MMA fighters are used to living life on the edge, knowing that every time they set foot in the cage they risk getting injured, knocked out or choked unconscious.

However, some of these battle-hardened warriors have gone far beyond that in their personal lives outside of the cage, finding themselves in truly terrifying situations where they have stared death straight in the face and yet somehow lived to tell the tale.

In this article we’ll explore 10 such stories, from near-fatal accidents to deadly altercations, not to mention several alarming incidents where it’s the fighters themselves who have been their own worst enemies.

Court McGee

Before he became an MMA fighter, Court McGee enjoyed drinking alcohol far too much for his own good.

It was a problem that got worse during his college years, but things really started to get out of hand when he broke his collarbone and clavicle in 2003 and then began mixing painkillers with the booze.

Over the next two years McGee would fall deeper into addiction, moving on to snorting crushed up Oxycontin, then cocaine, before finally turning to heroin as life began to completely fall apart.

One September 9th, 2005, McGee’s self-destructive behavior caught up with him and he overdosed on heroin, falling limp to the floor in the bathroom of his cousin’s trailer.

When paramedic’s arrived on scene they frantically tried to resuscitate McGee, whose heart would stop beating for eight minutes in total. It was only when an officer found a syringe that they realized he’d overdosed and were able to take the appropriate steps to bring him back to life.

Afterwards, McGee would spend six days in a coma and then had to undergo extensive rehabilitation to re-learn basic motor skills like walking.

Remarkably, just five months later McGee would relapse, emerging after a four-day binge with no pants on looking for a place to score meth.

That was the final straw and McGee sobered up soon after, got into recovery and found a sense of purpose in mixed martial arts, which would eventually lead to him fighting in the UFC, where he remains to this day.

It looks like Kelvin Gastelum’s recent run-in with USADA is going to cost him much more than it already has.

According to a report from MMA Fighting, Gastelum has agreed to a plea deal with the Brazilian MMA Sports Court (STJDMMA) and will be fined 20 percent of his purse, be suspended for 90 days, and have his original win over Vitor Belfort at March 11’s UFC Fight Night 106 overturned to a no contest after he failed an in-competition drug test for marijuana metabolites.

The potential violation already cost him by far the biggest fight of his career, as he lost a massive fight with legendary former champion Anderson Silva when the drug test failure was announced. It’s the latest in a long history of outside-the-cage failures for Gastelum, who is undoubtedly one of the brightest prospects in a stacked UFC 185-pound division.

But he essentially forced to move back up the class he originally won The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 17 at when he failed to make 170 on several occasions, including before bouts with Tyron Woodley and Donald Cerrone, the latter of which had to be called off prior to last November’s UFC 205.

Gastelum will allegedly face “aggressive sanction” if he fails another test for marijuana and is forced to go in front of the STJDMMA a second time according to Sedlmayer. The other side of the argument, of course, is that marijuana is absolutely not a performance-enhancing drug that should carry even close to the weight of failing a test for any kind of anabolic steroid, diuretic, estrogen blocker, or any truly performance-improving substance.

That’s the age-old debate in MMA, however, and fighters clearly know the rules regardless of how ludicrous the punishment may seen as of right now. Gastelum lost his biggest win and subsequently his biggest fight, and will now be forced to rebuild his name once again.

All for some marijuana.

Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone will finally square off.

The pair were initially scheduled to meet at UFC 205 from New York City’s Madison Square Garden, however, that was subsequently called off. Cowboy instead was booked against Kelvin Gastelum, but Gastelum missed weight and that bout was also scrapped.

Cerrone later took on Matt Brown at UFC 206 on pay-per-view (PPV) and went on to win that back-and-forth contest via vicious round three knockout. It marked his fourth straight victory at 170 pounds, until he ran into Jorge Masvidal one month later and was finished in the second round.

Lawler hasn’t seen Octagon competition since July of last year when he was viciously knocked out by Tyron Woodley in the first round at UFC 201, dropping his welterweight title.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, Lawler and Cerrone will finally lock horns at UFC 213 live on PPV on July 8th:

UFC 213 will go down live on PPV from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 8, 2017. In addition to a welterweight thriller between Cowboy and ‘Ruthless’, the UFC bantamweight title will be defended when champion Cody Garbrandt takes on former friend and teammate TJ Dillashaw.

Both Lawler and Cerrone are looking to resume their winning ways, and no matter which man walks away victorious on July 8th, it will be a huge stamp on the resume for the victor.

Who do you think will take home the win between Lawler and Cerrone? Will the winner be right back in the running for a title opportunity?
