A proven ability to finish fights is undoubtedly one of the most desirable attributes any fighter could ever wish to possess to become a success in mixed martial arts (MMA).

Whether it’s by knockout or submission, fans want to see fights being finished, and so fighters who repeatedly demonstrate that killer instinct in the cage can quickly become valuable assets to a major organization like the UFC, and are more likely to become stars than their counterparts who leave their fate in the hands of the judges.

In this article we’ll seek to establish who the best of all-time are at finishing fights in the UFC, but before we begin, let’s quickly explain the methodology behind our rankings. First up, to provide somewhat of an even playing field we’re only taking into consideration fights that took place in the UFC, since some fighters records are padded out with finishes against low-level competition on the regional circuit.

The most important criteria is simply the number of finishes the fighter has aquired in the Octagon, but if there’s a tie, then we’ll separate them by comparing the number of finishes they have to their overall winning record in the UFC. If there’s still a deadlock, then we’ll move on to establishing who finishes their fights the quickest.

With that in mind, honorable mentions go out to four fan favorites: Randy Couture, Andrei Arlovski, Nate Diaz and Matt Brown, who all have 11 finishes on their records and only narrowly missed out on a spot in the Top 10 based on our criteria.

It was rumored Demian Maia would battle Jorge Masvidal at April 22’s UFC Fight Night 108, but instead the pivotal 170-pound contest will happen on a suddenly packed pay-per-view (PPV) instead.

News broke from MMA Junkie this afternoon (February 28, 2017) that surging No. 3-ranked Maia will face longtime veteran and No. 6-ranked Masvidal on the main card of May 11’s UFC 211 from the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.

The elite match-up will join two title bouts when heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic looks for his second title defense against former champion Junior dos Santos in a rematch of their grueling 2014 brawl, and dominant women’s strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk looks for her fifth in just over two years against dangerous contender Jessica Andrade.

Rounding out the card, former heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum will face Ben Rothwell in a top-level heavyweight bout which will also provide some backup should a main event participant be injured.

On a peerless five-fight win streak, Maia has the look of a championship threat and had previously said he’d wait for the title shot he believed he earned by submitting former interim champion Carlos Condit in the first round of his last fight. However, with a title rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson set for this weekend’s UFC 209 and Georges St-Pierre returning to the 170-pound fray later this year, Maia knows everything is light years away from guaranteed in the crowded UFC 170-pound landscape.

All he can do to further his case is continue dominating the top-ranked opponents they put in front of him.

There really is only one solution…

Earlier this week, fans were teased about a potentially amazing fight. Featuring two of the best grapplers in UFC history, Dana White said he was ‘working on’ Nick Diaz vs. Demian Maia. The UFC president also said that if Diaz didn’t want that fight, he would get working on Maia vs. Jorge Masvidal. After ‘Gamebred’ took care of business against Donald Cerrone in Denver, it appeared that a litany of great fights were available.

“I just reached out to (Diaz’s team) and said what do you guys think about a fight with Demian Maia? I haven’t heard back from them yet,” White said. “If Nick doesn’t take it, I’ll give it to (Jorge) Masvidal.”

Those were White’s words just two days ago, he also indicated that Diaz had already turned down a fight with Robbie Lawler. during an interview with MMAJunkie.com, Masvidal says Diaz has refused the Maia fight, and now Maia has refused to fight Masvidal.

Basically Everyone Is Turning Down Fights

“People are already turning fights down. Demian Maia didn’t want this. They offered him the fight, and he didn’t want it. I guess he wants to sit out. So I want to fight these top-10 dudes. Give me the toughest dudes you’ve got.”

Although a rather obvious and potentially incredible fight would be Diaz vs. Masvidal, its clear that Nick is waiting on one of those really ‘big’ fights. Rest assured though, Masvidal’s social media war with Neil Magny could well yield the fruits of a fight. According to ‘Gamebred,’ he has some beef brewing with Magny behind the scenes:

Masvidal vs. Magny?

“Talking all that (expletive) on social media like he even has $400,000 to put up,” Masvidal said. “You ain’t got no (expletive) money, you bum. I don’t like that dude. You guys have never heard me talk like that before, not even about ‘Cowboy.’ I just don’t like that dude.

“So if (UFC matchmaker) Sean Shelby wanted to see that dude executed, they would green light his ass. Magny might talk (expletive) on social media, but he probably won’t even take the fight. He knows I’ll break his face.”
