UFC Albany went down from the Times Union Center in the capital of the Empire State tonight (Friday, December 9, 2016). The Fight Pass event was headlined by a heavyweight duel between fan-favorite Derrick “The Black Beast” Lewis and streaking Russian Shamil Abdurakhimov.

The main event was a weird one. Lewis’ typical kick-heavy game at range cost him dearly in the first few rounds, as Abdurakhimov routinely caught his kicks and took down the Houston export. A punch to the eye also clearly hampered Lewis throughout the fight, as he continually blinked and rubbed it. But the Russian’s lack of meaningful offense would come back to haunt him. Lewis still had enough left in the tank in the fourth round to go for his own takedown. He moved to mount soon after completing it, and from there he pounded out his foil for his fifth straight victory.

In the heavyweight co-headliner, Francis Ngannou made quick work of Anthony Hamilton. The scarily powerful French prospect quickly escaped an early takedown from Hamilton, and then worked to fend off another against the cage. Ngannou latched on a kimura grip, took Hamilton down, and finished the armlock with seeming ease in the very first round.

Rising heavyweight prospect Francis Ngannou (9-1) had his fourth fight under the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) banner at UFC Fight Night 102 inside the Times Union Center in Albany, New York. His opponent was Anthony Hamilton (15-6).

Ngannou once again finished the fight and has yet to go the distance in victory.

Hamilton went for a kick under a minute into the fight. Ngannou was taken down off a kick, but he rolled off and Hamilton pushed him against the fence. Ngannou held onto the arm of Hamilton and used his strength to take him down and finish the kimura for his fourth career submission win.

Final Result: Francis Ngannou def. Anthony Hamilton via Submission (Kimura) – R1, 1:57

The big men kept the main card action going tonight (July 23, 2016) on UFC on FOX 20. Already 2-0 in the UFC, heavyweight prospect Francis Ngannou met Serbian Octagon newcomer Bojan Mihajlovic.

The two big men stand at a good distance looking for an opening. The Serbian circles around the outside. Ngannou tries to stalk him down. Mihajlovic misses on a low kick and gets back on his bike. The UFC newcomer whiffs on an overhand haymaker as Ngannou misses simultaneously with a right hook. Mihajlovic pushes forward a right hook to the body, but pushes away immediately. Mihajlovic ducks a straight right but is met with a left hook. As he tries to retreat along the fence, he eats another left and trips to his back. The Frenchman pounces with heavy ground and pound. One hammerfist seems to put Mihajlovic out, but a second wakes him up. Mihajlovic covers up under the continuous barrage of heavy ground and pound, failing to move or defend himself in any other way. Referee Herb Dean has seen enough and steps in to wave off the contest, giving Francis Ngannou is third UFC stoppage victory in as many tries. Mihajlovic protests, but this fight is a wrap.

Final Result: Francis Ngannou def. Bojan Mihajlovic by TKO at 1:34 of Round 1.

Not so long ago the UFC’s heavyweight division appeared to be in terminal decline, but recently there have been signs that there’s still some fight left in the land of the giants.

A major issue in the heavyweight division has been the fact that it’s suffering from an aging roster, with the average age of the top 10 contenders and champion coming in at 36 years old combined, significantly older than the UFC’s other divisions.

Many of the same old faces that were around a decade and more ago are still competing today, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, there have also been troubling signs these veterans were finally running out of steam.

However, the good news is that over the past few months, we’ve seen promising signs that some of the divisions biggest stars may have been written off too soon, while a few much-needed fresh faces are slowly beginning to emerge who could help secure the division’s future in the long term.

For those who don’t know, a fighter’s reach is measured by having the fighter spread their arms out to the side, making an “airplane” gesture, and the length from one fingertip to the other calculates their reach. This is also known as their “wingspan”.

Reach is such an important attribute because it allows a skilled striker to control the distance between himself and his opponent, keeping them at bay and within a comfortable striking distance. This provides the fighter with the luxury of being able to strike his opponent while his opponent can’t return fire successfully.

There have been many a rangy fighter in the UFC’s long and storied history, and here we’ll be taking a look at the longest of the long. They may not all be skilled stand-up artists who know how to use their reach to their advantage, but their’s obviously no denying that these men have some impressively long limbs.
