Former UFC featherweight title challenger Ricardo Lamas is set to make his Octagon return.

It has been announced that Lamas will be fighting in the co-main event of UFC Argentina next month (November 17, 2018) from the Mary Teran de Weiss Stadium in Buenos Aires. He will be fighting UFC veteran Darren Elkins.

Elkins recently had a six-fight win streak snapped against Alexander Volkanovski. Volkanovski defeated Elkins via unanimous decision in July. The 34-year-old will now have the opportunity to bounce back with a potential win over one of the division’s biggest names.

As for Lamas, he’s currently on a two-fight losing skid. His last outing resulted in a split decision loss to Mirsad Bektic. Lamas’ last win was against Jason Knight in July of last year, which he won via first-round knockout. He desperately needs a victory over Elkins in order to get back on track for a title hunt.

UFC Argentina is headlined by a welterweight contest between Santiago Ponzinibbio and Neil Magny. Check out the updated card below:

The official UFC rankings have been updated following last weekend’s (Sat., July 14, 2018) UFC Fight Night 133 from the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho.

Although Junior dos Santos headlined the event with an uneventful decision win over debuting heavyweight Blagoy Ivanov (for which “JDS” rose one spot to No. 7), perhaps a more significant change on the rankings was the return of former three-time featherweight title challenger Chad Mendes, who re-debuted on the rankings at No. 7 following his first-round technical knockout over Myles Jury in his long-awaited return from a two-year USADA suspension.

“Money” may have a Top 10 spot, yet it may not be enough considering how dominant he looked in his return against a veteran over two-and-a-half years out of the cage. True, he may have lost back-to-back fights versus Conor McGregor and Frankie Edgar – and the time off probably did him some good – but the Team Alpha Male star brings it every time out and has only lost to true legends of the featherweight division. With another win, he should find himself in the top five and above soon.

Also at featherweight, rising prospect Alexander Volkanovski made his debut at No. 11 after beating previous No. 10 Darren Elkins, who fell to No. 13.

The UFC’s FOX-aired cards seem to be getting a good deal smaller in scope and quality since the UFC signed over television broadcasting rights to FOX.

The first event featured a heavyweight title fight, something that would entice perhaps more casual fans to eventually order a PPV.

Now, the main cards are extremely top-heavy at best, and not noteworthy at worst. Saturday night was a typical FOX card in 2017/2018; some bright spots and a whole lot of waiting and drawn out fights in between.

Regardless, the UFC landscape has changed again, with a once-great middleweight re-emerging as a top contender and a slew of other changes to the chess game that makes up the UFC weight divisions.

Where do the fighters of UFC on FOX 27 go from here? We broke that down in our list of the five best fights to make following UFC on FOX 27:

5. Andre Fili vs. Doo Ho Choi

Fili and Choi are two solid but young featherweights who are looking to establish themselves in the division with as much consistency as they can muster.

Choi faltered a bit in his last bout, dropping a TKO loss to veteran Jeremy Stephens, while Fili got back on track with a close split decision over Dennis Bermudez in the UFC on FOX 27 co-main event.

Both men have shown flashes of brilliance during their UFC careers, but have been dealt some stiff competition given their ages and experience.

A fight between the two is perfect for this point and time in their respective careers, and a win for either man woud put them that much closer to the consistency needed to make it to a title shot in a stacked division like featherweight.

After a back-and-forth first frame that Choi probably took on greater volume, Stephens got the biggest win of his career in the second. Leg kicks and occasional punching combinations were the names of the game for the two hard-hitting featherweights. Choi opened the second with a flush front kick to “Lil Heathen’s” face, and that set off a temporary wild brawl. Stephens started to find a home for his shots and found success pressuring Choi backwards. A looping right hand connected behind Choi’s ear and sent him to the deck. Stephens pounced with a ruthless ground assault of punches and elbows, forcing the ref to jump in to save Choi. For their efforts, Stephens and Choi go home with an extra $50,000 and Fight of the Night.

Insanely tough featherweight standout Darren Elkins gave Michael Johnson a rude welcome to the division with a second-round rear-naked choke and so banked an extra $50,000 for Performance of the Night. As has become typical for “The Damage”, Elkins withstood a beating in the first frame from the faster, crisper striker in Johnson. But Elkins, as always, refused to quit. He caught a second-round leg kick for his first takedown, and Johnson soon looked imperiled. Unable to get Elkins off of him, Johnson exploded and turned, giving up his back in the process. Elkins sunk in his hooks, and the choke soon followed.

The other Performance of the Night bonus went to Marco Polo Reyes, who greeted “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series” alum Matt Frevola with a first-round knockout. “Steamrolla” was aggressive to a fault from the outset and never got to try his wrestling and grappling, where most thought he would have an advantage. Frevola waded forward behind winging power hooks, only to be met by sharp counters from the Mexican Reyes. The Entram Gym export hurt Frevola with a right hand and multiple left hooks before closing the show with one more right hand that sent Frevola slumping to the canvas. Reyes collected an extra $50,000 for his handiwork.

Michael Johnson is looking to end a slide in his MMA career, so he’s joined the ranks of fighters choosing to cut down a class in an effort to reinvent themselves.

Johnson will make his featherweight debut this Sunday in St. Louis against Darren Elkins in what will be the first-ever trip to 145 pounds in his UFC career.

”The Menace” went in depth to ESPN about how the weight cut is going and the drawbacks to having to lose so much weight:

”I have nightmares about it every night. You have no idea. My first fight at 155 [pounds], I got stuck trying to lose the last three pounds. I couldn’t get them off.

“That’s what I keep having flashbacks of when thinking about getting down to 145. What if I get stuck?”

Johnson is currently coming off of a two-fight losing streak at 155 pounds, having just lost to Justin Gaethje by TKO in 2017’s Fight of the Year” after getting thoroughly dominated by Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The move to featherweight is uncharted territory for Johnson, who was reportedly always a big lightweight, cutting from between 170 to 180 pounds to make 155 pounds.

But Johnson feels like he’s done at lightweight for now, as a new weight class presents new opportunities in terms of a title shot:

”I’ve spent my time, paid my dues in the lightweight division. I’m not looking to work my way up [slowly]. I want to come in here and beat [Elkins] who is on a nice win streak, make a statement, and then get in there on a No. 1 contender fight.”

Elkins himself is coming off of a decision win over Dennis Bermudez that was preceded by an improbable comeback upset victory over Mirsad Bektic, whom he viciously knocked out after taking a beating for two rounds.

Johnson and Elkins will throw down on Sunday during UFC Fight Night 124 in Saint Louis.
