Gegard Mousasi go

Gegard Mousasi will attempt to pick up a fourth consecutive victory against the undefeated Austin Vanderford in February.

As originally reported by MMA Junkie, Mousasi is set to defend against Vanderford inside the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. Mousasi is ranked #4 in the Bellator pound-for-pound rankings. Vanderford is the #1-ranked middleweight.

At Bellator 250, Gegard Mousasi became a two-time Bellator middleweight champion when he defeated Douglas Lima to capture the vacant title. Earlier this year, the 57-fight veteran successfully defended his title with a TKO victory over John Salter. The 36-year-old champion has a promotional record of 6-1 after joining the promotion in 2017. Throughout his lengthy MMA career, Mousasi has defeated names such as Chris Weidman, Rory MacDonald, Dan Henderson, and Thiago Santos, to name a few.

Mousasi will be tasked with trying to hand Austin Vanderford the first loss of his professional career. Vanderford may be best known for being the husband of Paige VanZant, but he is making quite the name for himself with his work inside of the cage. 6 of Vanderford’s 11 wins have come under the Bellator umbrella. Most recently, Vanderford defeated veteran Fabian Edwards at Bellator 259.

MMA News will be bringing you full coverage of this Bellator event when that February night arrives. In the meantime, let us hear your predictions! Does Gegard Mousasi pick up a second consecutive title defense, or does Austin Vanderford remain undefeated while picking up championship gold?

Gegard Mousasi made another defence of his middleweight title when he faced off against John Salter in the Bellator 264 main event on Friday evening.

The challenger got off to a pretty decent start in round one. Salter secured a takedown and was able to maintain position, drop some strikes and ultimately see out the round on top.

Mousasi turned things around in round two. The Frenchman was able to land at will during the first few minutes. Salter momentarily escaped from the relentless pressure of Mousasi by once again taking the fight to the mat. Unfortunately for Salter, it wasn’t long until Mousasi escaped and went to work in the clinch before finishing the round with some nasty ground strikes.

The finish came in round three. Salter looked tired and Mousasi was shrugging off his takedown with ease. One particular attempt leaves Salter on his back and vulnerable. Mousasi jumps in with nasty ground and pound that ultimately forces the referee to wave off the fight.

Post-fight, Mousasi squared off with Austin Vanderford who appears to be next in line for a shot at the Bellator middleweight king.

Gegard Mousasi believes Jake Paul will beat Tyron Woodley when they square off on Showtime pay-per-view later this month.

The YouTube star-turned boxer is set for his fourth professional fight when he faces Woodley on August 29. Paul has looked good against extremely low-level opposition in the early stages of his boxing career.

Paul beat fellow internet celebrity AnEsonGib in his debut before spectacularly knocking out former NBA player, Nate Robinson on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. Last time out the 24-year-old emerged victorious against former ONE Championship and Bellator titleholder, Ben Askren.

Woodley represents the first true test of Paul’s career. The former UFC champion has been competing at the top of MMA for years and knocking out elite-level fighters in the process. ‘The Chosen One’ has lost four straight fights and is definitely on the tail end of his career but many believe he will spring the upset on August 29.

Mousasi explained to MMA Fighting why he’s not one of those people.

“To be honest, no,” Mousasi said with a laugh. “You know, Tyron Woodley is 40, he has lost all of his [recent] fights. They chose him because he’s a short guy, he’s not a boxer. I don’t know why people think he can box. Who said Tyron Woodley is a boxer?

“He has one right hand with a small glove,” Mousasi added. “One-hundred percent, it’s not going to go well for him. But it’s going to make money and I wish him well, and I don’t have anything against Tyron Woodley. But let’s be honest, they didn’t choose him because he’s going [win]. Jake Paul chose him because he thinks he’s beatable.”

Do you agree with Gegard Mousasi? Is Tyron Woodley in for a bad night when he makes his boxing debut against Jake Paul on August 29?
