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz’s own harboured ambitions of vying for Silva’s coveted crown.

That matchup is slated for UFC on Fox 2, with the winner guaranteed a shot at the middleweight Holy Grail.

Though this latest outburst by the orotund rhetorician that is Chael Patrick Sonnen might just be an alternative ruse to get under the skin of Silva yet again.

UFC News: "Punch Buddies" T-Shirt Line Releases Ridiculous Chael Sonnen Tee

Doing some last minute Christmas shopping? How about the new “Punch Buddies,” UFC light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar’s t-shirt line, Chael Sonnen tee?

The shirt reads “I want YOU Anderson Silva” and features Sonnen in full Uncle Sam attire, of course referencing the old United States army recruitment poster.

Given that no one has come close to trash talking the reigning UFC middleweight champion the way Sonnen has, the shirt seems quite appropriate.

The shirt runs for $29.98 and can be purchased here

Sonnen vs. Silva II should finally become a reality if Sonnen can defeat fellow middleweight contender Mark Munoz at UFC on FOX 2.

Sonnen and Bonnar recently appeared alongside each other in a skit from the World MMA Awards, which Sonnen hosted.

Uncle Chael played the psychologist of the former “Ultimate Fighter” finalist, helping him find his inner “American Psycho.”

For anyone who missed it, or for those who would just like to see it again, that video can be seen here.

“Punch Buddies” is Bonnar’s second attempt at a clothing line, the first being the “Trash Talkin’ Kids.”

The Brazilian-Jiu Jitsu black belt ran into problems with the “Trash Talkin’ Kids” shirts when UFC welterweight Josh Koscheck sued him for using his likeness without giving him permission.

Koscheck also wanted royalties from the t-shirt sales, given that his likeness was being used.

After a long war of words between the two, Bonnar acknowledged that Koscheck was right in the situation following his most recent victory over Kyle Kingsbury at UFC 139.
