It may feel like it’s certain that UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor will meet undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the ring at some point, but if it does happen like it’s expected to, the future of the UFC and indeed MMA as a whole could be significantly affected.

That becomes clear when you take into account the fact that McGregor would most likely make as much or more as he did in his reportedly $40 million (by his own estimation) 2016 where he headlined three of the top-selling pay-per-views in UFC history. When a payday like that morphs from a running joke to real, it will understandably grow increasingly harder to keep “Notorious” motivated to keep fighting in the octagon for a fraction of the cost, even if he hasn’t defended a single one of his two UFC championships.

McGregor may or may not call it a day after he faces Mayweather (if and when the fight does happen), and his longtime Straight Blast Gym (SBG) teammate Gunnar Nelson confirmed that in a recent interview with ESPN.com, noting that the superstar’s UFC return was uncertain and ‘depended on certain things, and not just money’:

“It will depend on certain things. Money is not the only thing he cares about, at all. He does care about it a lot, but if a fight excites him and he thinks it’s a great challenge — if it’s making history and all that kind of stuff — he’ll do it.”

Nelson also stated the obvious that McGregor has enough green to last for another year, and always has a next big venture in the works to keep him busy. If he didn’t, the rising Icelander revealed, he’d probably find himself in trouble:

“He’s got a lot of money now that keeps him occupied,” Nelson said. “He can do a lot of stuff. I think he’d be all right for a year. He always has something cooking. Right now, it’s the Mayweather fight, and that seems like it’s going to happen. I think he’ll keep himself busy one way or another.

“He needs to keep himself busy in some way, because he’s a pretty hyper guy,” Nelson laughed. “He’s not just sitting around the house. If he wouldn’t have anything to do, he’d probably be up to no good. He’ll always figure something out. He needs excitement.”

Khabib Reveals Why McGregor vs. Mayweather Is A Dangerous Fight For MMA

Like everyone in the fight game, UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov  has heard about Conor McGregor’s intent to box Floyd Mayweather, but the Dagestani has mixed emotions on what a potential super fight between the two could do.

Nurmagomedov discussed his thoughts on a Mayweather vs. McGregor showdown on Saturday, saying:

“As a fan, it is a very interesting fight,” Khabib said. “I understand perfectly why it is carried out. It is guaranteed to bring the organizers a lot of money. Such an event the world of martial arts is not yet known.”

“But in truth, for MMA it is a very dangerous fight. We’re close to boxing in terms of popularity ratings. And if the most-promoted fighter the UFC such as McGregor is defeated by a 40-year-old boxer, it would be a blow to the reputation of MMA. But the money apparently outweighs any risks.”

The decorated wrestler most recently was forced to pull out of his scheduled UFC 209 bout with Tony Ferguson. The 28-year-old sambo specialist remains a perfect 24-0, however, and expects to be back in the mix as a contender upon his return.

Nurmagomedov said he expects to return to the Octagon sometime in August or September.

As for McGregor vs. Mayweather, no official deal has been inked, but has been the talk of the fight world ever since the two proposed the idea of such a superfight between boxing and mixed martial arts.

Conor McGregor has had a long-standing bone to pick with the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) ever since he was dealt some stiff sanctions for his infamous water bottle (and Monster cans)-throwing battle with archrival Nate Diaz and his team at a pre-fight press conference for UFC 202.

McGregor has badmouthed the commission on multiple occasions since he was handed his punishment in October, but now, the outspoken champion has actually received some good news. With Nevada perhaps not wanting to miss out on the potential massive payday of McGregor vs. Mayweather, the commission chose to revisit ‘The Notorious” punishment today, reducing it to one sixth of the original $150,000 fine and half of the 50 required community service hours.

McGregor’s original fine was reduced to $75,000 about a week after the shocking $150,000 number – five percent of his $3 million purse for the massively successful card – was first announced in October. He’s now only faced with a $25,000 fine and 25 hours of community service, which also could mean Diaz could appeal his $50,000 fine and 50 hours to be reduced.

According to a report from MMA Fighting’s Shaun Al-Shatti, Nevada Deputy Attorney General Caroline Bateman laid out a “prosed settlement agreement” where she acknowledged that McGregor’s behavior, while inappropriate, didn’t necessarily affect the outcome of his fight with Diaz, like one of the fighters failing for performance-enhancing drugs, for example, would have. Because of that, she determined fining McGregor based ona percentage of his earnings “didn’t really work” and also that it didn’t add up to fine him more just because he made more than other fighters who could be in similar situations.

So with the punishment now a very workable fine and commitment to the community, the doors are clearly opening for McGregor to finally book his oft-discussed boxing match with Mayweather in Las Vegas.

Following a visit with Chechen dictator Ramzan Kadyrov and a stop in the Russian capitol, Floyd “Money” Mayweather has revealed the possible location of a proposed super fight with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor.

Mayweather suggested Moscow as the city to host the much-discussed bout between McGregor and the undefeated boxing legend.

“At the moment we have not signed any papers,” Mayweather said during a press event following a boxing Masterclass. “But I hope that the match will take place in June. I want to give people the spectacle: the MMA world vs. boxing world. This fight can be organized in Moscow. I would choose to Moscow, if I were asked today.”

While Mayweather suggested Moscow as a potential super fight with the brash Irishman, conflicting reports have put the location at the T Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on June 10, a date and location which has been tentatively set for a boxing bout between the two.

Hosting the event in Moscow presents a number of logistical problems, as North American viewership would be profoundly affected due to the time difference.

Mayweather was in Russia and neighboring Chechnya after Chechen dictator and combat sports aficionado Kadyrov invited the boxing legend to visit, as well as to participate in the grand opening of a boxing gym in Moscow.

The undefeated boxer, who retired last year after racking up a perfect 49-0 record, was paid $86,500 for a day’s worth of work, including hosting a boxing class during the grand opening.

With a venue and date potentially booked for a super fight between UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor and undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, hopes are high that this long-anticipated bout will come to fruition.

But UFC President Dana White insisted that the deal is “nowhere near being done” and that there’s no time frame for when such a mega fight would occur.

White’s dismissal of the news comes just days after a report that a date of June 10 had been reserved at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The UFC President further stated that there is “no target date whatsoever” for a potential fight between Mayweather and McGregor, according to TMZ.

McGregor (21-3) is coming off of a TKO victory over former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez, making the Irishman the first UFC fighter to hold two belts in separate weight divisions simultaneously.

Meanwhile, Mayweather retired from boxing after defeating Andre Berto to extend his unbeaten streak to 49-0.

So while fight fans are clamouring for a fight between boxing and MMA’s biggest stars, it appears as if the deal has a ways to go before being finalized.

Nate Diaz Predicts How Conor Would Do Against Floyd Mayweather

Having gone seven rounds between two separate blockbuster for fights with Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz may have some insight on “The Notorious” in a super fight with Floyd Mayweather.

While Diaz went 1-1 against the current lightweight champion, the Irish superstar has set his sights on a boxing match with the legendary undefeated Mayweather. “Money” Mayweather even appeared on ESPN’s Sportscenter detailing his terms of a potential mega fight between MgGregor and Mayweather.

When recently asked who would win the match-up, Diaz surprisingly gave the Irishman a decent chance at getting the job done against Mayweather.

“I think it’s a big publicity stunt, but my take on a boxing match between the two — I think McGregor’s got a good chance to make something happen in (the first) two or three rounds,” Diaz said on “CSN Fights.” “But I think he’s got an amateur style where he’s only got good movement, good punches for 6, 8 minutes, and I think that’s too amateur for Mayweather. I’m just saying he’s got a puncher’s chance — if anything.”

Mayweather himself went on record this week to announce his return from retirement, but only for a fight with McGregor.

With a potential Mayweather vs. McGregor mega fight coming to fruition, the last obstacle would be Dana White and the UFC’s blessing.

McGregor (21-3) has already captured the featherweight and lightweight titles while making his way through the UFC. The Irish superstar’s lone defeat inside the Octagon was to Nate Diaz, who submitted the then-featherweight champ with a rear-naked choke in the second round of their UFC 196 headliner.

Do you think the fight will go down? Do you agree with Nate Diaz in his assessment of a potential Mayweather vs. MgGregor showdown?
