Jorge Masvidal Would Fight Teammate Tyron Woodley: I’ve Got Kids To Feed

With a lengthy resume dating back to early 2000s era of MMA, UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal may finally be fighting for a title shot in the world’s biggest MMA outfit when he meets surging No. 3 competitor Demian Maia on the main card of May 13’s massive UFC 211 event from Dallas, Texas.

If ‘Gambred’ can shock the MMA world and hand Maia his first loss since February of 2014, he could potentially find himself in a welterweight title bout against champion and American Top Team (ATT) stablemate Tyron Woodley, whom he used to train with in Coconut Creek, Florida. However, none of that is even close to guaranteed with Conor McGregor lurking in the shadows of an uncertain fighting future.

Regardless, if and when Masvidal does get lucky enough to face “The Chosen One” for the belt, he’s willing to battle his ATT teammate. “Gamebred” told Submission Radio (courtesy of Bloody Elbow) that he’s known Woodley since his days as a lightweight, where the champ helped him refine his wrestling skills:

“I’ve known Woodley for nine-plus years, ten-plus years. We’ve worked out together plenty. He’s one of the guys who used to slam me all around the place. I was at 155, he was at 170 pounds and he was just the wrestler that is a superpower. So that was one of the dudes that got my wrestling a little better from going with guys like that. He knows where my strengths are, I know where his strengths are.”

But with Woodley now training almost exclusively with Milwaukee’s Roufusport (even though he does own an ATT affiliate gym in his native St. Louis), Masvidal revealed n a recent interview on ‘UFC Tonight’ that neither he nor the champ had any problem fighting each other, likening their potential eventual meeting to that of a famous basketball analogy:

“No (issues fighting). Not on my end, or at Tyron Woodley’s end. We’re both good friends. I get along just fine with Woodley. He’s actually showed me a lot things in the past, and I’ve worked with him in the past training to help him get ready to fight. There’s no hard feelings if me and him had to scrap.

“I’m LeBron and he’s Dwyane Wade. We split up teams, we meet in the Finals,” he said. “We’re going sit out because we were teammates at one point? Hell no. I’m here to get this money. I’ve got kids to feed.”

It’s a fair point from the suddenly surging ‘Gamebred,’ who suddenly emerged as a legitimate threat in the 170-pound division by shocking demolishing Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 22 in Denver this year.

If he can buck the odds again and send arguably the most talented submission specialist in MMA to a defeat, he’ll no doubt deserve a bout with his old teammate Woodley.

And that’s just fine with one of the game’s old-school prizefighters.

Jorge Masvidal has made himself a name along with the top contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division. Following two split decision losses to Ben Henderson and Lorenz Larkin, Masvidal has put together three straight wins including stoppages over Jake Ellenberger and Donald Cerrone. Now, he is set for a big fight with Demian Maia, who has been on fire as late, at UFC 211.

“Just how people were surprised about my striking against Cowboy, they’re going to be even more surprised by my grappling in this fight,” Masvidal said on BJ Penn Radio (transcription by MMA Mania). “You can’t beat a guy like Maia unless you can grapple at that level. And most of the dudes – especially the guys he’s fought – are not at that level of defensive wrestling or defensive jiu jitsu to beat him. I know that I am. I know that in every position we could come to in MMA, I’m going to out-position this guy. I’m going to out-will him, and then he’s going to give in to the fatal blow.”

Only Nate Marquardt has been able to stop Maia over the course of his thirty-fight career, but according to Masvidal, he believes that he is going to finish Maia and he doesn’t even see their fight going into the final round.

“I’m going to kick his ass, really bad,” said Masvidal. “It doesn’t make it through the third round. I don’t know if it’s the first, I don’t know if it’s the second, but it doesn’t make it through the third.”

UFC 211 takes place May 13th at the American Airlines Center. The night’s main card will air live on pay-per-view while the prelims will air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. Stipe Miocic vs. Junior Dos Santos for the heavyweight title will headline this event while Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Jessica Andrade for the strawweight title will serve as the co-main event.

Georges St-Pierre is making his Octagon return at 185 pounds, forgoing a return at his former championship division of welterweight, and nobody is happier about that decision than Demian Maia.

The Brazilian is currently on a six-fight win streak over names such as Neil Magny, Gunnar Nelson, Matt Brown, and Carlos Condit. Maia has finished three of those bouts by utilizing his wicked jiu-jitsu skills that have made him one of the most exciting fighters to watch as of late.

The No. 3-ranked welterweight was primed to challenge for the 170-pound throne following his win over Condit in August, but after the whole ordeal between champion Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson at UFC 205 he was forced to wait a bit longer. Now Maia has accepted a bout with Jorge Masvidal to keep him busy, where the winner is likely to challenge ‘The Chosen One’ for the welterweight title next after his majority decision win over ‘Wonderboy’ at UFC 209.

Had St-Pierre made the decision to return to welterweight, however, it may have made the Brazilian’s current situation all the more frustrating, landing him in a spot similar to that of No. 1-ranked middleweight Yoel Romero who will now have to wait for his respective title opportunity thanks to ‘GSP.’

Maia recently told MMA Junkie that he is very thankful that the Canadian star didn’t decide to come back to 170 pounds, making his situation just a bit more bearable:

“I’m glad they didn’t set up his fight in my weight category,” Maia said.

Demian Maia vs. Ryan LaFlare HighlightsNow Maia will challenge Masvidal on a stacked UFC 211 card from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas on May 13th. While he was holding out hope that he would instead receive a title shot the next time he stepped into an Octagon, Maia didn’t hesitate to accept the bout with the No. 6-ranked ‘Gamebred’:

“I really wanted to fight for the title, and that’s the fight I wanted to take for sure,” he said. “It was something that was on my shoulders – I was always waiting and nobody was giving me a clear perspective on what is happening. So when they finally said, ‘You need to take this fight,’ we finally solved this situation, and it was also relieving for me.”
