Matt “Meathead” Mitrione stopped all-time legend Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko in a quick but insane fight that almost ended in a double KO at last night’s (Sat., June 24, 2017) Bellator NYC.

It was Emelianenko’s long-awaited debut in the Bellator cage after a controversial decision win over Fabio Maldonado, and the stage was set for the glorious return of “The Last Emperor” to a major MMA (mixed martial arts) promotion.

However, the 40-year-old looked stiff and slow in front of Mitrione, who, in the past, would not have been much competition for perhaps the greatest heavyweight of all-time. Despite Mitrione only being two years younger than Emelianenko, it is obvious that the Russian’s more than 40 fights are catching up to him.

After his poor performance against Maldonado and tonight’s brutal KO, it is hard to imagine a reality where Emelianenko will serve as a challenge for the top heavyweights in the world, something to be expected given his age and the miles on his tires.

Regardless, the MMA legend is under a multi-fight contract with Bellator that was signed last November, so this will not be the last time he steps into the cage. But the more he insists on fighting, the more tainted his record will become with lackluster performances and savage beatings.

He has an incredible record of 36-5-1, a rarity for a heavyweight, and during the 2000s, he terrorized every fighter on the planet by going on a 28-fight win streak in 7 different promotions.

A man who did not lose from 2000 to 2010 has nothing left to prove in the fight business, and the best course of action for Emelianenko is to retire and not risk any more brain injury. He has the respect and love of mostly everyone who knows his name, and he has countless options for work around the world.

Unfortunately, we all know he is not going to retire. When asked whether he would continue fighting, he said:

“Yes, because I am a fighter.”

For a fighting legend as dominant as he was, retirement may seem like giving up, or tapping out, if you will. But too much pride can be a dangerous thing for a fighter, and there aren’t a lot of reasons to take many more of those heavyweight punches to the head. It would seem the time is right for Fedor to hang up the gloves and focus on himself, not on his less-than-promising future in the sport.

Nevertheless, there might already be a fight on the horizon for “The Last Emperor.”

Chael Sonnen is already campaigning for a fight against Emelianenko after he beat Wanderlei Silva in the main event, calling out “The Last Emperor” despite being a light heavyweight.

Emelianenko expressed no interest in the fight, as they are in different weight classes, but Sonnen said that he would be happy to go up in weight to face him. Perhaps Sonnen thinks it will be an easy win for him, but he should not forget that Emelianenko dropped Mitrione with a straight right, and he could be biting off more than he can chew.

If the aging legend insists on fighting then the bouts will be there, and it is obvious that he can still knock people out. But the fight game is unforgiving, and the lights go out for even the brightest star eventually.

Fedor is a legend, one of the greatest of all-time, and this point, whatever he can accomplish in Bellator will always pale in comparison to the glowing, historic resume he put together during his prime.

Bellator: NYC took place last night (June 24, 2017) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The main event featured a grudge match years in the making, as veterans Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva finally did battle. Sonnen used his trademark wrestling to repeatedly drag Silva to the mat en route to a unanimous decision victory.

The co-main event played host to a heavyweight bout between the legendary Fedor Emelianenko and veteran Matt Mitrione. Mitrione ended up scoring an impressive TKO victory in the very first round.

After their first meeting fell apart due to a case of kidney stones, Fedor Emelianenko made his Bellator debut against UFC veteran Matt Mitrione in the co-headliner of tonight’s (Sat., June 24, 2017) Bellator NYC from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY.

All-time legend Emelianenko was looking to pick up a big win that proved he was still able to contend with top fighters after a highly controversial unanimous win over Fabio Maldonado in his last fight and a prior victory over an inexperienced Jaideep Singh in his first comeback bout.

“Meathead” had won his only two Bellator bouts by knockout coming into the biggest fight of his career against the respected “Last Emperor,” and many felt that his superior hand speed and size would rule over a declining Fedor.

When it was all said and done, what resulted was one of the strangest bouts on a very strange card from MSG. When the dust settled, Mitrione picked up the win by knockout after he dropped Emelianenko just as “The Last Emperor” dropped him, recovering quickly to follow up with an absolutely brutal onslaught of punches. It’s going to anger a dwindling-but-still-present subsect of the Internet, but all-time heavyweight legend Fedor Emelianenko just doesn’t consider himself the greatest of all-time.

That’s what the former Pride FC champion told Ariel Helwani during an appearance on The MMA Hour yesterday heading into his bout with Matt Mitrione in the co-main event of this weekend’s (Sat., June 24, 2017) Bellator 24 from Madison Square Garden in New York, NY:

“I never considered myself to be the best one. A fighter can lose at any moment. And there are some fighters that, for example, are defending on some position that will be better than me in some technique.”

“The Last Emperor” built a glowing resume on the heels of an unprecedented 29-fight unbeaten streak spanning from 2000-20009, with wins over men considered to be the best heavyweights in MMA at the time in former Pride and UFC champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Pride Grand Prix winner Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. So while he called each bout interesting, his two most famous rivalries still stand out in his mind:

“All the fights were interesting for some particular reason, and I could find something in each fight,” he said, “But maybe one fight that I can differentiate, it would be the first fight with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. And the fight with Mirko Cro Cop.”

But while he obviously beat the best in the world during his time as Pride champion, Emelianenko’s legacy took a hit when he denied a chance to continue fighting the world’s best in the UFC when Pride was dissolved, accepting an offer from Scott Coker’s Strikeforce at the time. There, Fedor would suffer consecutive defeats to Fabricio Werdum, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, and Dan Henderson, who, despite being one of the sport’s greats himself, often fought at middleweight throughout his career.

From there Emelianenko went back to his native Russia and continued his trend of not caring about any maintaining level of legitimate world-class competition, beating Jeff Monson, Satoshi Ishii, and a long-past-prime Pedro Rizzo before he retired in June 2012.

He recently came back to the cage, but many hardcore fans his legacy was only further sullied when he faced unknown inexperienced kickboxer Jaideep Singh in his first fight before winning an incredibly controversial decision over UFC light heavyweight castoff Fabio Maldonado last summer, where it appeared Emelianenko was knocked out in the first round.

That’s left Emelianenko’s spot in MMA history as an uncertain and polarizing one, and much of that sits on the fact he and his M-1 Global management team were never able to come to terms with the UFC. He described why those now-infamous talks never offered a positive result, perhaps the main root cause why many are softening on their stance he’s the greatest of all-time :

“We did review the opportunity to fight in the UFC. If the UFC wanted me to get in, we could have,” he said. “We didn’t come to the agreement. “It is very difficult to say, you know,” he said. “It was always something that wouldn’t work out, and it would go back and forth. If, for example, speaking about Scott Coker, we met together and we discussed a lot of issues. We negotiated, we agreed, and he sent me the contract. Everything was exactly [as stated], and the contract was signed. With the UFC always something would [pop up].”

Legendary heavyweight knockout artist Mirko Cro Cop last competed at a Rizin Fighting Federation tournament in Japan last December. Cro Cop ended up winning the tournament and announcing his retirement from mixed martial arts soon thereafter.

The Croatian has announced a retirement multiple times, but he has always returned to action at some point. It seems as if this time may be no different, as Cro Cop recently took to his official Facebook page to call out Fedor Emelianenko for a ‘farewell fight’:

The two have actually met once before, facing off for the Pride heavyweight championship in 2005 in a bout that “The Last Emperor” won via unanimous decision.

While Cro Cop’s future is unclear, Emelianenko is set to take on Matt Mitrione in the co-main event of Bellator NYC, which will be presented live on pay-per-view (PPV) on June 24, 2017 from New York City.

Perhaps Bellator could ink a deal with Cro Cop and set up a rematch between him and Emelianenko in the future.

Is that a bout that interests you?

Former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin recently announced that at 41 years of age he would be coming out of retirement and making his return under the Rizin banner in the promotion’s open weight gran prix tournament. The heavy-handed slugger also said that he was offered a bout against legendary all time heavyweight great Fedor Emelianenko, although “The Last Emperor” recently declined that report via his official Instagram account:

“We were not and are not conducting negotiations for a fight with the company Rizin,” he wrote via Karim Zidan of Bloody Elbow. “Therefore, the information regarding Shane Carwin’s acceptance to meet me in the ring is surprising for me. No proposals from the Japanese promotion arrived to me. In the near future we will announce the date of my fight from official sources.”

Emelianenko fought for Rizin in his return bout on Dec. 31, 2015, scoring a dominant stoppage victory over the rather unknown Jaideep Singh. He most recently scored a highly controversial decision victory over former UFC veteran Fabio Maldonado at EFN 50 last June in Russia. As far as his next fight goes, Emelianenko has been rumored to be in talks with Bellator for a potential fight with former UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione this spring, but the Russian said that nothing has been signed just yet:

“We are now negotiating my next fight, but the contract is not signed with any organization. Before the official announcement, all information about the negotiations are confidential and neither party can not disclose it. As long as I’ve been training as usual, has not yet started to prepare the specific opponent. Today, many people use the lack of information about my next fight for their own purposes.”

Who would you like to see “The Last Emperor” meet next?
