UFC Welterweight contender Belal Muhammad wants his vengeance.

Muhammad had the opportunity of a lifetime when he took on #3 ranked Leon Edwards earlier this month.

However, the chance to pop into talks of title contention would be stood up after an accidental eye poke brought a swift end to Muhammad’s first main event.

Muhammad would cry in pain on the mat, with tears of blood streaked down his face. Referee Herb Dean would call off the fight, dubbing it as a no-contest for both men. Something ventured, nothing gained for Edwards and Muhammad that night.

Edward had hopes of getting a rematch against reigning champ Kamaru Usman despite the controversial result. However, the title shot would be given to Jorge Masvidal for a second time at UFC 261 on April 24th.

Outside of the new title headliner, the top of the division is not matched up. This is where Belal Muhammad wants to fit in. Having the fight with Edwards taken away from him due to injury, Muhammad obviously wants to get that one back, next.

“I got Ramadan coming up in April,” Muhammad told MMA Junkie. “I’m still gonna be training during it, but I’m hoping maybe June. June works out perfectly for me. I literally just had three back-to-back camps in a row so it’s like I want that, but it’s one of those where if they’re willing to do the rematch and they want to do it sooner, I’m healthy enough to do it sooner.”

In the aftermath of the eyepokes and the announcement of UFC 261, Edwards has set his sights on fighting Colby Covington. Covington hasn’t much interest in the fight, however Edwards continue to campaign for “Chaos.”

Muhammad isn’t the least bit surprised.

“(What) was pissing me off more than anything was the way he was being so dismissive of it. Like, ‘Oh yeah, I won the first round, all the other rounds would have been like that.’ No, it was one round and it’s a five-round fight. I’m literally a guy that picks it up as the fight goes on. His way of thinking is stupid honestly because if Dana White really said, ‘If Leon wins against Belal, he’s next in line for a title shot.’ So, if I’m so easy, why don’t you just come and take this easy fight?”

“It’s gonna be the same paycheck that you’re gonna get to fight somebody else.” Muhammad added. “There’s literally nobody else for you to fight. None of these other guys are trying to fight you, so this fight makes sense. It has a story behind it now so even in the UFC’s eyes, they can just build it back up as that.”

Riding off the momentum of headlining his first UFC event, Muhammad is hopeful for the future. While his next opponent may not be Edwards, he is in confident he can still reel in a big-name opponent.

“Obviously I want a big fight,” Muhammad said. “I feel like I still earned a main event spot just being willing to take a fight on three weeks’ notice. A guy I feel like would be a good main event spot with me is Demian Maia. He’s top 10 and I feel like I deserve somebody top 10 coming off four wins in a row, so I think that fight makes sense. I haven’t gone against a real grappler in the UFC yet, so fighting a grappler, it excites me. I wanna just show that side of me and to fight a legend like Demian Maia would be cool.”

Carlos Condit Confirms Fighting Spirit ‘Never Really Left’

After an illustrious 15-year career in MMA spanning 40 fights, former interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit publicly questioned if he still belonged fighting the best in the world following a shockingly rapid first-round submission loss to Demian Maia in his last bout in August 2016.

But when ‘The Natural Born Killer’ asked UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby for a fight on social media, the fight game saw the flame of one of its most exciting mainstays seemingly lit yet again, and during a time when the UFC needs it most.

Condit was subsequently booked for a return bout versus longtime contender Neil Magny at December 30’s UFC 219, signifying his still-burning commitment to the gladiator sport upon which he’s made such an amazing impact.

Perhaps looking to clear the air concerning his lengthy break, Condit discussed the return of his desire to compete during a recent appearance on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, confirming his fighting spirit had never left but noting that his understandably down state lead to some disappointment in his performance.

“That feeling never really left honestly, man,” Condit said. “I’m a fighter, this is what I love to do, there’s obviously a lot of different factors that go into making decisions. And as important as what I’m doing with my life and career and all that stuff. I think I wanted to fight, I’ll probably want to fight until the day I’m dead.

“At the time, [I was] feeling very dejected, disappointed,” Condit said. “And I’m a competitive person and I obviously fell short in, in my eyes, a really sh*tty way, because even fights I lost in the past in the UFC, I’ve still gone there and fought my ass off and put on hell of a show, And that fight I wasn’t able to do that and that added to the sting.”

A member of Albuquerque’s famed Jackson-Wink MMA, Condit also described how he spent his time away from the cage pursuing other business ventures. But after awhile, his competitive side continued to urge him to compare his skills to those of the other best fighters in the world.

And ultimately, fighting is what he loves, he said, and there are bills to pay, meaning it’s time for him to return:

“I’ve been debating and kind of getting back in the gym here and there and seeing where I’m at against other competitive fighters, and I did not, I was not sure; I was on the fence for a long time.

“There’s a lot of different factors,” Condit said. “I still love to fight, I still love to train, I love the process, I love the people I’ve surrounded myself with, I love my team and also, honestly there’s a financial piece to this, too. This is my trade, this is what I do. I didn’t go to college. I don’t have a whole lot of options as far as backup plans. I’ve got bills to pay and mouths to feed, so, let’s strap up the gloves and get to it.”

Despite a deservedly elite reputation thanks to an incredible 28 finishes in 30 wins, the No. 7-ranked Condit has a long and winding road back to a title shot in the notoriously rough welterweight waters.

He’s lost five out of his last seven bouts, even if many still believe his split decision loss to Robbie Lawler and his unanimous decision defeat to Johny Hendricks should have gone his way, in addition to him losing to current champion Tyron Woodley due to a torn ACL.

That said, he’s also fought the absolute best without hesitation, and most of the time, he took them to the limit. A few classic Condit wins could see him back in the title hunt right away, and perhaps a bout versus the winner of UFC 217’s Stephen Thompson vs. Jorge Masvidal tilt could be in the works while Robbie Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos battle to see who takes on the currently injured Woodley at December’s UFC on FOX 26.

Tyron Woodley Reacts To RDA’s Title Shot Talk

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos made quite a statement last night (Sat. September 9, 2017) when he made quick work of Neil Magny at the UFC 215 pay-per-view (PPV), as the Brazilian campaigns for a shot at Tyron Woodley’s welterweight title.

Woodley served as an analyst on FS1 for the fights and didn’t seem to take “RDA” too seriously after calling the champ out, joking about which belts he’d be willing to give to dos Anjos (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Well, I’ve got a Gucci belt you can have,” Woodley said. “I’ve got a Louis Vuitton belt you can have, but the welterweight gold, the 14 pounds, brother – it’s going to be a long time before I give that up.”

Woodley admitted that dos Anjos’ performance against Magny was in impressive won, but doesn’t think it was quite enough to earn him a shot at the 170-pound title. With two more impressive welterweight victories under his belt, then “The Chosen One” will consider stepping into the Octagon against the Brazilian:

“I didn’t take (the callout) personally,” Woodley said. “All I’m saying is there are a lot of guys in my division. They always put them in front of me, and everyone thinks they have the solution to beat me. But I think I’m the most well-rounded fighter. I punch the hardest in the UFC of all the fighters. And he’s a great fighter. He’s a former world champion. I do think one or two more fights in the division, with a great performance like he had this evening, we will see him on the other side of the octagon. At that point, we’ll be ready to roll.”

In the meantime, Woodley also expressed interest in jumping up to his fellow FS1 analyst Michael Bisping’s championship weight class of middleweight, possibly teasing a superfight between the pair (or Georges St-Pierre):

“I want to fight at middleweight,” Woodley said. “So, I’m thinking about taking a trip up to middleweight.”
