Heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder is more than willing to throw hands with Francis Ngannou, but only under one condition.

Currently, ‘The Bronze Bomber’ is gearing up for a return to the squared circle on December 23 as part of the Day of Reckoning doubleheader with Anthony Joshua vs. Otto Wallin. Wilder will face Joseph Parker at the event, but as of late, all anyone can seem to talk about his rumored clash with the former UFC heavyweight champion.

In a recent interview with Lucky Block, Deontay Wilder confirmed that he is open to fighting ‘The Predator’ inside the PFL Smart Cage, but he has a few questions concerning the proposed “mixed rules” matchup.

“I’d have to hear more about these ‘mixed rules’. I wouldn’t mind fighting in the octagon and stuff, but I’d have to understand how the mixed rules are distributed,” Wilder said. “What do they mean ‘mixed rules’? What can and can’t we do?

“But I know for sure – one fight in boxing and then one MMA fight – the rules are what they are. We’ve got rules in boxing, we’ve got rules in mixed martial arts. But when you’re mixing both together now you have to come up with your own rules and it can get kind of frustrating or confusing. But it could be something that’s new and I’m all about change. I’d need to hear it, both parties would need to hear it, and go from there” (h/t DAZN).

Francis Ngannou made his professional boxing debut in October, going toe-to-toe with reigning WBC heavyweight titleholder Tyson Fury in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Going into the contest, Ngannou was given little chance by fight fans to make it out alive, let alone go the distance. However, the Cameroonian shocked the world when, not only did he go a full 12 rounds with perhaps the greatest boxer on the planet, but he even planted ‘The Gypsy King’ on the canvas in the third round.

The performance has since landed Ngannou in the No. 10 spot on the WBC heavyweight rankings and has everyone in the division chomping at the bit to test out the MMA star’s skills in the sweet science.

Though no official announcements have been made, Deontay Wilder appears to be the frontrunner when it comes to Francis Ngannou’s next opponent, whether it be in the cage or the ring.

Off the back of a professional boxing debut back in October, former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou claims “conversations” regarding a potential mixed-rules fight with former WBC heavyweight boxing world champion, Deontay Wilder are most definitely true, amid links to a bout of some form with the Tuscaloosa striker.

Ngannou, a former undisputed heavyweight champion under the banner of the UFC, made a professional boxing debut back in October in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, suffering a contentious and controversial split decision loss to incumbent WBC heavyweight kingpin and common-foe, Tyson Fury.

As for Wilder, the former undisputed WBC titleholder has been sidelined since stopping Finnish heavyweight, Robert Helenius with a thunderous opening round knockout back in October of last year in a headlining clash in Brooklyn.

Slated to return to the squared circle later this month, the Alabama native co-headlines another high-profile card in Saudi Arabia, taking on former world championship challenger, Joseph Parker beneath a headliner featuring both Anthony Joshua, and Otto Wallin.

“I prefer to fight only the top fighters,” Francis Ngannou told The Last Stand podcast. “Why did I fight Tyson Fury? Because he is the top of the game, I wanted to get in there at the top and I want the best. I want the big fights, the big show. I want everything big. At the end of the day, it is a sport, we do what we have to do.”

During a recent interview with Blue Blood Sports TV, Wilder revealed that he’s seriously considering a move to MMA, believing his signature power will be downright deadly in a pair of four-ounce gloves.

The Predator’ made his pro boxing debut last month against Tyson Fury, and delivered a stunning performance against the man many believe to be the best pugilist in the world today. Now, every heavyweight boxer is chomping at the bit to test out their skills against Nagannou.

Following his close split decision loss to ‘The Gypsy King’ in Saudi Arabia, Ngannou revealed that Wilder has been training in MMA for some time, suggesting that the two could face one another in a boxing ring or the PFL Smart Cage.

“That’s something that can potentially happen. Deontay Wilder for a couple of months, or a little while, has been training MMA because there’s an option here. Nothing is set, but some things have been coming to my attention, so that’s something that makes sense,” Ngannou told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour.

“He’s really serious about MMA. A lot of people talk – ‘I’m going to do this in boxing and do that in MMA’ – but Deontay Wilder is very interested in MMA, and even just to step in the (cage) for MMA and MMA only. It’s going to be hard. It’s going to be a different beast for him.”

Of course, Francis Ngannou isn’t the only option out there for Deontay Wilder. After the success of Ngannou vs. Fury, the UFC will likely be open to booking their own crossover clash inside the Octagon.

A crossover clash between Francis Ngannou and former WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder is no longer just a pipe dream.

After Ngannou’s impressive showing against Tyson Fury in Riyadh, opportunities have been practically beating down the former UFC champ’s door. Initially, the plan was for Ngannou to head back to the world of mixed martial arts to make his PFL debut following the matchup with ‘The Gypsy King,’ but that may no longer be the case given his rather shocking performance in the sweet science.

With reports that Ngannou will be ranked by the WBC, there is a world of options out there, but perhaps the most intriguing of them all is a showdown with heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder.

“I think that’s a good idea,” Ngannou said of a potential fight with Wilder during his appearance on Monday’s episode of The MMA Hour. “In fact, we have spoken about that. In fact, that has been in the discussion. So, that’s something that can potentially happen.”

But don’t expect this particular matchup to be any old boxing match. Adding to his comments, Ngannou revealed that Deontay Wilder has been training in mixed martial arts for some time and is very serious about making his MMA debut sooner rather than later.

“Deontay Wilder for a couple of months, for a little while now, has been training MMA because there’s an option here,” Ngannou added. “Nothing is set, but some things have been coming to my ear, to my attention, so that’s something that makes sense.”

Clearly, it’s far too early for any official announcements, but Ngannou plans to decide on what his next move will be by the end of the week. Will it be boxing? MMA? A bit of both? Only time will tell, but some type of scrap with Deontay Wilder certainly appears to be a likely candidate.

“He’s really serious about MMA,” Ngannou continued. “I know a lot of people talk, ‘Oh, I’m going to do this in boxing and do that in MMA,’ but I think Deontay Wilder is very interested in MMA, and even just to step into the Octagon for MMA and MMA only. But, again, it’s going to be hard. It’s going to be a different beast for him. Unlike this time, that I was the one experiencing climbing the mountain, he’s going to be the one climbing the mountain” (h/t MMA Mania).
