Former interim UFC lightweight title challenger, Kevin Lee believes that his recent release from the UFC was retaliation from the promotion for their current quarrel with heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou – with both represented by management firm, CAA and agent, Marquel Martin.

Back in November of last year, Kevin Lee, a one-time interim lightweight title challenger, was informed of his immediate release from the organization, with his manager and agent, Marquel, explaining that the Michigan native still retained multiple fights on his contract at the time of it’s termination.

Lee, who was issued a NSAC suspension in July for failure to disclose Adderral use, or seek a therapeutic-use exemption to treat ADHD, had returned to the welterweight limit that month in a unanimous decision defeat to Daniel Rodriguez.

In the time since, Kevin Lee penned a multi-fight deal to compete under the Khabib Nurmagomedov-led Eagle FC banner. And is expected to make his promotional bow in a March 11. main event bout against fellow UFC alum, Diego Sanchez at the light welterweight limit of 165lbs

However, speaking with MMA Junkie ahead of his promotional bow, Kevin Lee maintained that he was not surprised by his release from the UFC, but a piece of him believes his contract termination came as a form of retaliation for heavyweight champion, Ngannou’s current, and longstanding contract dispute with Dana White outfit.

“To say I was surprised – no, not really,” Kevin Lee said. “I know the back end and all the stuff that goes behind closed doors. They (the UFC) really showed me no respect toward the end. I feel like I ate a lot of flak for guys like Francis Ngannou in his situation with them. They used me as kind of a pawn and a scapegoat. And really, I hope other fighters kind of see that. That’s what they do to you.”

“They didn’t like the way negotiations was handled with Francis, so they took it out on me to kind of show (CAA) a lesson, but I think in the end, we’re going to show that you can’t necessarily treat people like this, and there’s many other ways to make money and kind of outshine them,” Kevin Lee said. “So we’re going to beat them one way or the other.”

For Ngannou, the Batie native, who is also represented by CAA and the aforenoted, Martin, completed his contractual obligations of eight fights with the promotion back at UFC 270 last weekend, however, is set to be subject to a ‘champions clause’ in his contract, which would tie him to the UFC for the period of a year, or three further fights – whichever comes first.

Prior and after his successful title unification win over Ciryl Gane last Saturday, Ngannou voiced his displeasure with the lack of freedom found in a contract with the UFC, as he attempts to set up a boxing match against current WBC champion, Tyson Fury.

Michael Bisping Shuts Down Jake Paul vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov Fight Talk

Former UFC middleweight champion, Michael Bisping has rubbished talk of a fight between former lightweight kingpin, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and undefeated professional boxer, Jake Paul – after the latter was offered the opportunity to compete under the Eagle FC banner.

Last weekend, Paul noted his interest in signing with the UFC, with the view of competing at the middleweight limit, suggesting former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor as a potential first opponent.

However, responding to Paul, former lightweight champion, Khabib offered the Ohio native the chance to compete for Eagle FC in the future if he wished, as well as any member of his team.

Replying to Khabib, Paul, seemed to welcome the offer to compete under the organization’s scrutiny – as long as he could fight Khabib first.

Reacting to Paul’s claims, the above mentioned former champion and UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Bisping shot down the idea of a potential fight between the former lightweight champion, Khabib, and Paul.

“For Jake Paul to be going out there and saying he will fight in MMA against Khabib (Nurmagomedov), I mean what the f*ck is that,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “No amount of training from Khabib or anyone is gonna have you beating Khabib, yes, he (Jake Paul) did a little bit of wrestling when he’s at school. Guess what, I haven’t researched Jake Paul’s wrestling credentials. I haven’t looked in so maybe I’m wrong, but I heard he wrestled a bit.”

“At the end of the day, we are talking about fights that will never happen,” Michael Bisping said on Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Jake Paul. “Jake Paul vs. Khabib – never gonna happen. Jake Paul vs. someone like Conor McGregor, probably never gonna happen.”

For Paul, the outspoken Ohio native improved to 5-0 as a professional boxer back in December with a thunderous one-punch knockout win over former undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley in Tampa, Florida.

Chael Sonnen joined Eagle FC as an analyst and will make his broadcast debut with the promotion at Eagle FC 44 this Friday.

Sonnen who had a successful time competing in the cage also found great success out of it following his retirement. Chael Sonnen who is often involved within a similar role at the UFC with ESPN also has provided the same for Bellator whilst creating and delivering content through his own YouTube channel.

The promotion announced the news via their social media and revealed Sonnen would be involved in this weekend’s action, as Tyrone Spong takes on Sergei Kharitonov.

Chael Sonnen Joining Cejudo And Spencer On Broadcast Team

This isn’t the only big-name signing Khabib Nurmagomedov’s promotion has made. Prior to this announcement, the organization had revealed that former two-division champion Henry Cejudo will be joining the commentary team alongside former Invicta FC featherweight champion Felica Spencer. It’s not just the commentary team that has acquired some big names as the promotion has also signed fighters such as Rashad Evans, Ray Borg, and Bigfoot Silva.

The promotion makes its debut this weekend, although they have already secured plans for the second event to take place in March. The main event is set to be led by the new 165lb division which will see former UFC competitors Kevin Lee and Diego Sanchez battle it out.

The card this weekend also sees the return of former UFC competitor Yorgan De Castro taking on Shaun Asher. De Castro started well in the UFC with a first-round finish over Justin Tafa, however, he would then lose three on the bounce before being released by the promotion. De Castro recently revealed that he is happy under Eagle FC and for the first time in his career is focusing on fighting full time.

Kevin Lee Jealous Of Sean O’Malley For Cherry Picking Fights

Kevin Lee parted ways with the UFC following a tough run against high-level competition, which saw him go 1-4 in the promotion since late 2018. However, he wasn’t out of mixed martial arts for very long and has since found his new home under Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC. Kevin Lee will enter in at the newly formed 165lbs division and is rumoured to be making his debut against UFC veteran Diego Sanchez.

“The Motown Phenom” did have success during his time with the UFC enjoying wins over Gregor Gillespie, Edson Barboza and Michael Chiesa.  Lee would have an opportunity at an interim title in a matchup against Tony Ferguson but would all just short this time around.

Kevin Lee Praises O’Malley’s Decision Making

Having had time to reflect since leaving the promotions, speaking with The Schmo Lee states how he would approach things differently, similarly to how Sean O’Malley has been now.

“I’ve got to tip my hat to Sean O’Malley. He knows how to come up. He did it the right way. Honestly, I wish I would have took a couple of pages or two out of his book and had that ability to kind of pick and choose my fights and put on great performances like that. He’s doing it the right way.

“I’m not mad at him for it. I’m a little jealous, I ain’t going to lie. He doesn’t have to fight jiu-jitsu black belts and then in the next fight, fight a world-class striker and then fight a world-champion kickboxer and then fight a wrestler. He doesn’t have to do that. I’m a little jealous. But I tip my hat to him for doing that, though.”(transcribed by mmamania.com)

This method has clearly worked for O’Malley who has amassed a huge following along the way whilst earning himself eight victories inside of the promotion. His only loss coming to Marlon Vera which in turn has created a highly anticipated rematch for the pair in the future.

Kevin Lee, Diego Sanchez

Kevin Lee has his first fight under the Eagle FC banner booked against another former UFC mainstay in Diego Sanchez.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Kevin Lee found himself a new home following his sudden UFC release. He announced that he would be joining Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Eagle FC promotion after a relatively brief free-agency period. At the time, the only additional details revealed was that it was a multi-fight contract and that he would be compensated entirely in bitcoin. There was no word on who his first opponent would be.

Fast-forward to Christmas weekend and multiple sources have now confirmed that Lee will debut in the promotion against the original Ultimate Fighter, Diego Sanchez. Like Lee, Sanchez will also be competing for the first time since his UFC release. This bout will be contested at 165 lbs.

Between the two of them, these competitors are 0-3 in their last three fights. In Lee’s case, he is 1-4 out of his last five, with losses to Al Iaquinta; Rafael dos Anjos; reigning UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira; and most recently, Daniel Rodriguez. Prior to these struggles, Lee once put himself in a position to challenge for the UFC interim lightweight championship and strung together five consecutive UFC victories at one point.

Diego Sanchez made headlines this year for his tumultuous split first from the UFC and then from his mentor and trainer Joshua Fabia. There were talks of Sanchez potentially joining Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, but now we have learned that “The Nightmare” has decided to take his talents to the Eagle FC instead. This news comes after Sanchez’s recent health scare in his battle against COVID-19. He most recently competed in September 2020 in a loss to Jake Matthews.

MMA News will bring you full coverage of this March 11 Eagle FC card as well as any relevant updates in connection to this bout.

Dana White believes Khabib Nurmagomedov will learn what it’s like to promote fights the hard way.

Nurmagomedov’s promotion Eagle FC is set for its North American debut next month on January 28 when names such as Tyrone Spong, Sergei Kharitonov and Rashad Evans all compete in Miami.

Although he doesn’t plan on competing with the UFC, Nurmagomedov is a natural competitor and even poked fun at White in a recent press conference.

So what does White think of his former fighter entering the promoter game?

“I haven’t talked to Khabib about his promotion at all,” White said at the UFC Vegas 45 post-fight press conference last night (via MMA Junkie). “He’s going to find out what it’s like to be on the other side. It’s not as fun as it seems. He’s going to learn. If he doesn’t know, he’s going to know.”

Dana White Open To Advising Nurmagomedov

Of course, if Nurmagomedov does require any assistance or help, White would be more than open to provide a few tips given his decades of experience in the fight game.

That said, the UFC head honcho believes “The Eagle” will learn things the hard way.

“If he calls me and wants advice, I would absolutely give him advice,” White added. “But I think he’s going to learn the hard way.”

Do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov’s promotion will compete with the UFC and Dana White down the line?
