Conor McGregor is always looking for a way to extend his rivalry with legendary pugilist Manny Pacquaio.

‘PacMan’ surprised fight fights on New Year’s Eve, revealing that a rematch with Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather was in the works for 2024. Pacquiao dropped the bombshell while making an appearance at RIZIN 45 inside the iconic Saitama Super Arena in Japan. The bout has not been officially announced, but if true, it will come nearly a decade removed from their ‘Fight of the Century’ scrap in 2015.

“I will see you here in Japan again, for a big fight,” the former eight-division world champion said before turning around and seemingly asking for permission to announce his opponent “Floyd Mayweather, I thought you wouldn’t want me to say that. I am excited for that. Thank you for always supporting RIZIN promotions” (h/t DailyMail).

Conor McGregor shared the clip on Instagram whilst taking a dig at Pacquiao, writing: “A lesson in how not to make an announcement.

Conor McGregor makes his own blockbuster announcement

Of course, the Irishman offered his own big New Year’s reveal, confirming that he would make his long-awaited return to the Octagon on June 28 to headline UFC 302 as part of the promotion’s annual International Fight Week in Las Vegas. McGregor is expected to square off with former Bellator MMA champion ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler in a 185-pound showdown.

Weeks before the announcement, McGregor vented his frustration over his lengthy layoff, suggesting that if the UFC didn’t lock down a date for his “greatest comeback in combat sports history,” he would pursue a fight with Pacquiao in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

“Get me back in there,” he told talkSPORT. “The Mac has lots to offer and loads to deliver. They are talking Manny here in Saudi. The lads in the UFC aren’t really talking any. So, the lads here are talking Manny, the UFC aren’t talking any. Give me something. I’m supposed to be back in April. It was supposed to be December!

“Tell Manny to grow a set of balls and fight me at a higher weight class. Why not? It’s his sport. If he wants me to come down to a smaller weight, I should be able to use more of my weapons. I should be able to kick. I should be able to grapple. Shouldn’t that be fair? Say it to him. Is he a man or a mouse? Is Manny a man or a mouse?”

Failing in his prior approaches to land a professional boxing rematch with former world champion, Floyd Mayweather following their initial 2017 bout – former UFC champion, Conor McGregor appears to be taking a ‘kill them with kindness’ approach this time around, praising the former’s title defense win over current champion, Canelo Alvarez.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, fought former world champion boxer, Mayweather in a professional boxing debut back in 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sharing a tense buildup over the course of the months ahead of their August clash, McGregor was eventually stopped with a standing tenth round TKO – with Mayweather snatching a 50-0 professional boxing record, and immediately calling time on his professional career following the stoppage victory.

Maintaining in the time since that he would likely beat and even stop Mayweather with strikes if they were to compete against each other again, McGregor, 35, had in his latest attempt to entice the Grand Rapids native to fight him once more, heralded his 2013 decision victory over current world champion and sport star, Canelo Alvarez.

“One of the greatest performances in professional boxing this was,” Conor McGregor posted on his official X account, accompanied by footage of Floyd Mayweather’s fight with Cnaelo Alvarez. “I landed more shots on Floyd than Canelo. I’d love another go.”

Expected to make his own fighting return for the first time since suffering a gruesome leg injury back in 2021, McGregor is pegged to fight Michael Chandler in a UFC comeback next year, at the welterweight limit to boot.

Serving as an opposing coach on The Ultimate Fighter 31 earlier this year against the former Bellator MMA lightweight champion, McGregor had initially planned a December comeback, however, has only returned to the outgoing anti-doping agency, USADA’s testing pool last week – and must first spend a period of six months in the testing pool.

Conor McGregor issues another bizarre call out to Floyd Mayweather Oh Floydddd UFC Boxing

Despite the fact he is currently lined up for an expected return to combat sports inside the Octagon and under the UFC banner, veteran striker, Conor McGregor has called for a presumedly, another crack at undefeated professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather – having first attempted to defeat the Michigan puncher back in 2017.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, most recently featured atop a UFC 264 card in July 2021 in a trilogy rubber match against former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier.

Sidelined since then, McGregor, 35, would ultimately fracture his left tibia and fibula in the opening round against Poirier, leading to a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss.

As for Mayweather, on the other hand, following his 2017 standing TKO win over McGregor in Las Vegas, Nevada, the former multiple time and weight world boxing champion has taken part in numerous exhibition bouts against the likes of Logan Paul, Tenshin Nasukawa, and most recently – John Gotti III, which ended in a mass brawl between both groups.

Conor McGregor now switches focus to Floyd Mayweather

However, permanently chasing a rematch with Mayweather following his stoppage loss to the now-46-year-old in his professional boxing debut, McGregor issued a series of now-deleted posts on his official X account – including a voice memo with him calling out, Mayweather.

“Don’t forget, I played ping pong with Floyd’s (Mayweather) head,” Conor McGregor wrote. “I carried him! In the rematch, I am going to use this style of attack but alongside a more destructive set of shots on top also. B4, it was just ping pong, this time it’s ping pong and Babe Ruth with a baseball bat. KO incoming.”

Making his professional boxing debut and sole outing inside the squared circle against Grand Rapids native, Mayweather back in 2017, suffering a tenth round standing TKO defeat to the former at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather squared of against Gatti, the grandson of former New York mob boss, John Gatti, this past weekend in an exhibition bouts. Mayweather has competed in several exhibition contests in the past few years since his official retirement from professionally boxing. In the sixth round of the scheduled eight, referee Kenny Bayless would stop the fight citing the use of trash-talking and abusive language as the pair goaded and mocked each other.

However, Gotti felt that his work wasn’t done, manoeuvring round Bayless and going at Mayweather, swinging several punches. For his efforts, Gotti would eat a counter right hand which appeared to stun the grandson of former New York mob boss, John Gotti.

Chaos would then erupt, with several members of both entourages jumping in the ring and breaking out into a scuffle. The trouble would continue backstage with attendees brawling backstage, a lot of it was filmed and posted to social media. After the event Gotti would take to Instagram and say –
