Danil Sharov suffers skull fracture

An unfortunate end to any fight is a fighter experiencing a skull fracture. In his professional debut, Russian kickboxer Danil Sharov suffered a fractured skull when he absorbed a knee from Danil Kirikov at WAKO’s FKR PRO 1 in a lightweight clash.

The knee was landed during a clinch and visibly caused damage to the forehead of Sharov, slightly up and between his eyes. His opponent, Kirikov, was quick to point out the injury to the referee. The fight nearly continued as Danil Sharov was game, and remained in his fight stance. The doctor inspected the visible fracture by putting his thumb in it and the fight was quickly called off.

See below for the video:

It was a lightweight kickboxing fight with both men making their debut. This was an undercard bout in Moscow, Russia on WAKO’s FKR PRO 1.

Reactions to Danil Sharov’s skull fracture

On Twitter, fans were very impressed with the fortitude of Danil Sharov. User ‘Fedor’s Nephew’ commented:

“PS: toughness of this kid is insane. Acted like he got a cut or something.”

Twitter user ‘OkayDFS’ was happy that Kirikov refused to continue knowing his opponent was injured. This user said:

“Yeah another blow would’ve been bad. Opponent knew it too it seemed. I wonder if his skull will heal fully.”

‘Vinny_Napalm’ added that many fighters, Danil Sharov included, are too tough for their own safety. He added:

“Jesus what a great referee. That was hard to notice and that kid is too damn tough for his own good. Would have needed up very bad if it continued.”

Many combat sports fans have also pointed out the similarity of this situation to Michael ‘Venom’ Page fracturing the skull of Evangelista ‘Cyborg’ Santos at Bellator 158. After this gruesome injury, took some time to rest and recover. The Brazilian fighter has not returned to action since this fight in 2016.

In an interview with MMA Junkie, ‘Cyborg’ explained:

“Right after, I was vocal about my wishes to get back to fighting as soon as possible, but it’s better to act with good sense. I took time to think about it, and I want to recover. That’s what I’m doing in Brazil. I’m living with my daughter. I’m teaching fighters here at Chute Boxe in Curitiba, at our professional branch. It’s a great opportunity to share my knowledge with a new generation of fighters, both amateur and professional. Chute Boxe is a true stable of champions, and when one of us stops, we teach what we’ve learned. And that’s what I’m doing now.”

Ahead of his return at ONE on Prime Video 4 tomorrow in Kallang, Singapore, footage has remerged, detailing a stunning knockout loss suffered by decorated Muay Thai striker, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, at the age of 16, against opponent, Sangtiennoi Sor Sornsing back in 2013 just below the strawweight limit at 112lbs.

Rodtang, who has most recently competed under the Chatri Sityodtong-led ONE Championship banner back in May of this year in the ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Grand Prix quarter final bracket, defeated Jacob Smith, which followed prior wins over both Danial Williams, and Tagir Khalilov.

Set to return to competition tomorrow, Rodtang Jitmuangnon, who boasts a mesmerizing 268-42-10 professional record in Muay Thai, is set to face off against Moroccan-born Italian flyweight striker, Joseph Lasiri in a co-main event slot.

The event, which is set to feature at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in southeast Asia, also fields a vacant ONE welterweight title fight between former champion, Kiamrian Abbasov – who lost his title to the scales this morning, as well as Christian Lee. Cosmo Alexandre also makes his combat sports return at the event, while Jonathan Haggerty features on the lead card. Former ONE Championship bantamweight best, Bibiano Fernandes also returns on the promotion’s main card.

Fighting out his UFC contract last month, fan-favorite, Stockton native, Nate Diaz has continued his fighting exploits outside the Octagon – dropping San Francisco 49ers mascot, Sourdough Sam, before grabbing the championship belt and slapping it over his shoulder.

Diaz, who completed his contractual obligations with the UFC last month, headlined UFC 279 against former interim lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson on short-notice, securing his first win since 2019.

Initially scheduled to headline the T-Mobile Arena event against the undefeated, Khamzat Chimaev, Diaz refused to take a catchweight fight with the AllStars MMA staple, after Chimaev missed weight by seven and a half pounds.

Meeting Ferguson on just a days’ notice, Nate Diaz survived an early and midway onslaught from the impressive Ferguson, before he eventually wrapped up a fourth round guillotine choke win off his back after the Oxnard veteran miscued with a takedown attempt.

Yet to pen terms with a new promotion as he flirts with a move to professional boxing, or grappling competition, Diaz continued his striking exploits since his departure, however, taking in a game between the San Francisco 49ers, and the Los Angeles Rams at the Levi’s Stadium.

Nate Diaz shares a laugh with mascot, Sourdough Sam

Sharing a picture opportunity with Sourdough Sam, Diaz then drops the team mascot with a right hand shot, steals his championship belt, before saying, “I’m sorry for hitting you” as the pair embrace.

Linked with a future boxing match against either Jake Paul or former UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, Diaz is sure to have one eye fixed on the duo’s October boxing match in Arizona.

“Jake (Paul) is for sure one of the options,” Nate Diaz said. “He’s doing big stuff, he’s doing really big things and he’s got a big fight ahead of him and if he wins that I think people should surely be really impressed by it. If Anderson (Silva) does his thing to him that’s impressive also so we’ve got a fight on our hands and I’m looking forward to it.”

Returning to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since her third round bludgeoning at the hand of current undisputed strawweight champion, Carla Esparza, and a judging loss to Marina Rodriguez, Chinese contender, Yan Xiaonan manages to outlast Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu maestro, Mackenzie Dern over the course of five rounds — nabbing a close, majority decision (48-47, 48-47, 47-47) victory in the main event of UFC Vegas 61.

Sidelined from the winning circle since dropping a ground strikes knockout loss to Esparza back in May of last year, to go with a split decision defeat against common-foe, Rodriguez back in March, Yan Xiaonan had yet to taste victory since a 2020 win over Claudia Gadelha.

As for Dern, the Jason Parillo product and RVCA trainee had returned to winning ways herself earlier this year with a close judging win over the veteran, Tecia Torres — after she saw her run of four straight wins stopped by Rodriguez.

Testing the grappling and in particular, the wrestling defense of Xiaonan throughout tonight’s 25 minute main event, Dern threatened on numerous occasions with a varied attack including rear-naked chokes, armbars, and event an omoplata, however, prior foundations laid by Xiaonan on the feet guided the Liaoning native to her seventh Octagon triumph.

Turning in one of the fastest submission wins in the history of the UFC bantamweight division, veteran contender, Guido Cannetti knocks back the upcoming, Randy Costa — latching onto a first round rear-naked choke to open UFC Vegas 61 at the UFC Apex facility.

Tasked with opening the organization’s return tonight in ‘Sin City’ — without fans or media in attendance, Cannetti, an Argentine veteran managed to catch Costa coming in off the back of a front kick attempt, dropping the latter to the canvas with a well-placed low kick.

Immediately jumping to Costa’s back, Cannetti, who turns 43 years old at the end of this year, fought the hands and managed to secure hooks on Costa, forcing an eventual tap to land his second straight victory following a prior knockout win against promotional alum, Kris Moutinho.

Conor McGregor

Expected to make his long-awaited Octagon return in the early stages of next year, former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has sent fans and critics alike into raptures, sharing footage of him sparring at Straight Blast Gym HQ in Ireland, across his social media.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, headlined UFC 264 most recently back in July of last year against Dustin Poirier – suffering a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat after fracturing his left tibia and fibula.

Expected to make his Octagon return in 2023, McGregor will be tasked with snapping a two-fight losing run for the first time in his professional career to boot, after dropping a rematch knockout loss to Poirier on ‘Fight Island’ in January of last year.

The Crumlin native’s comeback to active competition has been the subject of speculation too, however, with the recently turned 34-year-old yet to be subject to anti-doping testing by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agancy) since the third quarter of last year.

Conor McGregor teases an impending return to the UFC

Hyping his expected return, McGregor posted two videos of him sparring inside the Octagon at SBG Ireland HQ in Inchicore, Dublin, labelling the facility “the sh*t hot factory”.

“Live from the sh*t hot factory,” Conor McGregor tweeted, accompanied by footage of him landing a jab-straight combination during sparring before reversing a clinch engagement.

In a second video, captioned, “Turning side kick to the face followed by a jumping knee to the breadbasket”, Conor McGregor lands a spinning back kick on his sparring partner, before disengaging and throwing a knee strike to the body.

Without a victory since January 2020, McGregor’s most recent win came in the form of a 40-second high kick and strikes knockout win over the veteran promotional alum, Donald Cerrone at the welterweight limit.
