Cyborg: Ronda Rousey Knew It Was Impossible For Me To Make 135

Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino is finally set to make her UFC debut in a catchweight bout against Leslie Smith at May 14’s UFC 198 from Curitiba, Brazil.

Although it won’t be the long sought upon super fight with former bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey, it is a good sign to see the Brazilian slugger finally make her way over to the Octagon.

One thing to note, however, is that the UFC doesn’t have a featherweight division for female fighters. With that being said, Justino will likely have to continuously fight at catchweights, or find some way to cut down to the 135 pound limit.

While some fighters, including reigning UFC champion Miesha Tate, have expressed their willingness to fight “Cyborg” at a catchweight, Rousey has never seemed to budge.

Recently speaking on the matter, Justino admitted that a fighter can’t be pushed into a fight, although she is hopeful that Rousey will accept a bout at 140 pounds with her upon the “Rowdy” one’s return:

“You know, you can’t push a fighter into a fight, it’s better for them to compete because they want to challenge themselves. I like to challenge myself. I’m an MMA world champ, but I fought the Muay Thai world champ because I like to challenge myself. Maybe I’ll lose, maybe I’ll win, but I’ll be getting better.”

“I think when Ronda comes back to fight, all of the fans want to watch me fight her. She has talked about me in the past, she has pushed the idea of this fight, but after that said I had to make 135lbs to fight her, because she knew it was impossible for me. Now I’m in a 140lbs catchweight division, so if she wants to challenge herself and not just talk, we can make the fight happen.” Justino told Bloody Elbow.

As far as Tate and Holly Holm, another former UFC champion, go, “Cyborg” respects them all, but once again admits that she can’t make these highly intriguing bouts happen herself:

“I respect Holly Holm. She’s a great fighter and she has had big changes in her life now. She’s a good person. Miesha Tate is a good person too. I’m here to fight anyone, but fighters either want to challenge themselves or not, and I can’t change that. I can only control myself and challenge myself, so I just have to focus on May 14th, making 140lbs and fighting Leslie Smith.”

What do you expect from “Cyborg’s” future in the UFC?

It was announced earlier this week that Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino will finally make her UFC debut at May 14’s UFC 198 from Brazil where she’ll face off with Leslie Smith.

While Smith may appear as a rather confusing choice of opponents for the massively hyped Justino’s debut, it turns out that multiple fighters, including former 135-pound champion Holly Holm, turned the fight down.

Smith, however, was relentless in campaigning for the chance:

“You’re damn right I begged,” she recently told MMA Junkie.

“This is the whole reason someone gets into martial arts, so they can find someone who’s the best in the world, challenge them and then come out on top. That’s the reason I’m doing this.”

Now that she has indeed been given the opportunity, “The Peacemaker” plans on making this bout a treat for the fans:

“I’m over here busting my ass to make this the most impressive fight,” she said. “Shoot, this is going to be ‘Fight of the Night.’ This is going to be the most exciting women’s fight of the decade.”

While “Cyborg” will likely emerge as quite a heavy favorite leading up to the fight, Smith assured us that the Brazilian slugger is ‘beatable’:

“‘Cyborg’ is beatable,” she reasoned. “She’s super beatable. She’s not a machine.”

“Any person that walks into a cage, there’s a way to beat them, Smith said. “That’s going to be my job for the next six weeks, to figure out the gameplan to beat her. These aren’t digs at all. It’s just saying there are openings for everybody. I’m going to find the openings.”

How do you see this contest playing out?

Of Course Miesha Tate Wants To Fight Cris Cyborg…

Newly minted UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate will likely make the first defense of her title in a trilogy match with former champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey. A third showdown with Rousey may not be the only lucrative bout waiting for “Cupcake”, however, as she has once again voiced her willingness to fight Invicta FC

Newly minted UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate will likely make the first defense of her title in a trilogy match with former champion “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey.

A third showdown with Rousey may not be the only lucrative bout waiting for “Cupcake”, however, as she has once again voiced her willingness to fight Invicta FC featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino.

Justino, known for her crushing knockout power, has long been considered one of the best female fighters in the world, but has never made her way to the Octagon. That could change very soon, however, as rumors have surfaced indicating that Justino could debut at May’s UFC 198 in Brazil.

While Tate had no official word on “Cyborg’s” status, she did say that she would be interested in a catch weight bout with Justino:

“I’ve been hearing rumors or something that supposedly she’s coming to the UFC, but I’ve been hearing it for such a long time, I just don’t really know. I don’t have that confirmed. But I am open to that fight,” Tate said at a recent Q&A session (Via FOX Sports).

“Maybe doing it at a catchweight at 140. I have nothing but respect for Cyborg. She freaking eats girls for breakfast, so she’s amazing.”

From Tate’s side, the champion claimed that she wouldn’t have much to lose in a fight with “Cyborg”, admitting that she would love to test herself against the sport’s elite:

“It’s like, what do I have to lose in that fight?” Tate said. “I go out there and give it everything I have and if I’m able to take out Goliath, then I am (good). I would love to step in there with someone of her caliber.”

It’s unlikely that Tate will be ready to go again in May, but a clash between she and Justino would undoubtedly be a huge contest.

Would you like to see these two ladies square off in the future?

Cyborg Wants To Fight At UFC 198

Invicta featherweight champion Cris “Cyborg” Justino (15-1, 1 NC) was rumored to fight 135lb champ Tonya Evinger at Invicta FC 17, but that that’s not happening. Evinger is expected to defend her title against Colleen Schneider at the event. Now, Cyborg is looking ahead, and fighting in the UFC is something that she is interested

Now, Cyborg is looking ahead, and fighting in the UFC is something that she is interested in now. In the past, Cyborg wanted the UFC to create a weight division (women’s featherweight) for her and then she would join the promotion. However, the UFC is against doing that.

Cyborg recently explained in a statement that she posted on her website that she wants to fight at the UFC 198 event in Brazil.

“It has been almost 10 years since I last fought in my home country of Brazil.  I am very lucky that over the last decade my Brazilian Fans have continued to support me and my career as I chased my dreams as a world champion, while living and competing in America.”

“This May the UFC will be promoting an event in my hometown of Curitiba, Brazil, a city very rich in fight history.  It would be an honor to return back to the city I was born in, and to step inside of the Octagon with an opportunity to prove myself as one of the best female fighters in the sport.”

Cyborg understands that they do not have her women’s featherweight division so she is asking the fans to tell the UFC who she should fight.

“I know that the UFC does not have my division, which is why I am asking my fans to help make this fight!” Justino said.

“As many of you know I am already a Zuffa contracted athlete despite fighting for Invicta (Fighting Championships). Shannon (Knapp, Invicta FC owner) and Zuffa have a great relationship as you have seen with the sharing of fighters.  If Invicta and the UFC could come to an agreement to let me defend my 145-pound belt in Curitiba it would be an honor,” “Cyborg” told FOX Sports in an exclusive interview.

“I cannot choose my opponent as a champion and so I would accept whoever they felt would make the most exciting fight for my fans.”

UFC 198  takes place on May 14th in Brazil. There is no venue announced for this event as of this writing. The event will be broadcasted on PPV, Fox Sports 1, and UFC Fight Pass.

The UFC has yet to comment publicly on Cyborg’s involvement at the event.
