FORT HOOD, Texas – In the grand scheme of things, it’s just a sport, just one night of entertainment.

But the UFC’s second “Fight for the Troops” show on Saturday meant a night away from the stresses of military service – stresses most will never understand. About 3,200 troops attended the show, which was set up in a temporary arena inside a hangar on an air strip – tanks and helicopters just a couple hundred feet away from the Octagon.

The troops posed for pictures with Chuck Liddell and Bruce Buffer and Dana White and the Octagon Girls and Stitch and every fighter walking past – and most stopped to shake hands, sign autographs and get a snapshot, win or lose. They ate burritos at a tailgate outside the hangar. They cheered and booed the same as they would if they were in any other arena.

FORT HOOD, Texas – George Roop knows the meaning of “home sweet home.”

After living and training for a year in Las Vegas, the UFC featherweight moved back to his native Tucson, Ariz., last year not long before his fight against Chan Sung Jung – a fight that got the MMA world’s attention, big time, thanks to his Knockout of the Year-candidate kick to the Korean Zombie’s head.

In October 2009, Roop had to endure the death of one of his three children – his 7-year-old son Julian, who had battled seizures practically since birth. He fought a month later, earning his way into the WEC after the UFC cut him loose earlier in the year.

After weeks of speculation, Dana White on Tuesday finally answered what had become the biggest mystery in MMA.

The next coaches of “The Ultimate Fighter” will be Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos, the UFC president told members of the media on a conference call. The two heavyweights will then meet “in June, definitely 100 percent,” White said – likely on an as-yet unannounced pay-per-view expected to take place June 11 in Vancouver.

Lesnar is the former UFC heavyweight champion, but lost his title at UFC 124 in October to Cain Velasquez. Dos Santos was expected to get the next shot at Velasquez as the division’s top contender. But with the new champ on the shelf with a shoulder injury, the Brazilian will instead act as a coach, then stay busy afterward with a fight against Lesnar – putting his top contender status in jeopardy in the process.

White said with Velasquez out, there would not be an interim heavyweight title. Instead, the winner of dos Santos-Lesnar will be the No. 1 contender for the most coveted title in the sport.
