Reigning UFC bantamweight champion Amanda “Lioness” Nunes will likely rematch Valentina Shevchenko, who scored an impressive submission victory over No. 2-ranked Julianna Pena last night at UFC on FOX 23, in her next outing, but she has also expressed interest in moving up in weight in an attempt to win another title.

The inaugural UFC women’s featherweight champion will be determined in the main event of Feb. 11’s UFC 208 from Brooklyn, New York when former 135-pound queen Holly Holm takes on Germaine de Randamie. Nunes has said she would like to take on the winner, but UFC President Dana White doesn’t seem too interested in the idea:

“Pump the brakes,” he said at the post-fight press conference. “Pump the brakes.
“Let’s defend the title first. You know what I mean? Let her defend her title first. She hasn’t defended her title. Everybody wants to jump around these days. We need to start pumping the brakes around here.”

To give credit where it’s due, Nunes has indeed defended her title, as she brutally stopped ex-champion Ronda Rousey in just 48 seconds in the main event of Dec. 30, 2016’s UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

The future of the women’s 145-pound division is also extremely unclear, as Invicta FC featherweight queen Cris Cyborg Justino, the lady who the division was essentially created for, is currently dealing with a potential USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) violation.

White even admitted that he wasn’t the biggest fan of creating the division:

“This whole time, I didn’t want to do it,” said White, referring to the UFC’s newest and third women’s division. “I did it. And now here we are in this position, so we’ll see what happens.”

With that being said, ho would you like to see Nunes face next?

UFC on FOX 23 took place last night (Jan. 28, 2017) from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado and it ended up producing an exciting night of fights.

The main event featured a pivotal bantamweight bout between Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena, while the co-main event played host to a welterweight bout between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Jorge Masvidal.

Earlier this week, I wrote on how I expected this card to hold major implications, and it certainly exceeded expectations.

Let’s take a look at the five biggest takeaways from UFC on FOX 23:

UFC on FOX 23 is set to take place this weekend (Sat., Jan. 28, 2016) live on FOX from thePepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, and although it may be getting overlooked a bit, it could hold major title ramifications.

The card, which is set to be headlined by a women’s bantamweight bout between top-ranked contenders Valentina Shevchenko and Julianna Pena, features a plethora of rising competitors in various divisions and a few exciting bouts.

The stakes will undoubtedly be high this weekend at the Pepsi Center, so without further ado, let’s take a look at six title contenders who could potentially emerge from UFC on FOX 23:

Valentina Shevchenko

After brutally finishing longtime divisional mainstays Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey, Amanda Nunes has staked her claim as the reigning 135-pound queen, and the division is currently wide-open. Because of that, UFC on FOX 23’s main event between No. 1-ranked Shevchenko and No. 2-ranked Pena is a pivotal bout with major title implications.

Shevchenko has actually met Nunes before, dropping a unanimous decision to the current titleholder at UFC 196 last March. Aside from that loss, however, “Bullet” has won two of her last three bouts, with her most recent victory being a highly impressive and one-sided decision over former champion Holly Holm.

The Russian is a decorated Muay Thai kickboxer, holding a 58-2 record. She has a tremendous sense of distance and uses effective movement, which aids her in picking opponents apart. “Bullet’s” submission game is also respectable, as five of her 13 wins have come by way of submission.

If Shevchenko can indeed get by Pena this weekend, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her get the next shot at Nunes.

A pivotal fight in the UFC women’s bantamweight division has been confirmed, as the promotion has officially announced that No. 2-ranked Valentina “Bullet” Shevchenko will face off with with No. 3-ranked Julianna “Venezuelan Vixen” Pena in the main event of a UFC Fight Night card on Jan. 28, 2016 from Denver, Colorado.

Shevchenko has won six of her last seven bouts and is coming off of the most impressive victory of her career, which was a dominant unanimous decision victory over ex-champion Holly Holm last July. “Bullet” is 2-1 inside the Octagon with her only loss under the promotional banner coming against reigning 135-pound champ Amanda Nunes.

Pena, on the other hand, is a former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner and she’s put together quite the impressive resume, as she currently sits at 4-0 in the UFC. Her most recent victories have come over notable names Jessica Eye and former title challenger Cat Zingano.

Pena has been campaigning hard for a title shot and the winner of this bout will likely take on the winner of Dec. 30’s title fight between Nunes and former longtime champion Ronda Rousey.

Tickets for UFC Denver are on sale now.
