Combat sports streaming service DAZN has reportedly inked a short-term deal with the highest-profile boxing free agent on the market.

Mike Coppinger of Ring Magazine first reported that Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn and DAZN chairman John Skipper met with “GGG” in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The goal of the meeting was to finalize terms of a contract that would be for two fights. Both would earn him six-figure paydays.

Coppinger also stated that “barring an unforeseen stumbling block in talks between GGG and Hearn/DAZN, it appears deal will get done.”

Golovkin is a former unified middleweight champion. He is coming off a narrow majority decision loss to Canelo Alvarez last September. The year before, he suffered a far more controversial split draw to the same opponent. “GGG” did defeat Vanes Martirosyan in May of 2018 via KO in lieu of Canelo’s failed drug test.

DAZN has quickly become the marquee destination for boxing talent. The service boasts the fighting rights to Canelo Alvarez, unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua, undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, and WBC super-flyweight champ Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, just to name a few.

Should Golovkin sign with DAZN a trilogy fight with Canelo would only make sense. However, being that “GGG’s” reported deal essentially equates to a one-year contract, matchmakers better get a move on.

One of the biggest rivalries in boxing at the moment is between middleweights Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin.

At one point, Golovkin was the undefeated king of boxing’s middleweight division. A highly-anticipated fight between Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez was rumored for quite some time. Finally, the pair squared off in a big Las Vegas event in September of 2017. Many believe that Golovkin dominated the fight after 12 rounds of boxing. However, judges turned in a controversial Majority Draw decision.

A year later, the rematch took place from the T-Mobile Arena yet again. This time, the fight was much more competitive. But most fans and experts still had Golovkin winning on their scorecards. Despite this, Alvarez was awarded the Majority Decision victory. The Mexican star, arguably boxing’s biggest attraction at the moment, currently reigns as the WBA, WBC, and lineal middleweight champion.

Not to mention a WBO light middleweight title win over Rocky Fielding this past December. Recently, Golden Boy Promotions’ Oscar De La Hoya spoke to Boxing Scene about a possible trilogy bout between Alvarez and Golovkin. De La Hoya is confident the fight will happen at some point. Not only is he confident the fight will get done, but he’s confident Alvarez will be the first man to knock out Golovkin inside the ring:

“There’s no doubt whatsoever,” De La Hoya said. “Canelo wants to fight the very best, and I can assure you that, third time around, Canelo will knock him out.”

Before that can happen, Alvarez has a date with IBF middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs. The two will unify their middleweight titles on May 4th in Las Vegas. While speaking to the DAZN streaming service, De La Hoya broke down how negotiations for the fight went:

“[It was the] last second, the 11th hour,” said De La Hoya. “I was one night tweeting and said to myself, ‘how am I going to make this happen?’.

“I sent out a tweet that said we were going to talk to GGG and make the third fight happen and Jacobs’ promoter, Matchroom Boxing, called [Golden Boy president] Eric Gomez the next day and said you have a fight with Jacobs.

“My plan worked – now we have one of the best middleweights fights in recent years.”

Oscar De La Hoya claims that the early talks of a potential third fight between WBC-WBA middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are underway. In September 2017, Alvarez and Golovkin fought to a split draw. Moving along to their second fight last September, Alvarez came out victorious by decision.

Alvarez is slated to make his return to the boxing ring on Cinco de Mayo weekend but doesn’t have an opponent lined up. This leads us to De La Hoya, who told ESPN 97.5 Houston that early discussions are underway for a trilogy between the two rivals.

“Last night I had preliminary talks with Golovkin’s people. We threw it out there about fighting for the third time on Cinco de Mayo. Which is the biggest weekend in boxing in Las Vegas,” De La Hoya said (H/T to Bloody Elbow).

Just the next day, the Golden Boy promoter tweeted out that he received his “marching orders” by Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez. These orders were to start talks with Golovkin. He tweeted out the following:

“I’ve given marching orders to my president @makeawar to start talks with @GGGBoxing #CaneloGGG3.”

Potential Issue

The latest update is the fact that Gomez took to his official Twitter account where he wrote the following in Spanish:

“Looks like [Golovkin] does not want Canelo anymore. Prefers easy [fights] as before. We will see friends.”
