Conor McGregor may have won the respect of many fans, fighters, and boxing purists alike when he appeared to have won some early rounds over all-time great Floyd Mayweather before getting stopped in the tenth round of their highly anticipated boxing match from Las Vegas last night, but apparently, two of the ringside judges didn’t see it that way.

In a picture of the official scorecards released by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC), judges Burt Clements and Guido Cavalleri both had McGregor winning just the first round, while third judge Dave Moretti gave McGregor a more realistic seeming first three. Obviously, it didn’t matter when the UFC star faded down the stretch and was finished in the championship rounds, but the scores of the first two judges would at least suggest a skew towards boxing.

At least that’s how McGregor saw it, as he dubbed Clements and Cavalleri’s scores ‘biased’ when he was notified of how the bout had been scored (via USA TODAY):

“I think that’s very biased. I am actually shocked at that. I thought I won first three clearly. The fourth could have gone either way. I thought I snuck out round eight, then he won nine and got the finish. I thought I did okay.”

Indeed he did better than okay, landing more punches on the notoriously elusive Mayweather than legendary boxer Manny Pacquiao did in their highly anticipated but ultimately lackluster ‘Fight of the Century’ a couple years back. Sure, he didn’t shock the world by knocking out arguably the best defensive boxer ever like he had promised to, but climbing into the ring to face one of a completely different sport’s all-time greats is a task few athletes – if any – have truly accomplished and not been completely embarrassed.

As for the judging, well, McGregor probably knew he would most likely need a finish to beat Mayweather in Las Vegas, a town that “Money” makes an almost unheard-of amount of just that for.

What did you think? Was the scoring awry? Would it have turned out to be a huge controversy if McGregor had not faded down the stretch?

Conor McGregor Reveals He’s A Free Agent After Mayweather Bout

Conor McGregor may have come up short in his boxing debut against all-time great Floyd Mayweather (watch full highlights here) last night (Sat., August 26, 2017) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., but “The Notorious” UFC champion obviously still has a bevy of lucrative fights awaiting him once he decides to return – be it in MMA or the boxing ring once again.

He’s certainly earned at least a brief amount of time to reset and collect his thoughts, as he put forth an effort that many felt was impossible due to him having no professional boxing bouts on his resumé. Both he and his boss, UFC President Dana White, have suggested McGregor will be back in the octagon before 2017 is finished. It’s certainly what the UFC needs – especially

It’s certainly what the UFC needs – especially in the aftermath of Jon Jones’ latest failed drug test – but McGregor says he needs to discuss his financial arrangement with new UFC owners WME-IMG, and wouldn’t rule out a possible boxing return during the during the Mayweather vs. McGregor post-fight press conference.

While the MMA superstar wouldn’t commit to anything just yet, he did also hint at a possible trilogy bout with his longtime rival Nate Diaz in the near future (transcribed by MMA Fighting):

“I’m certainly open to hearing what WME-IMG, what they want, and what Showtime wants, and if they want me to come over to boxing then we can talk. I’m certainly young. Twenty-nine years of age. I don’t think the boxing world or the fighting world has seen a man as confident as this come in at this age and with this amount of accolades and this amount of records and this amount of revenue generated. So I’m certainly open to all options.

“I have certainly many contenders in the mixed martial arts game. I have a trilogy bout with Nate Diaz that’s sitting there, I have options.”

Diaz seems to most certainly want the fight, especially considering scenes like these. But while the options are certainly open for McGregor, who just turned 29, he obviously isn’t quite sure exactly what’s next even though he wants to continue to improve in the boxing game:

“People ask me what’s next. I’m not quite sure what’s next,” McGregor said. “I have multiple titles in the UFC to think about and I could always continue in the boxing game so what’s next for me is to continue to study and continue to learn.”

So with the entire combat sports world speculating about what’s next for arguably its biggest star, McGregor himself isn’t in as much of a rush. He’s proud to have accomplished what he did versus Mayweather, even in a loss, and revealed he was a ‘free agent’ who had his name on the side of the ring in one of boxing’s biggest fights ever last night:

“I’m just relishing in it for now,” McGregor said. “I have many options in mixed martial arts. I’m sure there’s options now that will present themselves in the boxing game. Right now I’m a free agent, my name is on the ring. McGregor Sports and Entertainment on a boxing ring, that’s something — I’m very proud of that. So I’ll see what’s next, but I’m open.

“I love competing. I love a good fight. Tonight was a damn good fight and that’s why you’re seeing me up here showing my heart. I enjoyed myself and that’s it. Long may it continue. I can’t tell you exactly what’s next, but know something will be next.”

Last night’s (Sat., August 26, 2017) massive Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor boxing match from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., obviously elicited a wide range emotion from the collective combat sporting world.

Mayweather won the bout by tenth round TKO (watch highlights here), but not before McGregor impressed with his unorthodox abilities in the ring, as he actually won at least one early round and as many as four overall (depending on who you ask) before gassing and succumbing to the vast experience of the undefeated “Money.”

The fact that McGregor found any semblance of success has more boxing-focused onlookers speculating that Mayweather has indeed lost a step despite his win over McGregor, however, and apparently, UFC lightweight Nate Diaz is among them. A video surfaced on Twitter of Diaz arguing that Mayweather “wasn’t even trying” with SHOWTIME Sports analyst and retired UFC fighter Brendan Schaub, which ended with Diaz flipping Schaub off and stating, “Well, I’m just saying you’re a bitch.”

The biggest fight of the century is now in the books.

The fight did live up to the hype and as a promise to the fans, boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. did deliver a finish on Saturday night in his boxing showdown with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor. It was a back and forth tough battle.

Over the past few weeks, there had been a lot of trash talk between McGregor and retired two-time boxing champion Paulie Malignaggi. If you recall, the two fighters sparred together twice in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a result of those sparring sessions, there has been a big fallout.

The reason for the fallout is due to Malignaggi being critical of McGregor and the way that he was portrayed by McGregor on social media. Malignaggi had stated in several interviews that he got the better of McGregor. UFC President Dana White released footage of McGregor landing some hard, clean shots on Malignaggi.

There were photos of McGregor showboating with his hands behind his back during their first eight-round sparring session. Then, a second photo came out of McGregor looking down at Malignaggi on the canvas. Malignaggi said that moment was the result of a pushdown. However, by looking at the video footage, it appears that Malignaggi was actually knocked down by strikes.

Now, with the fight in the books, Malignaggi has reacted to McGregor’s TKO loss to Mayweather Jr. Malignaggi spoke about the fight during the Showtime post-fight show, which you can watch here:

“He [McGregor] can give you a lot of unorthodox looks and can be a little bit confusing, especially the first time that you see him. Of course, he’s still a rookie, and after a certain amount of unorthodox looks, he runs out of ideas. And that is kind of what happened tonight. The pressure was applied more and more. Good start, confusing look at first but once you get the hang of it, then he doesn’t have any more ideas.”

Malignaggi also tweeted out the following about the fight:

“Who remembers the movie “The Great White Hype?”. Classic Movie wasn’t it? Funny as hell lol.”

“You just gotta watch the 12 rounds UNEDITED that I did with him in half ass shape to know that. Let’s see if they release it now, all of it.”

Conor McGregor Thought Mayweather Stoppage Was ‘A Little Early’

Conor McGregor may have fallen short of his goal in a traditional sense when he was stopped by Floyd Mayweather in their anticipated boxing super fight (watch highlights here) last night (Sat., August 26, 2017) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., but he showed the heart of a true champion in lasting 10 rounds with one […]

Conor McGregor may have fallen short of his goal in a traditional sense when he was stopped by Floyd Mayweather in their anticipated boxing super fight (watch highlights here) last night (Sat., August 26, 2017) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., but he showed the heart of a true champion in lasting 10 rounds with one of boxing’s all-time greats and also landing some great shots of his own early on.

In fact, that was enough to arguably win him the first three rounds, but towards the middle and especially later rounds, Mayweather’s expansive experience edge and supreme conditioning pulled away from the much less seasoned “Notorious,” leading to a tenth-round stoppage that many felt was early from referee Robert Byrd even if McGregor was in clear trouble and well on his way to losing the fight.

McGregor himself echoed that school of thought in his post-fight interview (quotes transcribed by MMA Fighting), noting that there was a ton on the line, and he often gets a bit tired and wobbly in his mixed martial arts bouts, so the match could have been allowed to continue a little longer:

“I thought it was close though and I thought it was a little early of a stoppage. I get like that when I’m tired. I get a little wobbly and flowy. But f**k, get me into the corner and I’ll recover and I’ll come back. And I’d like it to hit the floor. There’s a lot on the line here, (Byrd) should have let me keep going I thought, but fair play to (Mayweather).”

Mark J. Rebilas for USA TODAY Sports

“The Notorious” continued on to focus on his prior loss to Nate Diaz in March 2016, a fight after which he rebounded to defeat Diaz in the rematch five months later. With his warrior spirit already established, McGregor would have at least liked Byrd to allow him to go out on his shield in his boxing debut:

“I’ve been here before,” McGregor said. “I’ve been strangled on live TV and came back, so I don’t know. I would have liked him to just let it go. F**k it. I got in here in the squared circle, everything was different, it was a lot more fun.”

McGregor then reiterated that the trouble he was in stemmed from fatigue rather than from any damage he was absorbing after he said Mayweather ‘wasn’t that fast or powerful,’ ending his interview by reaffirming his wish Byrd would have at least let him get knocked down:

“That’s exactly what it is, is fatigue,” McGregor continued. “That’s why I thought the ref could have just let it keep going, let me go down. Let the man put me down. Wobbly and fatigue, that’s energy, that’s not damage. I’m clear-headed.”

Clear-headed he appeared after the fight as well, and while he may have been stopped in a bout he repeatedly boasted he would win just that way, McGregor still earned the respect of the majority of a boxing community who had largely written him off, with some claiming he wouldn’t even land a punch on “Money.”

But he landed many, and he proved MMA fighters can compete with even the best boxers in the process, no small feat considering Mayweather’s truly legendary resume.

That’s a feat in and of itself, so early stoppage or not, McGregor accomplished a rare goal by battling Mayweather last night, even if he didn’t win.

Dana White Reacts To Conor McGregor’s Loss To Floyd Mayweather

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor may have had a rude welcome to boxing when Floyd Mayweather stopped him by TKO in the tenth round of their massive boxing super fight (full highlights here) tonight (Sat., August 26, 2017) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, but he arguably won by proving he could hang with one of boxing’s all-time greats in his first-ever bout.

That was just the case, especially in the early going of the fight, where the Irish superstar came out aggressive and definitely landed more shots than the patient and calculating Mayweather, who is notorious for using the early rounds to figure out his opponent’s style. McGregor won the first three rounds on one ringside judge’s scorecard and on many more fans’ virtual cards, showing he could compete with the best in boxing without any prior experience.

That’s left most believing McGregor impressed overall despite the loss, and also that he has nothing to hang his head on after battling one of boxing’s all-time greats, and one who is undefeated, no less. It was exactly the sentiment that UFC president Dana White felt about his biggest star, praising his efforts in a post-fight interview with FOX Sports’ Megan Olivi:

In the interview, White offered his belief that McGregor looked excellent in meeting a surprisingly aggressive Mayweather in the center of the ring, and actually landed some big shots of his own early before revealing that “The Notorious” was supremely disappointed with the defeat:

“It was obviously not the fight I was expecting. I thought Conor would be chasing him around, and he would eventually catch him with some shots.

“He hit him with a lot of shots and looked fantastic tonight. I couldn’t be more proud of him. (Conor) is not, he is very upset with himself. He feels like that fight was there for the taking.

As for the stoppage, which many believed was early, White said he was fine with it, and proud of McGregor overall for lasting 10 rounds with a man whom many feel is the best boxer of all time:

“He thinks the fight was stopped early, I was good with the stoppage. He’s not a professional boxer. He stepped in there to fight arguably the greatest of all time, and he looked damn good doing it. I was okay with 10 rounds.”

So White not surprisingly stood by his top draw even in a losing effort, an effort that could even actually be good for the UFC considering the promotion needs its biggest star more than ever in a tough year for the world’s MMA boss. If he had shocked the world and somehow beaten Mayweather, there’s a solid enough chance White would have never been able to showcase his skills in the UFC again.

But now, if history has proven anything, “The Notorious” will be back in camp sooner than later looking for his next massive challenge in combat sports. He’ll certainly be back – who should he face when returns?
