UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley says he’s putting his rifts with UFC president Dana White behind him to focus on being the best champ he can be.

Woodley, who’s often butted heads with White over his performances, his hot takes on race in MMA and other things, spoke to TMZ Sports to finally end his beef with the boss as he focuses on preparing for his next title defense (via Bloody Elbow):

“I’m squashing everything. I’m focusing on getting the shoulder together. One-by-one, everybody will get these hands. I don’t know the order. I don’t know who’s next. But I never wanted to bounce around and not continue to defend my belt. I’ve been here for a while and I plan on knocking everybody out.”

“I’m going to take a woosa,” Woodley continued. “So if you people want to know about the Dana beef, about the Frankenstein beef, about the Queefington beef, I don’t want to talk about it. I’m focusing on being successful.”

Woodley’s jabs at “Frankenstein” and “Queefington” are in reference to Rafael dos Anjos and Colby Covington, two welterweights who have been hounding Woodley and Dana White to get a title shot as vocally as possible.

In the past, White had called his welterweight champ a “drama queen,” leading to Woodley’s discussion of how black fighters and champions are treated compared to their white counterparts.

Do you see White and Woodley moving past their rift?

10 years ago, Rashad Evans set the template for success for fighters like UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley; an excellent wrestling base with ever-improving boxing, “Suga” was one of the first wrestle-boxers of his time, and used his skills to win the UFC light heavyweight title.

Evans sees a lot of similarities between Woodley and himself, and not just in terms of ability and style. Both men have crossed UFC President Dana White in the past, and Evans says Woodley shouldn’t even bother going down that road.

The former light heavyweight champion broke down his reasoning during an appearance on The MMA Hour this week:

“At this point, he can’t win this because he fights for the UFC. Dana is the president of the UFC, there’s no way he can win this. Feel the way you feel, but you gotta know whenever the conversation comes up that Dana said this — don’t even address it. Don’t go down that road. I took too many years off my fighting career arguing with Dana: trying to fight Shogun, trying to get a fight with this guy, trying to do all this stuff, but at the end of the day, it didn’t matter that much.

“I just lost time. What do you gain from being right to Dana White? Nothing, you lose a lot. Whether you’re right or wrong you lose. Why even play with it if you want to be a fighter — especially when two of your revenue streams are tied to things that he controls.”

Recently, Woodley has butted heads with White over a number of issues, including his performances against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, his take on race relations in MMA, and his outspoken nature in general.

Woodley has a massive platform as a UFC analyst for FOX Sports and has used that platform to go toe-to-toe with the president, which Evans sees as a pointless battle.

Evans mentioned his past rifts with White, specifically his desire to fight Shogun Rua, which never came to fruition, as well as other fights he’s desired but that White ultimately shut down. Evans says his rifts with White seriously affected his career at times, and the same could happen to Woodley, too.

Do you agree with Evans in that Woodley is fighting a losing battle against the most powerful man MMA – whether he’s right or wrong?

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor was all over the headlines again last weekend. On January 28, McGregor sat with Ariel Helwani for a ‘scripted’ pay-per-view interview. With 5,000 fans in attendance in Manchester, ‘The Notorious’ offered a PPV stream for fans who wanted to watch live. Before even sitting down to start the interview, McGregor had blasted his employers on Instagram. His “F*ck the UFC” post was not welcomed by Dana White, who warned the Irishman about the pitfalls of going against the UFC.

During the interview, McGregor went even further, claiming he wouldn’t be fighting in the UFC next. Referencing the Ali Act, ‘The Notorious’ said there was no way the UFC could stop him from boxing. Again the subject of Floyd Mayweather was discussed, and McGregor said this would be his next fight. Clearly making a stand against the UFC, McGregor’s comments were defiant. Some fans in attendance seem to have been just as riled up as Dana White, as per a report on Bloody Elbow.

Brawl

Detective Inspector John Stainton from Stretford Police Station said: “There was a lot of confusion about what happened and how many people were involved in last night’s fighting but we are now clear that there were a maximum of around 20 people involved in the disorder.

“We are appealing for anyone who saw anything to get in touch as soon as possible. Behaviour like we saw last night is not acceptable and I’m only thankful that there weren’t any more serious injuries.”

One witness said: “Hi, just been past EventCity and there is all police in the car park, part of it is cordoned off, quite a few police vans and cars.”

What’s Next?

Having already stripped McGregor of one belt, don’t be surprised if the UFC begins suggesting the same for the lightweight belt. If ‘The Notorious’ does go against his employers, we know from past experience the UFC can seek extreme measures. With all the talk of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson, few expected Conor McGregor’s next opponent to be his employers. That said, he also claimed Dana White was ‘not his boss’ during the now infamous tirade.

UFC president Dana White draws the line in the sand…

Scoring the biggest win of his career at UFC 205, Conor McGregor put himself in a very powerful position. Claiming the second belt in a record-setting simultaneous championship reign, McGregor’s victory over Eddie Alvarez was absolutely huge. Defeating ‘The Silent Assassin’ was much more than a championship fight, it was a major win in the Irishman’s battle outside the octagon. For some time now we’d been discussing the possibility of ‘The Notorious’ becoming bigger than the promotion. During UFC 205 and in the time since, that’s now unequivocal.

Obvious fights against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson were discussed, but there was more at play. Now the lightweight/featherweight champion had all the marbles, and he doesn’t plan on sharing. Taking 10 months off of fighting didn’t keep McGregor from making his next moves. After the UFC stripped his 145-pound title, McGregor fired his own shots back. Enter the talk of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, and the rift with the UFC is apparent.

One Of These Guys Became Featherweight Champ In 2016

Excuse the heading, but the point is illustrated well. In a blatant attempt to save UFC 206, the promotion stripped McGregor’s belt and promoted Jose Aldo to full champion. Putting the interim belt on the line for Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis, the UFC had shown their cards. McGregor’s response was to reveal he won’t be coming back to the UFC next, whether they like it or not. Referencing the Ali Act in MMA, ‘The Notorious’ said there’s nothing the UFC can do to stop him from boxing Floyd Mayweather. Unsurprisingly, UFC president Dana White is not amused:

New Owners, Star Power

WME-IMG, who took hold of the UFC in 2016 for $4 billion, have walked in to a storm. With a very big loan to pay back, they’ll need every ounce of star power to get the ball rolling in 2017. Unfortunately for the promotion, McGregor was more of a draw in one year on his own than the entire UFC roster in 2014. As the now undeniable stand-off between the UFC and McGregor ramps up, who will be the victor in this war of dollars?
