Nicolas Dalby

Perpetual dog Nicolas Dalby scored his fourth straight win at UFC Sao Paulo, landing a stunning upset of highly touted Brazilian prospect Gabriel Bonfim.

From the opening bell, Dalby looked to make the bout an all-out brawl, marching forward and immediately putting pressure on Bonfim. After trading some vicious blows on the feet, Bonfim utilized his wrestling skills to get Dalby to the ground and held his opponent on the mat, peppering him with elbow strikes throughout the end of the first five minutes.

Bonfim looked to repeat his first-round success in the second, securing a takedown of Dalby in the early going. However, Dalby managed to fight his way back up. ‘Danish Dynamite’ once again put the pedal to the metal in an attempt to overwhelm Bonfim. The game plan worked as Bonfim began sucking wind and looking noticeably dejected as Dalby poured on the strikes.

Brawling against the fence with less than a minute to go in the round, Dalby appeared to land a knee that sent Bonfim to the canvas. Dalby jumped on his man and delivered a series of unanswered strikes forcing the referee to step in and call for the stoppage.

Official Result: Nicolas Dalby def. Gabriel Bonfim via TKO (knee to ground and pound strikes) at 4:33 of Round 2.

Danny Roberts

British welterweight Danny Roberts has pulled out of his fight with Nicolas Dalby which was scheduled to take place on July 25 – he has been replaced by UFC veteran Jesse Ronson. Roberts took to social media to confirm an injury had forced him out of the bout, he wrote.

“Yes, it’s true. I’m injured and, therefore, will not be fighting at Fight Island on 25 July. I’ve done everything within my control to prepare myself for the fight but the body says no. This decision has not been taken lightly and is one that I’ve never had to make before but it’s one I’ve had to make now. It wouldn’t have been fair to myself or my opponent to leave it any later to make this call. I’ll be back soon, gutted.”

Dalby also took to Instagram to react the news Roberts had fallen out of their fight and been replaced by UFC veteran Jesse Ronson, he wrote.

“That feeling when you find out your opponent for Fight Island is injured. but @UFC has already found a replacement for your #FightIsland fight! The Lokomotivo will now be taking on Jesse Ronson(fought to a split decision with Kevin Lee!) on July 25th. Can’t wait.”

Ronson returns to the UFC after being released by the promotion in 2014. The Canadian lost three straight UFC fights by split decision to Michel Prazeres, Francisco Trinaldo, and Kevin Lee. Ronson picked up a first-round submission win in his last fight in Canadian promotion BTC.

Dalby made his return to the UFC in his home country of Denmark last year when he beat Alex Oliveira by decision. He was originally booked to face Roberts at UFC London in March before the ongoing global pandemic meant that event was scrapped. Dalby will now face Ronson on ‘Fight Island’ later this month.

The UFC’s upcoming July 25 event on Fight Island has taken multiple hits for undisclosed reasons.

That card will be headlined by a middleweight tilt between former champion Robert Whittaker and Darren Till.

However, two welterweight fights will no longer be taking place on the undercard as Danny Roberts has pulled out of his clash with Nicolas Dalby while Shavkat Rakhmonov will no longer be competing against Ramazan Emeev.

The news was confirmed by MMA Junkie citing two people with knowledge of the situation. As of now, there is no replacement opponent for either Dalby or Emeev.

Roberts is coming off a knockout win over Zelim Imadaev in November and was originally set to face Dalby at UFC London in March until the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The fight was rescheduled to take place on July 25 until now.

The undefeated Rakhmonov, meanwhile, will have to wait further to make his promotional debut. He was previously set to face Bartosz Fabinski at UFC London as well until the event was canceled.

All the fighters who were scheduled to compete at UFC London will receive payment despite not fighting due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The event was set to take place at the O2 Arena in London, England on March 21. However, six days out from fight night coronavirus concerns, travel issues and government guidelines meant the card was scrapped.

UFC President Dana White tried to save the event by moving it to America but was ultimately forced to postpone the show in London and his following two events in Columbus and Portland.

Some fighters who were due to compete on the card have taken to social media to confirm they have been or will be paid their show money.

Italian middleweight Marvin Vettori thanked the UFC for taking care of him during these difficult times and said its nice his hard work is recognized by the promotion.

“Thank to the @ufc for taking care of me for the London card situation, I’ve been all in from day 1 in this and it’s good to see that even in hard times like these the work im doing is being recognized. Always ready always working.  Thank you @ufc @danawhite @Mickmaynard2.”

Nicolas Dalby was due to meet Danny Roberts in an early anticipated co-main even match-up. He also took to social media to thank the UFC for paying him despite the fact he hadn’t actually fought.

“As a fighter AND a father & family provider I would like to take a moment to thank @seanshelby, @danawhite and @ufc for stepping up and taking care of us fighters from the cancelled #UFCLondon event! These times are taking a huge hit on all of us, even UFC. So I really commend you for helping us get through this tough period so we can take care of our families and stay ready to fight as soon as possible and once again put on exciting fights for the fans, in the best fight promotion in the world ?????? #Thankful | #GoodKarma | #StaySafe”

Do you think the UFC will pay it’s fighter for other postponed events?

The UFC continue to build excitement for their return to London next year. Native Londoner Danny ‘Hot Chocolate’ Roberts and Danish fighter Nicolas Dalby have been scheduled to meet on the card which takes place in London, England on March 16.

This is a
long-imagined match-up for British MMA fans due to both fighters exploits outside
of the UFC. Roberts and Dalby both built their reputations fighting for Cage
Warriors. In impressive runs they rose to the top and captured the Cage
Warriors belt at 170lbs. They’ll now meet in the big leagues at UFC London.

‘Hot Chocolate’ got back to winning ways last time out against Islam Imadaev at UFC Russia. The 32-year-old scored an epic knockout to save his career in the promotion. Before then 2019 had not been kind to Roberts. He unfortunately became part of Michel Pereira’s highlight reel when they fought back in May. Before that he lost in controversial circumstances during the UFC’s last trip to London. Claudio Silva got the submission win, but it was clear for everyone to see that Roberts didn’t actually tap. He enters the fight with Dalby with an overall record of 17-5 and whilst he is 6-4 inside the UFC octagon.

Dalby’s first stint in the UFC didn’t exactly go to plan. After going 1-1-2 in four fights he was cut. Despite the fact he was never stopped and earned a credible draw with rising star Darren Till. Since then he has battled depression and alcoholism but has still managed to return to the top. Another Cage Warriors stint saw him regain his mojo and pick up an interim belt before he again got the call up. In front of a native crowd he picked up a unanimous decision win over the always tough Alex ‘Cowboy’ Olivera.

The fight will go down on the undercard of UFC London, on March 16 at the O2 Arena. As of yet no main event has been announced, although Darren Till is rumored to meet Jack Hermansson in a clash of middleweight contenders .
