TUF 14 Finale: Why Chael Sonnen Would Defeat Both Bisping and Miller

At UFC 136, the UFC welcomed back Chael Sonnen, who had been suspended for a year and had his share of legal issues. With all of that behind him, he defeated Brian Stann in the second round by arm triangle choke, afterward calling out the champion Anderson Silva

It was then assumed that Sonnen was the No. 1 contender, and after a weird phase of Anderson’s representatives saying Sonnen didn’t deserve the fight, the UFC announced that Chael was indeed the No. 1 contender. Soon after, Silva ended up injured and out until June.

When that was announced, Sonnen had already said multiple times that he wanted to stay active, and that if someone could beat him, then they deserved the title shot. The UFC soon announced that Sonnen would be facing Mark Munoz at UFC on FOX 2, after Munoz did an interview discussing how they had wrestled each other in the past. At the World MMA Awards, Sonnen stated in an interview that he was not facing Munoz, and without actually saying it, he implied that he would be facing the winner of Michael Bisping vs. Jason Miller in The Ultimate Fighter finale.

Years ago, Sonnen defeated Miller by decision, but neither man is truly the same fighter that they were in that fight, and Sonnen has been wanting a fight with Bisping for a while now.

If Michael Bisping were to win and go on to face Chael Sonnen, this match up would be very bad for him. Bisping does have wrestling, and has decent stand-up, more technique than power. The problem is that Chael has some of the best wrestling in MMA, and his striking is very underrated, and always plays a big role in him setting up his take downs.

Bisping is good at picking his opponents apart, but when the pressure is put on him, it appears that he becomes overwhelmed, ex. vs. Dan Henderson, and vs. Wanderlei Silva. Chael always puts the pressure on and never backs off. This would be a fight where Chael would utilize his striking, and do what he does best and utilize his wrestling and ground and pound handing Bisping a loss.

Many people try to discredit the striking of Sonnen, when in fact he got the best of Silva on the feet when they fought, and before he went to college years ago, he wanted to give up wrestling to focus only on boxing. Him sticking to wrestling was a very wise choice.

If Sonnen were to rematch Miller, this would be the tougher of the two fights. Miller is an excellent grappler, and also has much improved stand up. The problem that Miller has had over the years is that he has always struggled against grapplers that were just a little bit better than him. Sonnen’s wrestling, and his dominate top control would be the difference maker in this fight. Miller would have to land a sub off of his back if he is going to win this fight. Sonnen has had his trouble’s with elite grapplers in his past. People hate on Sonnen for his submission defense, but if you go and see who exactly the losses were too, then odds are the hate would go down just a little bit on that topic.

It would be totally unfair to say that Chael would 100 percent defeat both men, because this is MMA and anything can happen, but when it comes down to it, the Sonnen vs Silva rematch is a must and Chael will do whatever it takes to get that fight.

When Sonnen’s father was on his death bed, he promised him that he would be champion, and defeating one of these two men will put him one step closer to his promise.

Why the Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz Fight Needs To Happen

The UFC’s middleweight division has seen some bad light these past few years, due to the state of the division as a whole as well as the inability to dethrone the champ. Fans had been waiting to see who at 185 could give Anderson Silva a good run for his money, but “The Spider” continued his rule.

Then came along Chael Sonnen.

In their fight, Sonnen gave the biggest beating to Silva than he had received as an accumulation of his entire career. Silva got the submission finish, but it still took some luster away from his shiny armor of invincibility. Without a question in people’s minds, the rematch was coming.

Sonnen was suspended following the fight due to his TRT levels, and thus the rematch was postponed. Silva went on to beat Belfort and Okami, and Sonnen came back following the suspension and beat Brian Stann.

The rematch was put back in motion, but Silva’s injury forced the UFC to postpone it once again. Mark Munoz, the No. 1 contender, was then put in front of Chael Sonnen. Chael Sonnen has since taken to the media and expressed that Munoz was not his next fight and hinted that it would, in fact, be the winner of Jason Miller vs. Michael Bisping.

While Miller and Bisping have their own fight to worry about, the two middleweights that are at the top right now are Munoz and Sonnen. In order to determine the true contender and justify the title shot for Sonnen, the original Sonnen vs. Munoz needs to take place.

What you have with this matchup is the two “No. 1 contenders.” Statistically, Mark Munoz is the top contender, being one of the few on a solid four-fight win streak at 185 against some good opponents. He is one win ahead of Bisping, who could tie it all up if he beats Miller on Saturday.

On the other hand, you have Chael Sonnen. Chael Sonnen is coming off of only one win that was preceded by a suspension and a loss.

In the public eye, however, he is the most worthy of fighting for the title next. He is the top contender in the sense that he is the best and biggest challenge to Silva in the majority perspective. The rematch is the fight fans want to see and will generate one of the highest revenues for a UFC event to date.

One fighter is the deserving contender, the other the desired.

Having the two of them fight is the way to clearly define who is the true No. 1 contender for the belt. It would be a definitive semifinal to lead up to the Brazilian champ.

The only other factor to look at with Sonnen is the result of Miller vs. Bisping. Sonnen is saying that his next fight is with the winner, but given the timing, who knows how the next title shot will be issued? If Bisping dominates Miller in an impressive fashion, he would statistically rival Munoz in contention, but another factor would be if Dan Henderson wanted to throw his name into the hat.

June 2012 is the slated estimate of when Silva will be back in the Octagon, giving plenty of time for Bisping and Miller to fight and for Sonnen to fight the winner in between, but the margin is close. Following the time when Sonnen would fight the winner, it would be around March or April before that could happen. If Sonnen won that, he would have a quick turnaround if Silva gets put on a card in June.

Sonnen is a guy who will fight on two-seconds notice, but two months is not enough for some in preparation for a title fight. In this equation, you have to wonder where Munoz falls in this picture as well.

With the cluster of names in the mix, having Sonnen and Munoz fight to determine who gets the next shot is the best route. Bisping and Miller will fight and—based on that result—Bisping may not even be in the mix. If Miller wins, he still probably needs one more fight before his shot.

Sonnen fighting Munoz also helps silence the critics who think Sonnen shouldn’t be getting a title shot at all, much less a rematch. By beating Munoz, it follows the same line as Urijah Faber; losing the title match, beating the No. 1 contender and then being put back into the title-shot talks.

When it comes down to it, the best decision that helps define the middleweight division and the contenders for the title is the original idea of Sonnen vs. Munoz. The fight itself is an exciting prospect, and the result is indisputable. The winner of that fight is the most worthy and true contender for Anderson Silva’s belt.

In the words of Big John McCarthy, “Let’s get it on!”

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who has been the scourge of anything remotely named Chael Sonnen, spoke to MMAWeekly.com about what the significance of Sonnen’s constant abrasive and vitriolic attacks meant to him personally.

The response by Silva, who had been in attendance at the 2011 Fighters Only World MMA (mixed martial arts) Awards, was casual and straight to the point.

“Nothing” he said.

He elaborated a bit more on why Sonnen’s antics were inconsequential to him.

“I’m in the UFC for fights,” Silva explained. “Chael, Mark Munoz, Vitor Belfort, Brian Stann, Chris Leben, I’m staying here for fight. This is my work. It’s my life.”

Of the above mentioned combatants, Silva has defeated three of them—Sonnen, Belfort and Leben.

Since Silva defeated Sonnen back at UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) 117, the latter has done everything in his power to instigate a rematch and might just get it, but first he needs to take care of others vying for UFC gold.

Also, before any type of rematch takes place, “The Spider” needs to fully recuperate following a damaged shoulder he sustained prior to the Yushin Okami fight at UFC 134.
