Last night was a big one for Floyd Mayweather. Now retired, ‘Money’ has been focusing a lot of time and energy on the next generation of boxers. Among those promising prospects is Swedish ‘Ripper’ Badou Jack. Facing James DeGale in a highly anticipated unification bout last night, fireworks were delivered. Jack signed to Mayweather promotions four years ago, and since then won the WBC super middleweight title. With the IBF belt in hand, the Brit DeGale also came prepared for war. Fans in Brooklyn, New York were treated to a thrilling 12-round battle.

Trading knockdowns, the two shared some particularly narrow rounds. Scoring the bout 114-112 for DeGale, and 113 even, the judges left the door open for a rematch. Highlights are available at the foot of the article.

Mayweather’s Ringside Comments

True to his nature, Mayweather was promoting yet again, and not only the boxing match featuring his protégé. Responding to questions about the heavily rumoured bout with Conor McGregor, ‘Money’ added more fuel to the fire, as quoted by Bloody Elbow:

“(I) Absolutely (want to fight Conor McGregor). I’m a businessman… We can do some crazy numbers. If it’s Conor McGregor, [coming back] makes sense for me. But if it’s anyone else, it doesn’t make sense. Not for me.”

For the first time since this whole saga began, UFC president Dana White gave the fight some credibility this week. Offering McGregor and Mayweather $25 million plus PPV points, White put out the first legitimate purse.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice

Star power and money fights have taken MMA in a strange direction lately. Aside from the massive pay-per-view draw it would be, it would be interesting to see the MMA vs. boxing story play out.

Here are some of the highlights from Badou Jack vs. James DeGale in New York last night:

Lightweight champion Conor McGregor sent some minor shockwaves through the MMA world last night when news arrived that he had been granted a boxing license in the State of California.

The news was relevant because ‘The Notorious’ has long been linked to a potential boxing super fight with retired great Floyd Mayweather Jr., a bout that many considered a long shot at best to happen despite the insane amount of hype attached. It may have been dealt a glimmer of hope last night, but Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe was quick to speak up and squash the speculation while speaking to ESPN:

“He’s a very good MMA fighter, give credit where it’s due. It’s kind of played out now. Just stop it. The con game is over. Go out there and worry about dominating the UFC because three fights ago he lost, he was quitting. You couldn’t even mention the word quit with Floyd Mayweather.”

According to Ellerbe, McGregor is simply looking to keep the headlines flowing in a time where he was recently stripped of his UFC featherweight championship in order to make Jose Aldo the official champion. He said that he and the whole Mayweather camp know McGregor is under contract with the UFC, and they would never let him get in a boxing ring with Mayweather because of what the result would be:

“It’s all a game. It’s all a calculated effort to gain more fans,” Ellerbe said. “He got a boxing license. Congratulations to him. Conor McGregor can say anything he wants to but he has a boss and his name is [UFC president] Dana White. He is under contract to the UFC and if he wanted to fight Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match he can’t because his bosses wouldn’t allow that to happen. The brass [from WME-IMG] who recently purchased the UFC [for $4 billion earlier this year] are very smart people and they would never — and put this in bold caps — let him step into a boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather because everyone knows what the outcome would be. He would get his ass beat from pillar to post.”

As far as that’s concerned, White issued his own response to Yahoo! Sports, noting that while he didn’t know what the ‘Notorious” next move will be, McGregor is indeed obviously under contract with the UFC:

“I have no idea what Conor is doing,” White told Yahoo Sports when asked his opinion of McGregor obtaining a boxing license. “Conor’s Conor. He does his thing. But he’s under contract to me. Who knows with this guy? Who knows what he is up to. I just let Conor be Conor. And the other thing is, it’s fun to talk about this fight and what might happen, but what commission would let that fight happen? Really, think about that.”

He may no longer be the UFC featherweight champion, but if recent developments turn into something, Conor McGregor may not even be fighting the Octagon for his next bout.

The megastar is reportedly out until May while he awaits the birth of his first child with girlfriend Dee Devlin, and when he does return, it may be inside the boxing ring. ‘The Notorious” management team confirmed to MMA Fighting that he had been issued a boxing license in California today.

The news was soon confirmed with CSAC Director Andy Foster, who stated the opinion that the commission is happy to license McGregor. The Irish knockout artist has long been rumored for a monstrous boxing bout against legendary champ Floyd Mayweather Jr., so Foster believes is a highly skilled boxer in need of a comparable opponent:

“He got a license today and a federal ID. He’s a California boxer now.”

“He’s qualified [as a boxer],” Foster said. “I’d love to see him fight in California. It just needs to be the right opponent. Certainly a high-level opponent. We’re happy to license him. We’re happy he’s a California fighter.”

Indeed, California would be happy McGregor is now a fighter in their state, as any boxing match he’d participate in would certainly brings multiple millions to ‘The Golden State.’ And with ‘The Notorious’ recently proclaiming he wants a stake in the company with new owners WME-IMG, perhaps he’ll be content to make money boxing while his contract with the UFC gets figured out.

After all, that’s a hot topic in the UFC right now. Just earlier today, Georges St-Pierre spearheading a board of five high-profile fighters to form the MMA Athletes Association (MMAAA) in order to help fighters earn the money they deserve for putting their health on the line, among many other things. They would certainly love to have a fighter like Conor McGregor align with their efforts.

In the meantime, will Ireland’s most infamous fighter finally face off with boxing’s biggest and baddest champ?

After a historic victory at this past weekend’s (Nov. 12, 2016) UFC 205, Conor McGregor has a plethora of options awaiting him, and one of the most often talked about, yet least likely options is a potential boxing match between McGregor and retired all-time great Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Apparently some are also comparing the Irish superstar to Mayweather, a comparison “Money” isn’t too pleased with. In fact, the former pound-for-pound king recently spoke on the topic with TMZ Sports:

“I didn’t know Conor McGregor was undefeated, or that he had reigned in MMA for 20 years undefeated, and was world champion in five different weight divisions,” Mayweather said. “That’s something I didn’t know, so I guess you guys are telling me something new. If you say he’s the Floyd Mayweather of the MMA, I’m trying to find out. Have you ever made $300 million in one night? Have You Ever made $100 million in one night? Have you ever made $70 million in one night?”

McGregor did indeed win his second title in a second weight class last weekend with a brutal second round knockout victory over Eddie Alvarez, but “Money” simply feels as if the “Notorious” one shouldn’t be compared to him:

“I’m a legend, a living legend. I gave to the sport of boxing years and years of hard work. It was blood, sweat and tears, I had a tremendous team, a tremendous run. I think it’s time for Conor McGregor to do what he do, but never compare Conor McGregor to me, that’s total disrespect. I’m an elephant and elephants don’t beef with ants. Elephant is so large he don’t even see ants.”

The chance of it actually happening was always next to nothing, but it seems like the prospect of a Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather bout just won’t seem to go away.

It was close to being on the verge of gone, with Mayweather recently stating it was time to move on. However, McGregor brought the ridiculous potential super fight up yet again at last week’s UFC 205 press conference, adding that he might move on to face ‘Money’ after he was done with Eddie Alvarez at the UFC’s massive event from New York City.

But UFC President Dana White isn’t buying that. The outspoken exec met up with TMZ Sports (transcribed by Bloody Elbow) to give his opinion that the fight was never happening, and the two don’t actually want to throw down:

In White’s opinion, the fact that the two combatants ruled different sports was one of the main factors of it not happening. And as expected, White deemed it a ruse for the sake of money:

TMZ: “They’ve been talking a lot about this McGregor/Mayweather thing. Do you still think it’s going to happen?”

White: “No. I never thought it was going to happen.”

TMZ: “You never thought it was going to happen?”

White: “No. Two totally different sports!”

White then moved on to remind people McGregor was currently under contract with the UFC, something that means a McGregor vs. Mayweather bout would be difficult to make happen even if the two superstars wanted it to:

TMZ: “Because McGregor and Mayweather seem to want to make it happen, badly.”

White: “They seem to want the money, probably! But I don’t know how bad they actually want to make that a reality. Listen, Conor’s under contract with me. We can start with kicks, punches, and elbows.”

McGregor is set to break his own pay-per-view records when he meets Alvarez at arguably the biggest MMA event of all time on November 12. If he beats “The Underground King” to earn a second UFC title, it’s anyone’s guess as to where ‘The Notorious’ will go next.

Just don’t count on him fighting Mayweather anytime soon, at least according to White.

So this is actually happening then…

The broken record continues to spin, as boxing great Floyd Mayweather and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor play a game of media touch-butt that’s gathering momentum by the day. It al started when ‘The Notorious’ fell out of favour with the UFC brass for missing a single press conference, from there it’s snowballed in to a circus of wild reports and rumours.

But as crazy and unlikely as this all seemed at the beginning, the whole Mayweather vs. McGregor saga labelled ‘MoneyMac’ has slowly started to gain some sort of limited credibility. Both sides confirmed that a proposed fight was in fact being negotiated, and they also threw out some figures, with both men claiming they’d claim a $100 million pay day from their potential boxing match.

Conor McGregor..

One particular report has blown up on the web in the last 24 hours, and it features none other than well know sports caster Colin Cowherd. During his FOX Sports aired segment called ‘The Herd,’ as transcribed by MMAFighting.com, the date has already been set for Mayweather vs. McGregor, as the major networks have got it passed following meetings with the UFC.

“News I believe is gonna break here in about two weeks… I have already booked two rooms, September 17th and 18th in Las Vegas. My intel is Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen. It changed late last week. I got a call…”

alg-floyd-mayweather-jpg

“I got a call, then somebody else sent me something [Sunday] and Saturday. We’ve booked rooms in Vegas. [It’s happening] this September. Mayweather did have a very bad last pay per view gate: 550,000 people, he tries to get two-to-three million. So I think this is the most profitable fight for CBS and Mayweather. CBS has been working with Mayweather for years. That’s why his fights are on Showtime, because CBS owns Showtime. So Les Moonves [President and CEO of CBS] and the CBS peeps have decided, ‘let’s talk to the Fox – UFC peeps’ and you’ve got Fox and CBS, you’ve got UFC, you’ve got boxing, you’ve got Floyd, you’ve got Conor. It’s gonna make a lot of money for people.”

And if Conor McGregor’s latest social media post is anything to go by, he is still stuck on the subject of fighting Floyd Mayweather. Assuming the above report is true, have we seen the last o McGregor in the UFC?
