Claressa Shields

Undefeated professional boxing world champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and recent mixed martial arts newcomer, Claressa Shields has shared her thoughts on last weekend’s WBC heavyweight championship trilogy bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder — describing the pair’s trio of tussles as one of the greatest trilogies in the sport’s long and esteemed history.

Shields, who is a three-division world champion, has clutched the likes of WBC, WBA, and IBF world titles, and scooped two separate gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 summer Olympic Games in London and Rio de Janeiro, respectively at the middleweight limit.

The Flint, Michigan native recently made her long-awaited transition to the professional mixed martial arts realm, signing a multi-year deal to link up with the PFL (Professional Fighters League).

Shields made her professional and promotional debut at PFL 4 in June in Atlantic City, New Jersey — stopping Brittany Elkin with ground strikes in the third round. Shields was scheduled to return at two separate events under the organization’s banner back in August until she was finally penciled in to match with Abigail Montes at PFL 10 on October 27. coming.

Claressa Shields Heaps Praise On Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder Championship Trilogy

Despite her transition to the mixed martial arts world, Shields has still kept her ear close to the surface in regards to the boxing world, reflecting on last week’s trilogy bout between Fury and Wilder. And described their trio of clashes as one of the best trilogies in the sport’s antiquity — praising the heart on display from both.

Of course, I was going for Deontay Wilder, he showed so much heart,” Claressa Shields told LowKick MMA reporter, Darnel Giovani. “Tyson Fury, man — just a very, very good boxer — very, he got a lot of heart too. He was the better man, you know, on the third fight. But I was still kinda hurt for Deontay Wilder because that’s who I was cheering for, that’s who I wanted to win.

It was a great trilogy, you know what I mean,” Claressa Shields continued. “I’m tryna think of guys who I’ve seen in boxing, fight three times, and I think that that was definitely, one of the best that I’ve seen.”

Despite the eleventh round knockout loss to Fury, Shields has claimed that Wilder should be proud of his performance, and believes he showed many improvements and can build off that fight.

Deontay can build off of that — off of that performance, you know,” Claressa Shields said. “From the last fight, I think with Fury when he got knocked out in the seventh round, to being knocked out in the eleventh. I mean, he showed so many improvements. The only thing he needs to fix is his gas tank and just some better defense. But other than that, he made so many great improvements and that’s down to his hard work and to his new coach, Malik Scott.

Dana White Says Fury-Wilder Trilogy Was ‘Exactly What Boxing Needed’

The final fight in the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder trilogy was such a success, even Dana White was forced to give them a tip of the cap.

Fury and Wilder met for the third and presumably last time on Saturday night. ‘The Gypsy King’ was able to defend his WBC and The Ring titles with an 11th-round knockout. The fight was a back-and-forth affair that saw both men get dropped. It’s already being proclaimed by some as the greatest heavyweight title fight in the history of boxing.

Of course, White has had more than his fair share of grievances about the state of boxing and the promoters who run it. However, even he was forced to give credit where credit is due following the epic match (h/t MMA Junkie).

“I thought it was awesome,” White told reporters at the UFC Apex following Tuesday’s Contender Series event. “Going into it, my thought process was, ‘For what? Why?’ (Joshua) just got beat, and why do that? You know why? Because boxing needed that fight. It was an incredible heavyweight fight. I thought both guys fought their asses off and for Fury to come in 277 pounds and fight the way that he fought, get knocked down, get back up, keep fighting – it’s just exactly what boxing needed, so (I’m) glad it happened. Congratulations to both of them, everybody involved and the sport of boxing.”

White himself has dabbled with the idea of going into the boxing business, even going so far as to trademark ‘Zuffa Boxing’. He often spoke about entering the boxing world and fixing the “broken model” that he claimed plagued the sport. Unfortunately, we never got a chance to see what he would do with his own promotion, as he effectively put a halt in his plans in late 2020.

Are you surprised to see Dana White giving boxing credit? Will we ever see him run his own boxing promotion?

Gane Looks To Model Fury’s Win Over Wilder In Upcoming Ngannou Fight

UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane is hoping to follow in the footsteps of WBC and The Ring Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury when he meets Francis Ngannou at UFC 270. UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane is hoping to follow in the footsteps of WBC and The Ring Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury when he meets Francis Ngannou at UFC 270.

As with Gane’s next Octagon appearance, Fury was matched up with a powerhouse in his last outing. For the third time, he faced Deontay Wilder inside the ring. The pair first collided inside Los Angeles’ Staples Center in 2018. After surviving a late knockdown, many expected “The Gypsy King” to have his hand raised. Instead, the fight was controversially ruled a split-decision draw.

The two heavyweight stars ran it back last February at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. In the rematch, Fury dominated throughout and became champion via a seventh-round TKO. The Englishman had his sights set on a blockbuster clash with his compatriot Anthony Joshua this year. However, Wilder successfully put a stop to those plans by forcing a contractually obliged trilogy with Fury.

Last weekend, the rivals met for the third time. They closed their feud with one of the best heavyweight boxing matches in recent memory. Despite eating the full force of Wilder’s power, and being knocked down more than once in the fourth round, Fury recovered and was on top for the remainder of the contest. He finished “The Bronze Bomber” with a brutal KO in the 11th frame.

In the aftermath of the fight, elite UFC heavyweight Gane gave his take on the incredible Las Vegas showdown combat sports fans were treated to on Saturday. During an appearance on Submission Radio, “Bon Gamin” praised both men, but suggested he wasn’t surprised to see Fury’s hand raised given his immense fight IQ.

“It was really crazy. It was really a big fight, more than the first one and the second one. And it was really tight. It was really tight at the beginning. But for me, when you have a fight IQ and this kind of technical skill from Tyson Fury, for me it’s really normal [to see] him have his hand up.”

Discussing how Fury dealt with Wilder’s famed power, which even “The Gypsy King” acknowledged was harder than he could ever strike, Gane asserted that smart, fast, and technical fighters can often find the path to victory against the most brutal hitters. The interim champ is hoping to use Fury’s latest success as an example as he prepares to face the most powerful puncher in the UFC.

“Sometimes… I hope it’s going to be the same for me with Francis, but sometimes when the guy in front of you is really quick and are really smart, every time they have the solution [to their opponent’s power]. I hope it’s going to be the same for me and I think that helped Gypsy for real… I hope I’m gonna manage [the fight] very well like Tyson Fury, I hope.”

Gane and Ngannou are set to collide in a unification bout at UFC 270. In what will be the opening pay-per-view of 2022, the promotion will be hoping to begin the year with some heavyweight fireworks.

Do you think Ciryl Gane has what it takes to dethrone Francis Ngannou at UFC 270?

Everyone has their turn-ons, and for Sean O’Malley, that is apparently watching epic heavyweight boxing fights.

Like the rest of us, O’Malley was unbelievably impressed by the all-out war put on by Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury in their trilogy fight. The two heavyweight champions were both dropped multiple times in the fight, with each man getting hurt. In the end, Fury was able to finish the fight in the 11th round with a brutal knockout after overwhelming Wilder with a barrage of punches over the course of the contest.

As later revealed by O’Malley, it seems that “Suga” was a little happier than most people at how the fight went. Speaking in a recent episode of his podcast, he said that he liked it so much that he felt the need to pleasure himself through every round, just because of how intense the action was.

One of the sickest fights, probably the sickest boxing fight I’ve seen. I was J-ing off every round,” O’Malley said (h/t MiddleEasy).

“(Wilder) is a gangster, dude. That’s gangster. To be knocked down, then knock down Fury, and then get knocked down seven more times before the fight’s over. Just get up every time, scary.”

This was certainly an odd admission from Sean O’Malley, although it is somewhat relatable given the circumstances of what transpired. After all, many people were considering Tyson Fury vs Deontay Wilder 3 was one of the best fights of the year and one of the greatest heavyweight fights of all time.

With the momentum swings and nonstop action from start to finish, this truly was one of the most exciting boxing matches to take place in a long time. That said, it is probably a bit easier for someone to enjoy watching the fight if they are doing so while keeping their pants on.

Daniel Cormier Says Fury Benefited From ‘Crazy Slow’ Count After Wilder Knocked Him Down

Daniel Cormier

Daniel Cormier voiced his displeasure after seeing what he believed to be Tyson Fury receiving a slow count after being knocked down by Deontay Wilder in their epic trilogy fight at the T-Mobile Arena on Saturday evening.

‘The Bronze Bomber’ was dropped inside three rounds but rallied back in the fourth frame, landing two monstrous punches to secure knockdowns of his own that could’ve ended the fight in the opinion of Cormier if referee Russell Mora wasn’t “crazy slow” with his 10-count.

“I agree with @andreward the count was crazy slow! He isn’t supposed to stop counting to tell deontay to go to his corner. #FuryvsWilderIII,” Cormier wrote on social media.

The former dual-weight UFC champion seems to be lacking when it comes to his knowledge of boxing rules. According to Boxing guidelines, the referee should stop the count if a fighter moves away from his neutral corner.

After scoring his first knockdown, Wilder was told to go to a neutral corner but instead went to his own, something that could’ve and should’ve delayed the count.

On the second knockdown, the referee stopped his count at five to order Wilder to a neutral corner. The process took a couple of seconds before he continued his count at six (as he should), something that upset Cormier and other people supporting Wilder.

Fury got up before the count of eight and went on to dominate the fight. ‘The Gypsy King’ put a beating on Wilder before eventually stopping the former WBC heavyweight champion in the 11th round to earn his second successive win over the American. The pair also fought to a draw in 2018, although many believe Wilder was the beneficiary of wacky scorecards in that fight.

Do you agree with Daniel Cormier? Did Tyson Fury benefit from a “crazy slow” count?
