We finally have some footage from inside the arena on UFC Fight Island, where Saturday’s UFC 251 card and three subsequent events will occur on Yas Island in scorching hot Abu Dhabi.

Take a look at this awesome first hand footage from Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting:

As you can see above, Fight Island has a pretty standard set-up, not unlike the one we’ve seen at recent events at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas. This might come as a surprise to some casual fans that have seen the pictures and videos advertising the Octagon outside on the Island itself. If you take a look at the temperatures in Abu Dhabi, during the day, the “feels like” is usually between 120-130 degrees and at night the temps are still in the 100s.

While some fans certainly thought this was the deal, it just doesn’t seem possible to hold these high level fights outside, both a dangerous risk and seemingly unfair to the fighters themselves.

The good news is, reports seem to say that inside the arena itself, it is extremely well air conditioned, which is very good news for all involved, especially the fighters.

This is an awesome setup and seems like a huge win for the UFC and Dana White. We’ll see how the conditions play out on Saturday night.

Jorge Masvidal

UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal is officially set to take on Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 251 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi.

Taking to twitter today ESPN’s Ariel Helwani confirmed the news stating that Masvidal had been cleared to travel to Abu Dhabi after passing a COVID-19 test.

“Jorge Masvidal passed his COVID-19 test. He will be leaving for Abu Dhabi tomorrow. As a result, the UFC has officially announced the Usman vs. Masvidal fight on its social channels.”

The news has been highly anticipated since Gilbert Burns was forced to pull out of the event after testing positive for COVID-19.

This saw Masvidal back in the picture after failed negations for the bout earlier this year. The pair had been lined up to face off following an altercation between the two at the Superbowl back in 2019.

Since then it seemed this was to be Usman’s next title defense until contract negotiations stalled after the UFC and Masvidal were unable to come to terms with money.

The UFC announced the fight on twitter earlier today (6/7/2020).

“OFFICIAL, The BMF steps in on six days notice for #UFC251”

Due to these unprecedented circumstances, it seems an agreement has been reached between the two parties, and now the long-anticipated matchup between the two will come to fruition.

At this stage there has been no information shared regarding Burns getting his shot at the title. Burns earned the opportunity after defeating Tyron Woodley earlier this year.

The match up was to see him face off against his team-mate Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title.

Due to the two sharing a coach, Usman took his camp to a different location under the guidance of head coach Trevor Wittman.

Who do you see taking out the victory in this short notice matchup?

However, following the death of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov on Friday, that will no longer be the case as they have cancelled their departure to Fight Island in Abu Dhabi.

The news was reported by RT Sport’s Dennis Geyko.

“JUST IN: Khabib teammates Umar Numagomedov and Tagir Ulanbekov have both cancelled their departure to #UFCFightIsland following news of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov’s death. Unclear if they will now make their UFC debuts”

It only further highlights just how revered the senior Nurmagomedov was, having been a major figure in the rise of Dagestani mixed martial arts and many fighters hailing from the region.

As for their opponents, Doskalchuk will now face Canadian Malcolm Gordon who proceeded to sign with the UFC soon after.

There is no word if Wood will receive a new opponent as of yet.

The UFC’s upcoming July 25 event on Fight Island has taken multiple hits for undisclosed reasons.

That card will be headlined by a middleweight tilt between former champion Robert Whittaker and Darren Till.

However, two welterweight fights will no longer be taking place on the undercard as Danny Roberts has pulled out of his clash with Nicolas Dalby while Shavkat Rakhmonov will no longer be competing against Ramazan Emeev.

The news was confirmed by MMA Junkie citing two people with knowledge of the situation. As of now, there is no replacement opponent for either Dalby or Emeev.
