LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Vegas 24: Whittaker vs. Gastelum results throughout the afternoon (Sat. 10th. April 2021) from the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Taking main event honours at the UFC Apex facility event, former middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker meets with the #8 ranked contender, Kelvin Gastelum in a short-notice, rescheduled headlining matchup.

Initially scheduled to headline UFC 234 back in February of 2019, then-middleweight titleholder, Whittaker was forced to remove himself from proceedings on the day of the event, requiring emergency surgery after he suffered a hernia and a twisted and collapsed bowel.

Riding a two-fight winning spree, Whittaker has taken a pair of unanimous decision successes against former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till in July last, and October UFC 254 judging win over Jared Cannonier.

Replacing most recent title challenger, Paulo Costa on a month’s notice, Gastelum enters the tie off the back of a unanimous decision success against Ian Heinisch at UFC 258 back in February — where he snapped his three-fight losing skid.

In the co-main event, renowned puncher, Jeremy Stephens returns to the lightweight limit for the first time since May of 2013, as he tackles Drakkar Klose.

Suffering his second consecutive defeat last May at UFC 249 in Jacksonville, Florida, Stephens dropped a second-round knockout defeat to Calvin Kattar.

Returning to the Octagon for the first time since UFC 248 last March, Klose seen his three-fight winning spree halted by Beneil Dariush, suffering a second-round knockout loss in a heated exchange.

Jake Paul

In the strangest fight of 2021 (so far). YouTube star, Jake Paul, takes on former MMA champion, Ben Askren, on a Triller boxing pay-per-view. Who’ll win? Let’s see who the LowKickMMA are picking.

Jordan Ellis: I’m backing Ben Askren in this one. I understand his striking is poor. I just believe he’s better than Jake Paul who has only beat non-boxers during his pro run. Askren will be able to eat his shots, push the pace and ultimately finish Paul tonight.

Prediction: Ben Askren

Alex Lough: Jake Paul hasn’t fought anybody. I don’t care how he’s looked in his fights, he’s beaten YouTubers and a retired basketball player. His past performances mean nothing. What little I do know about Paul is that he was a college wrestler who started boxing in the past few years. That’s a similar path that Askren has taken, but he started his over a decade ago. While he may not have been known for his striking during his MMA career, he’s still been training with – and fighting against – an infinitely higher level of competition than Paul has, and has done it for a much longer time. Please God, let this be the end of this. Askren by whatever he wants.

Prediction: Ben Askren

Frank Bonada: No idea how Jake Paul vs Ben Askren will play out. Jake kind of looks like he has some hands, but it’s hard to tell with the level of opposition he’s faced. Alternatively, Askren has faced high-level opposition, such as Robbie Lawler, and looked awful on the feet. Jake looks like he hits harder, Askren is likely more durable. Not a clue how it’s gonna go. Ben Askren to win because I like him more than Jake..

Prediction: Ben Askren

Curtis Calhoun: Ben Askren will TKO Jake Paul in Round 6. The pressure that Askren puts on his opponents, dating back to his time in Bellator and ONE Championship, can be best described as annoying and hard to deal with. This is something that Paul probably hasn’t dealt with during routine sparring sessions, nonetheless his last two boxing fights against a retired basketball player and a fellow YouTuber. But let’s be real, despite what we say about Paul, he does have some boxing skills (I use the word “some” very lightly). The difference is, he hasn’t competed against real fighters and faced real adversity in the ring. While Askren’s mantra has always been to survive on the feet, and then to go for takedowns and submissions, he’s not a complete novice when it comes to throwing punches and avoiding damage in the striking game. Look at his fights against Douglas Lima and and Andrey Koreshkov, or his wild fight against Robbie Lawler in the UFC. He can give it and take it on the feet. Even in his loss to Demian Maia he was able to throw some great hooks and show good head movement. The fact of the matter is, Askren is the more experienced fighter (not boxer), and this will show on Saturday night.

Prediction: Ben Askren

Ryan MacCarthy: I gotta go Ben Askren. I just can’t convince myself to pick Jake Paul even though he is a very skilled boxer with natural abilities. I think Ben wears him down, lets Jake swing wildly the first couple rounds and wears him down thru the end. Askren by UD.

Prediction: Ben Askren

Harry O’Connor: Jake Paul isn’t as good as people are making out and that’s a fact! He has good hands but let’s remember that both of his professional fights were against smaller non-fighters. If you watch his fight with Nate Robinson his technique isn’t too great, his footwork is sloppy and his feet come together a lot. If he was a boxer and believed he was a high level boxer he would be fighting boxers not MMA fighters. Do I think Ben Askren is a good boxer? No. I think it will be an extremely boring fight technically and you will see both men have low skills in the ring. A draw on points wouldn’t surprise me as it would add to the entertainment value and possibly a rematch, after all money talks

Prediction: DRAW

The former 185lb king, Robert Whittaker, will take on one-time interim title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum, over five rounds. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think. In the UFC Vegas 24 main event, we have an epic middleweight fight with title implications. The former 185lb king, Robert Whittaker, will take on one-time interim title challenger, Kelvin Gastelum, over five rounds. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think.

Jordan Ellis: A few years ago, when this fight was supposed to happen, I would’ve picked Kelvin Gastelum. I’m a big fan and could see holes in Whitaker’s injury plagued title reign. At this point though it’s impossible for me to back against the Aussie fighter. He’s looked brilliant since losing his belt. Gastelum on the other hand has been poor lately. After three straight losses he managed to get back in the win column but failed to impress. I think Whittaker outpoints him over five rounds.

Prediction: Robert Whittaker

Ryan MacCarthy: I just think Whittaker is the hotter fighter, winner of 2 straight while Kelvin has lost 3 of 4, although he did win his last one which was huge but just has not looked great. Gastelum has shown he can compete with the elite guys. He just got into a little funk. The Jack Hermansson thing was a little weird, he got heel hooked. It has to be a mental thing with him. With Whittaker, the fight is going to be mostly standing. How confident is Gastelum going to be standing again with Whittaker? I think Kelvin is so durable. But I do see Bobby Knuckles winning this one via Unanimous Decision.

Prediction: Robert Whittaker

Frank Bonada: I will always respect Gastelum for giving us that 5 round war against Israel Adesanya. However, there is no way I can pick him in this fight. One of the most impressive additions to his fight against Heinisch was the wrestling heavy approach to the fight. Unfortunately for Gastelum, Robert Whittaker is one of the best anti wrestlers in the UFC. It is unlikely Gastelum will have luck in that department. Then in the striking, Gastelum’s lack of movement and range will likely make him a sitting duck. Partner that with Whittaker’s history of success against southpaws (Hall, Till, Romero etc) and I expect this to be a clear cut fight. The one Gastelum has going for him in this fight is a granite chin and solid endurance. Whittaker via Unanimous decision.

Prediction: Robert Whittaker

Curtis Calhoun: Robert Whittaker by Unanimous Decision. Whittaker has looked incredible since falling to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 and I predict he’ll show no signs of slowing down against the tough Gastelum. Gastelum is one of the dark horses at 185, after giving Adesanya issues in their interim middleweight title bout, but has issues competing in the later rounds. Credit to him for taking the fight on short notice after Paulo Costa pulled out, but this is a mountain that I don’t feel he’ll be able to climb with the reduced preparation. Look for Gastelum to catch Whittaker with some shots early, but for “The Reaper” to control the fight on the feet and on the ground as the fight goes on. On a full camp, I feel this could possibly be a different result…. but Whittaker will win with relative ease and move closer to a rematch with Adesanya for the middleweight belt.

Prediction: Robert Whittaker

Alex Lough: There’s a reason this fight is only coming together as a short notice replacement. Gastelum has struggled when he’s taken that next step against the truly elite. His only win in the last 3 years is against Ian Heinisch, who’s never been ranked. Whitaker has taken on some of the best of the best and come out on top. While he hasn’t looked dominate in his wins over Till and Cannonier, he still proved he can top on some of the divisions best and get the W. There’s levels to this thing, and Whitaker is a step above Gastelum here. Bobby Knuckles by decision.

Prediction: Robert Whittaker
