It’s now been well over a year since WME-IMG first bought the UFC for a staggering $4 billion, resulting in the Fertitta brothers stepping aside and Hollywood super-agent Ari Emanuel taking the reigns as the head honcho of the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion.

However, Emanuel has been surprisingly aloof since then, with UFC president Dana White remaining the man in charge of the day-to-day running of the company and the main point of contact for the media.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that this means Emanuel is a shrinking violet though, as nothing could be further from the truth.

Like White, he is a bombastic, larger-than-life figure with a fascinating life story, and it’s his strategic vision that White now follows as they attempt to take the promotion, and indeed the sport, to new heights.

With that in mind, it’s high time we delved into Emanuel’s life to find out who he really is, what makes him tick, and what his plans are for the UFC’s future.

He’s The Real-Life Ari Gold

It’s almost impossible to have a conversation about Ari Emanuel without mentioning the fact that he was the inspiration for the unforgettable ‘Ari Gold’ character in the hit TV show, ‘Entourage.’

The story goes that the show’s creator Doug Ellin originally had another big-time Hollywood agent in mind as the inspiration for one of the characters in the show, until coming face-to-face with Emanuel (who was the show’s executive producer Mark Wahlberg’s agent at the time), leading to the realization that this in-your-face, fast-talking, foul-mouthed force of nature was the perfect blueprint for the role.

How like the real Emanuel is the version played by Jeremy Piven on the show though?

It depends on who you speak to, with some of those who know him claiming that it’s right on the money, while an ex-business partner claimed, “he can turn on Ari Gold when he needs to.”

Whatever the case, his association with the memorable TV show character has only been a positive for Emanuel’s career.

“[Emanuel] has made himself a larger-than-life figure in a town where everybody thinks they’re 50 feet tall,” Deadline Hollywood’s Dominic Patten once mused to ABC News.

Gegald Mousasi May be Pulled from UFC 210 due to Trump’s Executive Order

Controversy ensued when President Trump signed an executive order banning travel from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days, effectively suspending admission of refugees into the United States  for 120 days. Political leanings aside, the order could affect the activity of a number of MMA fighters. UFC officials told Las Vegas Review-Journal: “We are aware of the […]

SBG’s John Kavanagh Tells Meryl Streep to ‘F**k Off’

Kavanagh gives Meryl Streep a dressing down, following her unexpected dismissal of MMA at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday.

The highly decorated actress delivered a critique of Donald Trump at the televised awards on Sunday, but has drawn major criticism from the world of Mixed Martial Arts for her attempt to draw a comparison between politics and sport.

The Hollywood legend stated:

“What is [Hollywood] anyway? It’s just a bunch of people from other places. Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. And if we kick them all out you’ll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.”

While Trump himself responded to the comments in a tweet, Dana White was also vocal in his response, in an interview given to TMZ which you can watch here.

Another man who certainly took offence to what has been described as an ignorant assessment of the sport is Conor McGregor’s coach, and SBG wizard, John Kavanagh. In a message posted to his Facebook account on Tuesday, Kavanagh said:

“A lot has been made of Meryl Streep’s ‘calling out’ of Mixed Martial Arts as not being ‘the arts’. She’s 100% right, it’s sport. I was just impressed she said mixed martial arts and not ‘cage fighting’. People probably got a little defensive with the way she was clearly saying ‘the arts’ were so much superior to ‘sport’. What would we ever do without Hollywood!!?” The great American writer Joseph Campbell said the closest he ever came to a truly spiritual experience was through athletics.

Kavanagh added: “I wouldn’t like to think of one activity better than the other – sport or art. Just do whatever you enjoy. I think people’s main issue with her teary well acted speech was that she tried to pass herself, and the rest of her ultra rich and ultra entitled liberal friends, off as ‘an outsider’.

“Yes Meryl, you’re just like an illegal immigrant or starving refugee. Fuck off. Just carry on adding to your 100s of millions you’ve earned from playing pretend. You’ve known nothing but extreme wealth and privilege your whole life, so don’t look down your nose at sport which has probably helped a lot more people than the expensive drama schools you attended. Happy Tuesday haha!” he added.

Donald Cerrone Is Pro-Trump, Open To Fighting At Middleweight

Returning at this weekend’s UFC 205, Donald Cerrone is looking to make another big statement at welterweight. Returning at this weekend’s UFC 205, Donald Cerrone is looking to make another big statement at welterweight. Having fought the majority of his career as a lightweight, the 15-pound increase seems to have improved ‘Cowboy’s’ already high calibre form. Finishes over Alex Oliveira, Patrick Côté and Rick Story have Cerrone in good standing, holding top 10 rankings at both 155 and 170 pounds. Standing in his way at UFC 205 is Ultimate Fighter 17 winner and surging welterweight contender Kelvin Gastelum.

‘Mini Cain’ defeated Johny Hendricks at UFC 200 last time out, and will hope to make a statement about his future title contention with a victory over Cerrone. What we saw from ‘Cowboy’ in his last fight was perhaps his greatest form to date. Dispatching Rick Story with a fluid and beautiful Muay Thai combo, Cerrone showed that welterweight is possibly the best division for him.

Middleweight? Sure

Known for his ‘anywhere, anytime’ attitude for taking fights, Donald Cerrone tells our friends Submission Radio that even a move to middleweight isn’t out of the question. Reacting to Donald Trump’s recent move to the White House, and also the talk of a fighters union, ‘Cowboy’ had some very interesting things to say ahead of UFC 205:

“I don’t give a f*ck, I’ll fight lightweight, welterweight or middleweight. I f*cking love fighting. I’m pro trump, I’m pro union too. Other fighters have been asking me how I can be pro Trump and pro union, like it’s a double negative. I’m like ‘Hey man, I can’t support what I want to support?’ I don’t even know anything about a fighters union, I need to sit down and discuss this. I need to find out what these guys stand for.”

“I’m coming up on 10 years in the UFC, and I have no pension or healthcare. Everyone’s really like ‘Hey great idea, but you do it and we’ll stand behind you.’ I’m happy to stand and be the face of the union. They are worried that they are going to get cut, am I worried? Yes and no, but hopefully I made enough of a name and people want to see me fight. There’s been no backlash, it’s f*cking America man, I can say whatever I want.”
