After a dramatic soap opera of twists and turns, tomorrow night’s (Sat., April 7, 2018) UFC 223 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, finally got a new main event when Al Iaquinta vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov was finalized this afternoon after featherweight champion Max Holloway was forced off the event by cutting too much weight.

It came on the heels of Conor McGregor’s New York City bus attack and his subsequent arrest and release on assault charges, marking without a doubt the most insane two days in UFC history.

The event will go on, however, and the fighters will square off at the ceremonial weigh-in streaming live at 6 p.m EST here:

Following an all-out soap opera that was set into motion earlier today when featherweight champion Max Holloway was forced out of his short-notice lightweight title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at tomorrow’s (April 7, 2018) UFC 223 from Brooklyn, New York, “The Eagle” finally has a new opponent for the featured bout.

First, it was former champion Anthony Pettis who was tabbed to replace Holloway, but the UFC reportedly would not agree to “Showtime’s” asking price. Next up was rising contender Paul Felder, who was scheduled to meet Al Iaquinta at the pay-per-view event, but that fight was denied by the NYSAC because Felder was unranked.

The event was running low on viable 155-pound competition after Pettis’ original foe Michael Chiesa was forced off the card due to lacerations suffered in Conor McGregor’s bus attack at Barclays Center yesterday, leaving only Iaquinta, who weighed in at 155.2 pounds – 0.2 of a pound over the championship limit – at early weigh-ins.

But apparently, that wasn’t enough to keep him from stepping into the main as an unlikely challenger.

Word arrived via Ariel Helwani his afternoon (Fri. April 6, 2018) that Iaquinta will face Khabib in the UFC 223 main event tomorrow night, signifying a wholly unexpected rise for the Long Islander:

Iaquinta won’t be able to win the belt, however, as he weighed in at 155.2 pounds earlier in the day, albeit with his underwear on.

Nurmagomedov will be able to win the gold, however:

According to Helwani, Iaquinta definitely would have made the title fight weight, as we only 0.2 over in his underwear and weighed in early, but no one could have seen the necessity unfolding:

UFC 223 finally has a main event, even if it took what can legitimately be called the most hectic week in UFC history.

I guess it’s all part of the fight game, fans. Stay tuned for what will certainly be more big news surrounding UFC 223 tonight.

As the UFC attempts to collect itself following the two most chaotic days in their nearly 25-year existence, some details about Conor McGregor’s first court appearance in New York have arrived.

After McGregor turned himself in last night and was arrested on assault charges (check out the mugshot here) for his chaotic bus attack that ultimately forced three fights off of tomorrow’s UFC 223 at the Barclays Center in New York yesterday, the superstar was set to appear before a judge for his first court date this afternoon.

And he’s not making any enemies in police custody, as Ariel Helwani tweeted that McGregor had been cooperative with the police, many of whom are fans, and was eyed shadowboxing while waiting for his arraignment:

As for that arraignment, Helwani revealed that bail and a future court date would most likely be set for McGregor, yet it was unclear if he’d be able to fly back to Ireland:

So McGregor’s fate is now in the New York legal system, although it appears he’ll be released after paying bail and will have to wait some time to find out his final punishment.

It appears Conor McGregor’s Brooklyn bus attack will, unfortunately, lead to the cancellation of a strong lightweight fight after all.

Updating a previous report that lightweight Michael Chiesa was still fighting Anthony Pettis at UFC 223 after he suffered facial lacerations when lightweight champion Conor McGregor threw a guardrail at a bus containing hated rival Khabib Nurmagomedov, Ariel Helwani just revealed the fight has now been called off due to ‘Maverick’s’ injuries:

The MMA universe was thrown into complete upheaval when McGregor caused the uproar by sneaking into the UFC 223 media day and chasing down ‘The Eagle’s’ bus after Khabib had cornered his friend and training partner Artem Lobov earlier this week.

Yet Nurmagomedov noted that the UFC staff would never have let him off of the bus so close to this Saturday’s card, where he will meet featherweight champion Max Holloway, in his response to the chaos later in the afternoon.

Khabib is being called afraid for not leaving the bus and defending himself against McGregor, and the scenario could eventually lead to one of the biggest fights in UFC history if McGregor does finally face Nurmagomedov, something he reportedly ‘100  f***ing percent’ wants to do.

But while that fight could one day develop, Chiesa and Pettis won’t be able to fight in Brooklyn on Saturday thanks to McGregor’s antics.

Expect some sort of legal recourse to come.

Conor McGregor’s New York City outburst will not prevent Michael Chiesa from doing his job this Saturday night.

During an all-out melee following UFC 223 media day earlier today, the controversial Irish champion threw a guardrail at a fighter bus transporting Khabib Nurmagomedov, who will face last-minute challenger Max Holloway in the main event of this weekend’s UFC 223 from Brooklyn, and he also injured lightweight Michael Chiesa in the crossfire.

Chiesa, who battles former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis on the main card, was reportedly taken to the hospital for facial lacerations and was ’50/50′ to compete at UFC 223 this weekend.

Thankfully, ‘Maverick’ will be able to fight, however, with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani confirming that he left the hospital without any big issue and continued his cut down to 155 pounds:

Khabib has responded to Conor McGregor’s chaotic bus attack in Brooklyn, New York, earlier today.

After McGregor was caught on tape throwing a guardrail at a bus that the undefeated Dagestani was riding, word came that lightweight Michael Chiesa has been injured in the crossfire, before the New York police reportedly issued a warrant for the Irishman’s arrest.

The insane scene unfolded rapidly, with more details emerging that McGregor had come to New York City early to confront Nurmagomedov after he had bullied his longtime training partner Artem Lobov in a hotel earlier this week.

With the buzzing mess creating massive hype, ‘The Eagle’ finally addressed the situation to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, saying he was laughing at McGregor’s antics:

“I am laughing inside,” Nurmagomedov said. “You broke window? Why? Come inside. You know UFC don’t let you come inside. If you real gangster why don’t you come inside?

“This is big history gangster place. Brooklyn. You want to talk to me? Send me location. We have to talk? I am gonna come, no problem.

“I grew up like this. I don’t grow up throwing chairs at window. This is not my bus.”

Khabib clarified that most of his team wasn’t on the bus as Mcgregor threw a guardrail at it, only his manager and members of the red corner on Saturday night:

“This is not my team bus, this is red corner bus,” he said. “My whole team wasn’t with me. It was just me, (my manager) Ali Abdelaziz and a cornerman, Muhammed. The whole red corner was on the bus. Rose Namajunas, Al Iaquinta, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, Ray Borg. Everyone.”

‘The Eagle’ also cleared up that he wasn’t injured in the melee:

“I am good. I feel good. Tomorrow, I am going to make weight. On Saturday, I am going to take belt and change the game.”

Finally, Khabib said he didn’t want Mcgregor to go to jail because he would fight him anywhere if he only sent a location, and wanted to on the bus today. According to the undefeated contender, McGregor knew they wouldn’t let him leave and risk his main event at UFC 223:

“To be honest, I don’t want him to go to jail,” Nurmagomedov said. “We have to fight. If we have to fight, let’s fight. Send me location. Please, we have to fix this. Me and you. One-on-one. You want 10-on-10? OK.

“I give his whole team slap and no one say anything. He come with media, with cameras when I’m alone. Of course I want to go outside but they don’t let me leave the bus. He knows this.

“They don’t do nothing. I’m here.”
